BucksFest15 Brownsea Island Leader Essential Information WEAR water activity gear with clothes on top (including long sleeved top and trousers as there’ll be a sea breeze) swimming costume, t shirt and shorts (non cotton) old socks, sun hat if you wear glasses add a string so they don’t fall off walking shoes/boots BRING in a day sack with decent handles to wear on back (for walk from ferry to campsite) packed lunch 1 litre water bottle (filled up) mug, bowl, spork or fork and spoon packed lunch torch bivvy bag (to be provided by the camp) ground sheet sleeping bag money to buy badges/postcards/neckers complete change of clothes including underwear and socks(don’t bother with pyjamas) carrier bag (for wet clothes) shoes that don’t slip off – old trainers or aqua shoes are perfect (for water activity) cagoule (for water activity) complete set of waterproofs Very basic shower kit – gel, shampoo, towel, toothbrush and paste (share with someone to save space!) personal medication and personal sanitary products DO NOT BRING: sweets, biscuits or any other food – the ANTS, DEER, PEACOCKS and SQUIRRELS will HUNT you out! DO NOT BRING: your bucket – there’s no space on the ferry EMERGENCIES & FIRST AID Bring your own grab first aid kit You are responsible for the basic first aid needs of your group Please ensure that your consent form and grab first aid kit includes: Insect repellent: “Jungle Formula”; Bite and sting relief: “Jungle Formula”; Allergy tablets: Piriteze; Spray on plaster for water activities; Savlon Dry( antiseptic first aid spray) Consents will need to be added to their health forms. There will be a central first aid area if needed (contact any member of Brownsea team for assistance) Everyone must bring a copy of their health and activity consent forms to the Island. In case of emergency DO NOT ring 999. Please contact the duty officer on 07786683226 OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION Everyone (including leaders)will have to walk to campsite (3/4 mile = 30 minutes Guide pace) Personal kit can be taken by minibus if needed Everyone will be allocated a Patrol from BP’s first ever camp Wolves – blue; Bulls – Green; Curlew – yellow; Ravens – red Everybody will do kayaking, raft building, island picture trail and campsite activities in Patrols (there are a range of activities for all levels) Timings of the day will be displayed around the campsite Leaders will have the opportunity to go on the water if they wish There will be a campfire in the evening (feel free to lead a song!) Everyone will sleep under the stars in bivvy bags (including leaders) There is a marquee if weather becomes very inclement in which case there is a marquee for each Patrol There are only SIX of us in the Brownsea team so we will need help from all leaders who come on the island … thank you! SAFETY While you are on the Island your girls are your responsibility! Girls are not to go into the sea unless they are told they may by a leader or instructor. Please make sure that your girls clean out the showers after use. Water bottles must be taken round with the girls during activities, as the risk of dehydration while active and in the sun Appropriate clothing should be worn along with footwear, hats and sun cream. Brownsea Island is open to the public and likely to be busy while we are there. Brownsea island is a national trust site please make sure the girls respect their surroundings (no litter, no wandering from paths, no damaging trees etc.). Please remind girls that they are representing Girlguiding and will be watched by the visiting public. Leaders will need to get their girls to activities on time. We have a small team on Brownsea and they won’t be able to organise girls to this extent. Please wear a watch (You’ll need to tell the girls when to go to activities) If you are bringing a child with no photo permission please make sure we’re aware. (wristbands should indicate this too) Wolves Bulls Curlows Ravens FOOD Complimentary tea/coffee for £1 donation in outdoor centre If you’re bringing a child with a food related allergy please make QM Katie aware of which child it is (there will be no nuts on sight) Lunch: own packed lunch (eat during land activities) Dinner: tomato pasta and cheese followed by cake/fruit breakfast: fruits, cereal bar and juice take away Supper: hot chocolate & biscuits/cake Squash will be available throughout the day (please keep your water bottle full) menu subject to change without notice! There are squirrels/deer/peacocks everywhere who will want to eat stuff DO NOT LEAVE any food unattended Leaders to supervise the queuing and washing up and ensure campsite is kept tidy There will be picnic tables available to use in ‘shifts’
