THE CYCLE OF LIBERATION Waking Up Struggle Education Organizing WAKING UP WAKING UP ✤ When someone first encounters the truth about systemic oppression, and their view of the world shifts ✤ Example: a young Latino boy is in line at the grocery store and for the first time hears white people laughing and making fun of his mom’s accent and “broken” English. It is his first experience with racism. ✤ Levels of Liberation: Internalized EDUCATION EDUCATION ✤ When a person educates themselves and their peers about oppression to learn the truth ✤ Example: Youth take an Ethnic Studies class and learn the truth about racism in America, and read books by revolutionary thinkers like Gloria Anzaldua and bell hooks to broaden their understanding. ✤ Levels of Liberation: Internalized, Interpersonal ORGANIZING ORGANIZING ✤ When people get together in groups and come up with strategies to resist oppression or fight for liberation ✤ Example: A few neighbors in the Fruitvale form a community council to figure out how to resist gentrification in their neighborhood. ✤ Levels of Liberation: Internalized, Interpersonal FIGHT!
