Current Role:
Chris joined NCMUK as an Occupational Therapist in March 2015. NCMUK is a national company
which provides brain injury rehabilitation services for clients around the UK. Chris works with clients
and their families in the community following brain injury. He creatively assesses and implements
home based occupational therapy programmes to increase clients’ independence and improve their
quality of life. Chris helps to motivate and encourage people to work towards their own goals in a
variety of self-care, household, community, leisure, education and work related tasks. He
understands the importance of keeping the client central to the goal setting process in order to
maintain their interest and motivation. Therapy programmes are evaluated using outcome measures
and measurable goals. Chris works closely with other professionals to ensure that his clients receive
a co-ordinated approach to their therapy programme and is able to form excellent relationships with
other professionals. Chris also works closely with his clients’ Support Workers by providing regular
clinical supervision to build upon their knowledge and to teach them how to support their clients’
changing needs.
Career Pathway:
Chris began working with those affected by brain injury in 2005 as an Outreach Worker for Headway
Rotherham. Headway is a charity that works to improve life after brain injury. During his time with
Headway, Chris developed a passion for working with people affected by brain injury. His role was
diverse in supporting Headway members to learn about their brain injury, signposting them to
relevant services such as into rehabilitation pathways, supporting them to apply for more adequate
housing, securing appropriate benefits and providing advocacy in appointments with professionals.
Chris’ work with Headway provided him with invaluable experience of working with people in the
community following brain injury whilst also gaining an understanding of the rehabilitation process
and the benefit of working within an interdisciplinary team. Whilst working for Headway, Chris
completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Brain Injury Rehabilitation at Swansea University which
comprised of studying neuro-behavioural models and interventions. Following this Diploma and his
experience of interdisciplinary working with Occupational Therapists, Chris decided to pursue a
career in occupational therapy and subsequently completed an MSc at Sheffield Hallam University in
2012. Chris went on to build key occupational therapy skills whilst working as a Brain Injury
Occupational Therapist with a number of complex clients at JS Parker between 2012 and 2015 prior
to joining NCMUK in early 2015.
