On the ropes 100: Celebrating the ANZAC Centenary
On Thursday the 23rd of April, two days before ANZAC Day, twelve Year 6 children went to the Shrine of
Remembrance to take part in the Legacy Ceremony held for students across Victoria. This ceremony was
to commemorate fallen soldiers but not only that it highlighted the role that the legacy foundation in
supporting the families that lost their loved ones for the wellbeing of our country.
Lila and I were fortunate enough to lay a wreath on behalf of our school to show our respect for the
soldiers that made massive sacrifices for our fabulous country .This was an amazing experience and we
recommend that MWPS send representatives to the service every year.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
School Nurse
Earlier this year I wrote in the newsletter that I was
investigating the possible employment of a school nurse.
Following the advertisement a month ago, the process is
now complete and I am delighted to announce that Katrina
Hooke will be joining our team. Katrina officially
commences on July 13, but will be spending some time in
the school this term to get to know everyone and become
familiar with our facilities.
Katrina will be working between the hours of 11.00am –
3.00pm and in addition to attending to first aid for our
students, Katrina will also be responsible for: managing
asthma plans, anaphylaxis plans, preparing first aid kits for
excursions and providing professional learning for staff.
Katrina is a Division 1 Registered Nurse and has recently
completed post graduate study in psychology. Katrina has
been working at the Austin Hospital with acute and subacute patients and prior to that worked at Eastern Health
with similar responsibilities. She has also worked at the
Manningham Day Procedure Centre where the focus of her
work was with triage and administration.
Katrina also volunteers her time with Mustard Live (a non
for profit organisation) where she helps young people with
issues such as bullying, body image and relationships.
We are looking forward to Katrina joining
our Mount Waverley team and I know that
our community will make her feel very
welcome.

GENERAL INFORMATION
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS…
Walk Safely to School Day
Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School
children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. Walking to school
promotes Road Safety, Health, the use of Public Transport and t helps the Environment.
It will be held throughout Australia on Friday 22 May 2015
The objectives of WSTSD are:
 To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour
 To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
 To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
 To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
 To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to
change as children become adults
 To promote the use of Public Transport
 To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
How you can be involved :- On Friday 22 May 2015, we want you and your child/ren to participate in Walk
Safely to School Day. If you drive to school, park 2 blocks away and walk instead of drive. Have fun and
enjoy!!

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT UPDATE
Hi, I’m Earnest and
I care about the
Environment.
Remember Earth

Care for the
environment by

Change The World In 5 Minutes
The Senior Environment Team have undertaken a challenge to CHANGE THE WORLD IN 5 MINUTES. This can easily
be achieved by taking small actions towards making our community a more sustainable place to live in. Last week
the challenge was to recycle as many mobile phones and mobile phone accessories as possible.
So we asked that students please bring to school any old phones and accessories for recycling. The Senior Environment Team will call for a five minute collection of all mobile phones and parts for recycling. We collected 3 kg
which we will add to the 10kg that we have collected over the year. These will then be collected by Mobile Muster
as part of our commitment to Zoos Victoria to help save endangered gorillas in the wild. For more information on
this program go to www.zoo.org.au/callingonyou

WWF(World Wildlife Fund) is inviting Australians to walk, bounce or hop back into the wildlife spirit this
June, with the much-anticipated return of Wild Onesie Week 2015. WWF is challenging Australians to
head off to work and school and go about their day dressed head-to-toe as an animal during WILD ONESIE
WEEK (which includes World Environment Day on June 5). MWPS Senior Environment Team is challenging
our school to participate in this event by holding a WILD ONESIE DAY on FRIDAY 5 TH JUNE. Students are
asked to dress in a wild onesies, or dress like an animal, or wear their favourite pjs on the day. A GOLD
COIN donation is requested. The funds raised will go towards our sponsored animals (which include koalas, a bilby, an orang-utan, a Tasmanian devil and a now critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum.) See
our sponsored animals page on the Sustainability Blog
http://sustainabilityatmwps.global2.vic.edu.au/our-animals/ for more
details of our animals.
