The Filipino Community of Our Lady of Las Vegas is proud to honor San Lorenzo Ruiz and San
Pedro Calungsod, two canonized saints of the Roman Catholic Church that hail from the
Philippines.
San Lorenzo Ruiz was born in 1600. He was the son of a Chinese father and a
Filipino mother. His father taught him Chinese and his mother taught him
Tagalog. After being educated by Dominican friars for a few years, Ruiz
earned the title of escribano (calligrapher) because of his skillful penmanship.
He married Rosario and together they had two sons and a daughter. In 1636,
while working as a clerk for the Binondo Church, Ruiz was falsely accused of
killing a Spaniard. Ruiz sought asylum on board a ship with three Dominican
priests. They sailed for Okinawa in June 1636. Because of Christian
persecution, Lorenzo Ruiz and his companions were imprisoned and were
subjected to many months of mistreatment and torture. On September 27, 1637, Ruiz and his
companions were taken to the Nishizaka Hill, where they were tortured by being hung upside
down. Refusing to renounce his Christian faith, Lorenzo Ruiz succumbed to his torture and died.
His body was cremated and the ashes were thrown into the sea. San Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized
by Pope John Paul II in Vatican City on October 18, 1987, making him the first canonized Filipino
saint.
San Pedro Calungsod was a Filipino 17th century teenage catechist. A
missionary who worked with the Jesuits, Pedro Calungsod was martyred by
natives in the Mariana Islands on April 2, 1672. This was after an envious
Chinese merchant accused his group, especially his superior Fr Diego Luis de
San Vitores, of poisoning babies through the baptism ritual. The canonization
process for Pedro Calungsod started on June 25, 1998. On March 5, 2000 he
was beatified. On December 19, 2011 a miracle, through his intercession, was
approved as fulfilling the requirement for his canonization. On October 21,
2012, he was canonized as a Saint together with 6 others at St. Peter's Basilica
in Rome by Pope Benedict XVI. San Pedro Calungsod became the second
canonized Filipino saint and is recognized as the model and patron of youth.
We are pleased that we have an active and vibrant Filipino community here in our parish. We are
also pleased that, under the patronage of San Pedro Calungsod, the Alliance of Lay Adults for the
Youth (ALAY) was organized two years ago. ALAY invites everyone to participate in a novena
of Masses in honor of San Pedro Calungsod.
The Novena of masses began on Friday, May 15 and runs through Saturday, May 23. Mass is at
6:30 each day. Mass on Saturday, May 23 will be at 4:30pm. On Sunday, May 17, the Flores de
Mayo Procession (the Flowers of May procession) will take place before Mass beginning at
6:15pm. On Sunday, May 24, a procession will also begin at 6:15pm to conclude the San Pedro
Calungsod novena. After Mass, a potluck reception and program will take place in Bevan Hall.
All are welcome!
San Pedro Calungsod and San Lorenzo Ruiz, pray for us!

Reflection on
Consecrated Life
There’s a story told about a woman who
prayed to the Virgin that one of her sons
would become a priest. She had seven sons, but all of them
married and raised families. Then she prayed that one of her
grandsons would become a priest. She had many grandsons, but
none chose that life. The woman continued her prayer. She was
almost a 100 years old and near death when one of her grandsons,
at the age of 33, decided to become a priest. She died a happy
woman knowing her lifelong prayer was finally answered. The story
is true, told by the priest himself. Prayer works; you just have to
keep at it. — Take five for Faith

God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your
sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely
into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the
Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear
the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before
he ascended into heaven. Those were words of
commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to
the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel
to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means
that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our
everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect,
providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being
good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming
together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are
all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.

Glossary Term of the Week
SACRAMENT - An efficacious sign of grace, instituted by
Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is
dispensed to us through the work of the Holy Spirit (774,
1131). The sacraments (called “mysteries” in the Eastern
Churches) are seven in number: Baptism, Confirmation,
Eucharist, Penance or Reconciliation, Anointing of the
Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony (1210).

STAND AND BE COUNTED
New Members Welcome!
Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the
life of the parish family. To clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,
recognition and responsibilities of many kinds.
Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for Baptism, First Holy Communion,
Confirmation, weddings, school registration, when asked to be a baptism or confirmation sponsor and even funerals.
We will also be able to provide you with a financial statement for your taxes at the end of the year.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptism and Confirmation sponsors. We can only do
this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if
you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So, are you a
registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the
parish office or you may register on our parish website at www.ollvchurch.org.

Faith Formation
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Enrollment 2015-2016
Are you thinking about joining the Catholic Church or learning more about it? Ask
yourself these questions:
•
Where is your journey of faith leading you?
•
Are you interested in knowing more about the Catholic Faith?
•
Do you know someone who might be interested?
If so, come and see what the RCIA process is all about. The Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is
a process for non-Catholics who are interested in (or even just thinking about) joining the Catholic Church.
It’s also a process for those who have not received all of their Catholic Sacraments.
Each year our parish begins this process to welcome any and all who are curious about, interested in, or just
want to know more about the Christian faith as it is lived and celebrated in the Roman Catholic Tradition.
This process is an amicable faith-sharing among friends.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are in need of anointing,
even if you are homebound or hospitalized, contact the parish
office at 802-2300. In an emergency situation when the office is
closed, you will be directed to the emergency extension.
BAPTISMS: Baptisms are usually held on the second and fourth
Saturday of each month.
Parents must be registered, active
parishioners at a parish for at least 3 months. Parents and
Godparents must attend a baptism class (OLLV’s class is usually
the second Thursday of each month). Once these requirements
are met, you may then make an appointment with our
Sacramental Administrator at 802-2300.
HOLY COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND: If you are
homebound or in a hospital and would like to receive holy
communion, please contact the parish office 802-2300.
FOOD & FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Through the
generosity of our parishioners, OLLV is able to help Catholic
Charities of Southern Nevada in providing assistance to needy
families. Please contact Catholic Charities at 385-2662.
FUNERALS: Please call the parish office at 802-2300. If you
have already made arrangements with a funeral director, a staff
member will coordinate with them to meet your needs.
MARRIAGE: At least one party must be a registered active
parishioner of a parish for at least 6 months before an
appointment can be made with our Sacramental Administrator,
802-2300. Please contact the parish office as soon as possible as
at least 6 months is necessary to fulfill the marriage preparation
requirements.
MASS INTENTIONS: Mass intention requests are scheduled
through the parish office during office hours. If a specific date is
desired, please schedule as far in advance as possible.
PARISH REGISTRATION: Regardless of where you live, if
you would like to join our parish, please register at the parish
office. You may also request a parish registration form by calling
the office at 802-2300 during regular business hours, email
[email protected] or go to our on-line registration at
www.ollvchurch.org.
**In order that we may better serve you, please use your parish
envelopes. This way you are known to us when requesting the
services of the church. Please be aware that active registration is
a requirement for many parish programs.
PRAYER LIST: If you know someone who is ill or in need of
special prayers (not deceased), please contact the parish office at
802-2300 or email to [email protected].
Office of Victim’s Assistance - If you believe you
are a victim of sexual abuse, please call the hotline at
