Thoughts From Fr. Tom
Many people spread their cloaks on the road,
and others spread leafy branches that they had cut
from the fields. Those preceding him as well as
those following kept crying out: Hosanna! These
are the words we hear today from the Gospel of
Mark that describe Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We remember this story as we gather on Palm
Sunday and wave our palm branches and begin Mass
with a procession. But this Sunday is also called Passion Sunday because the mood changes quickly as
we hear the Gospel account of the events that led to
Jesus’ condemnation and death. The important thing
is to journey with Jesus and remember the sacrifice
he made for all of us. This will allow us to experience the new life shared with us through his Resurrection. As we begin Holy Week today and prepare
ourselves for the celebration of Easter, may we have
the courage to follow Christ on this journey!
As we enter into Holy Week, we are reminded
that this is the most sacred time of the Church year.
Our liturgies this week are filled with ritual and symbol and help us understand the deep mystery and
meaning of our Catholic Christian faith. This is why
we gather together as a community several times this
week. This is where we need to be in order to share
fully in the joy of Easter. As our Holy Father,
Pope Francis, stated, “during Holy Week we
Christians should gather to meditate on the suffering
of Jesus and recognize this is for me. Even if I was
the only person in the world, Jesus would have done
it. He did it for me.”
So, in gratitude for all Jesus has done for us, we
gather on Holy Thursday for the Mass of the Lord’s
Supper and hear the story of Jesus giving himself to
his disciples at the Last Supper. We also remember
our faith is rooted in service as we imitate Jesus in
the washing of feet. On Good Friday, we gather for
Stations of the Cross at 3:00 p.m. and then again at
7:00 p.m. for the Veneration of the Cross and
Communion. We remember that this instrument of
Christ’s death becomes the means of our salvation.
On Holy Saturday night we gather around the
fire for the great Easter Vigil and hear the stories of
our faith and celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation
with those joining our Catholic faith. These three
days are called the Triduum and are really one
celebration that leads us to the light of Easter
morning. I hope you will take time to be with us this
week. Please take note of the Holy Week and Easter
Sunday schedule included in this bulletin.

OLP’s FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics
Teams Compete in Championship Tourney
The teams recently joined kids worldwide to
redesign how we gather knowledge and skills
in the 21st century. FLL is a robotics program
designed to excite students about science and
technology, as well as teach valuable life skills.
At competition, teams are judged not only
on their project idea and robot, but also on how
well the team implements FLL’s Core Values.
Core Values revolve around a friendly competition spirit, Gracious Professionalism®, knowing that coaches do not have all the answers
(teams learn together), and having FUN!
This year, all three OLP robotics teams
earned the honor of competing against 37 of
the region’s best teams in the FLL Championship Tournament. At the Championship, the 8th grade team captured an award for Core Values:
Inspiration – an award that celebrates a team that is empowered by their FLL experience and
displays extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit.

The Palms blessed on Palm Sunday call to
mind the branches that people put in Jesus’
path as he triumphantly entered Jerusalem
the week before his suffering and death. We
keep them in our homes as reminders of
Jesus, our King. Next year, before Lent, the
dried palms are collected and burned for use
on Ash Wednesday. In parts of Europe where
palms are scarce, people carry flowering
branches from trees or bushes instead.

March 30
March 29
Óscar Arnulfo Romero (August 15, 1917 - March 24, 1980) was a prominent Roman Catholic priest in El Salvador during the 1960s and
1970s becoming Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. After witnessing numerous violations of human rights, he began to speak out on
behalf of the poor and the victims of repression. This led to numerous conflicts, both with the government in El Salvador and within the
Catholic Church. After speaking out against U.S. military support for the government of El Salvador, and calling for soldiers to disobey
orders to fire on innocent civilians, Archbishop Romero was shot dead while celebrating Mass at the small chapel of the cancer hospital
where he lived.
Romero's campaign for human rights in El Salvador won him many national and international admirers as well as a Nobel Peace Prize
nomination. It also won him enemies, however. On March 24, 1980, an assassin fired from the door of the chapel where Romero was celebrating Mass and shot
him dead. The archbishop had foreseen the danger of assassination and had spoken of it often, declaring his willingness to accept martyrdom if his blood might
contribute to the solution of the nation's problems. "As a Christian," he remarked on one such occasion, "I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill
me, I shall rise again in the Salvadoran people."
In 1997, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon Romero the title of Servant of God, and a cause for beatification and canonization was opened for him.
Preparations for his beatification are underway with the ceremony scheduled to be May 23 in San Salvador, El Salvador.
