Paolo e Noemia d’Amico “Atlante” Cabernet Franc, 2011
Region: Umbria Alcohol: 14.5%
Grape Varietal: 100% Cabernet Franc
HISTORY
In 1985, Paolo and Noemia founded a winery based on their mutual life
experiences of elegance and luxury. Paolo’s family has owned a shipping
company for three generations. He fell in love with the winemaking world
as a child walking around the families old wine cellars. Noemia’s Portuguese
family brought their historical wine tradition to Brazil when they immigrated to Rio de Janeiro. Paolo remained in the Shipping Industry sector while
Noemia continued to work at Maison Christian Dior for ten years, they have
always maintained their common passion for the wine making.
VINEYARDS
D’Amico wines are heavily influenced by the ancient volcanic landscape of Vaiano,
from the soil to the cellars, which are made out of the local volcanic Tufo stone.
The vineyards that produce d’Amico’s Atlante are located in Umbria, north of
Rome close to the border of Lazio at an altitude of about 450m. The combination
of the gentle climate of Central Italy with the clayey, limestone-rich soil, makes
this location incredibly unique.
WINE MAKING
The grapes are harvested manually in October and transported in 25kg crates
where they are fermented in stainless steel for 20 days. Aging in new and second
use French oak takes place over 12 months, with another 10 months spent in
bottles. The current wine cellar is divided into two areas: the most ancient, made
out of local “Tufo” stone, with immense arches, where the wine rests in oak barrels to the sound of classical music; and the most recent area, where the wine is
bottled and labeled, surrounded by large columns that act as a library. They are
known to play Pavaratti during the bottling of their wines. The resulting wine is a
treasure from d’Amico – a striking wine that perfectly expresses the otherworldly
beauty of the Calanchi limestone cliffs.
TASTING NOTE S
On the nose, Atlante is generous and complex with a bouquet of fresh fruits,
chocolate, cinnamon and spicy notes. Deep, dark red in the glass, the wine has
a full and harmonious body with deep elaborate tannins and a long, rich finish.
