Welcome back and we trust you have all enjoyed a
relaxing break and an opportunity to spend some time
with family and friends. Term Two will be another very
busy term, with plenty of things happening across the
school over the coming months.
On our Curriculum Day this Monday teachers undertook
a professional learning program focussing on Deep
Thinking for Deep Learning as part of the New
Pedagogies for Deep Learning global project in which
MWPS has been selected to participate. What is Deep
Learning and why do we want to be involved in this
project? Deep Thinking for Deep Learning focusses on
evaluating, reviewing and refining our teaching and
learning practice to ensure our students build their skills
to become creative problem solvers, who engage in both
the breadth and depth of learning that focuses on both
academic concepts, content and critical thinking skills. In
order for our students to develop strong problem solving
and critical thinking skills, learning needs to take place in
a structured environment where learning is relevant and
purposeful.
At MWPS, we are constantly seeking to improve, evolve
and refine the quality of teaching and learning to ensure
our students achieve, not only the best possible learning
outcomes but also develop the thinking and problem
solving skills needed to succeed in an ever changing and
increasingly complex world. It is essential we continue to
support and empower our teachers to evolve and refine
their knowledge and skills if we are to ensure the best
possible learning opportunities and outcomes for our
students.
We would also like to take this opportunity to extend a
very warm welcome to five new students and their
families. Emma G, Nicola G(Yr2) and Mia G (Yr5) have
made the move from Perth, Shreesh V (Yr4) from
Carnegie PS and Thiru N (Yr5) has moved to Mount
Waverley from India. On behalf of the entire Mount
Waverley community we welcome Emma, Nicola, Mia,
Shreesh and Thiru to our school.
Don’t forget the school photographers,
Advanced Life Photography, will be taking class,
individual and family photos this Friday. It is
important students wear their full school
uniform and attend school on time to ensure
they are present at their scheduled time slot.
Next week our Year 5 students travel to
Beechworth to participate in the school
camping program. We wish them all well and
look forward to hearing and seeing their many
new adventures and experiences on their
return. Special thanks to the coordinating
teachers and parents accompanying the group.
Have a wonderful time!

RUNNING CLUB 2015
We are looking at beginning Running Club again starting on Monday the 20 April. However, to begin again we need
few more volunteer parents to help supervise, otherwise we will be unable to have a Running Club this year. All you
need to do is stand in a position around the school block between 1.35 and 2.30 on a Monday and watch and
encourage all the students running past. If you can help every week, or every second week, or are happy to be an
emergency helper please email [email protected] with details of how you would like to help and
your contact email and phone number . Running Club requires at least 7 committed parents every week .
Running Club is open to all students and has no cost attached, so if you can help it would be great to
be able to run this program again this year.
Merryn Ashcroft
P.E Teacher.

Change The World In Minutes
The Senior Environment Team have undertaken a challenge to CHANGE THE WORLD IN 5 MINUTES. This can easily be
achieved by taking small actions towards making our community a more sustainable place to live in. Next term the
challenge is to recycle as many mobile phones and mobile phone accessories as possible.
We ask that students please bring to school any old phones and accessories for recycling. Students, parents and
friends may bring in these things any time from today. Each class will have a small collection box. During Week 3 the
Senior Environment Team will call for a five minute collection of all mobile phones and
parts for recycling. These will then be collected by Mobile Muster as part of our
commitment to Zoos Victoria to help save endangered gorillas in the wild. For more
information on this program go to

PARENTS AND FRIENDS & COMMUNITY NEWS
Calling all recipes by 30 April!
Time is ticking along quickly and in order to get our Cookbook edited and formatted in time to be published
by Term 4, we really need as many recipes submitted to our cookbook as soon as possible. We have
received a number of delicious recipes already but we really need to get another 150 recipes to make our
cookbook a success!
Don’t worry if you can’t find a recipe that reflects your cultural background. We simply want a diverse range
of recipes in our Cookbook, so just submit a recipe that you know your family loves.
We have now also decided to let families submit more than one recipe, so if you have a couple of recipes
that you can’t choose between, please don’t hesitate to enter them both.
We really need everyone’s support to make this cookbook a success so please help us out by visiting:
www.createacookbook.com.au
Click on the “Submit recipe” tab near the top of the screen. This will take you to a page where you can
select Mount Waverley Primary School in the drop down box. Once you have selected our school simply click
on the ‘click to access recipe form’ tab and follow all the prompts.
Before submitting your recipe - please check out the list of recipes we have already
received. Most recipes submitted so far are sweet based, so if you have a favourite breakfast,
lunch, main meal or side dish then we'd love to have it. You can access the recipe list by
logging into Compass (see the link under ‘MWPS Cookbook’ in the ‘News’ section) or going
onto the MWPS website (go into www.mountwaverleyps.vic.edu.au and click on the ‘MWPS
Cookbook recipes’ link under the Forms section on the left hand side).
Thank you! Kerrie Richards and Narelle Bethune
