Tom Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: Hosanna! These are the words we hear today from the Gospel of Mark that describe Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We remember this story as we gather on Palm Sunday and wave our palm branches and begin Mass with a procession. But this Sunday is also called Passion Sunday because the mood changes quickly as we hear the Gospel account of the events that led to Jesus’ condemnation and death. The important thing is to journey with Jesus and remember the sacrifice he made for all of us. This will allow us to experience the new life shared with us through his Resurrection. As we begin Holy Week today and prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter, may we have the courage to follow Christ on this journey! As we enter into Holy Week, we are reminded that this is the most sacred time of the Church year. Our liturgies this week are filled with ritual and symbol and help us understand the deep mystery and meaning of our Catholic Christian faith. This is why we gather together as a community several times this week. This is where we need to be in order to share fully in the joy of Easter. As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, stated, “during Holy Week we Christians should gather to meditate on the suffering of Jesus and recognize this is for me. Even if I was the only person in the world, Jesus would have done it. He did it for me.” So, in gratitude for all Jesus has done for us, we gather on Holy Thursday for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and hear the story of Jesus giving himself to his disciples at the Last Supper. We also remember our faith is rooted in service as we imitate Jesus in the washing of feet. On Good Friday, we gather for Stations of the Cross at 3:00 p.m. and then again at 7:00 p.m. for the Veneration of the Cross and Communion. We remember that this instrument of Christ’s death becomes the means of our salvation. On Holy Saturday night we gather around the fire for the great Easter Vigil and hear the stories of our faith and celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation with those joining our Catholic faith. These three days are called the Triduum and are really one celebration that leads us to the light of Easter morning. I hope you will take time to be with us this week. Please take note of the Holy Week and Easter Sunday schedule included in this bulletin. We keep them in our homes as reminders of Jesus, our King. Next year, before Lent, the dried palms are collected and burned for use on Ash Wednesday. In parts of Europe where palms are scarce, people carry flowering branches from trees or bushes instead. I can only imagine your pain and humiliation as you are exposed to all. Help me take up your garments. Let me put on your cloak. Let me be a model of your life of love and compassion. Pope Francis 2013 Give 25¢ for each time your share a meal at a table with your family this week. Read and reflect on Philippians 2:6-11 What has the Cross left in each one of us? You see, it gives us a treasure that no one else can give: the certainty of the faithful love which God has for us. A love so great that it enters into our sin and forgives it, enters into our suffering and gives us the strength to bear it. Pope Francis 2013 Decorate your home with symbols of Jesus. Pray together as a family before bed or before breakfast. Joy of the Gospel Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length. Yet Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. Read and reflect on Isaiah 50:4-9 April 1 Give the amount you would sacrifice to give others a more abundant life. Lumen Fidei The Eucharist is a precious nourishment for faith: an encounter with Christ truly present in the supreme act of his love, the life-giving gift of himself. Read and reflect 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 April 2 April 5 EASTER SUNDAY Jesus is Risen! Give up some-thing today of great value and donate a portion of it’s value to your Blessing Box. Pope Francis 2013 The Cross of Christ bears the suffering and the sin of mankind, including our own. Read and reflect on Isaiah 49:1-6 March 31 Pray the Stations of the Cross as a family today, and meditate on each one. Pope Francis: 2013 Only in Christ crucified and risen can we find salvation and redemption. He has transformed the Cross form being an instrument of hate, defeat and death to being a sign of love, victory, triumph and life. Read and reflect John 18:1-19:42 April 3 Pray Gracious God, help me reflect quietly on the very real gift that Jesus gave for me. Amen Joy of the Gospel Christ’s resurrection everywhere calls forth seeds of that new world; even if they are cut back, they grow again, for the resurrection is already secretly woven into the fabric of this history, for Jesus did not rise in vain. May we never remain on the sidelines of this march of living hope! Read and reflect Romans 6:3-11 April 4 Through prayer, fasting, learning and giving you have journeyed with our brothers and sisters this Lent. Thank you for participating in our Blessing Box program and reaching out to others in solidarity and in bringing better life to the poor. May the joy of Christ’s resurrection inspire your actions through the year as we continue our journey together in His light and peace. March 30 March 29 Óscar Arnulfo Romero (August 15, 1917 - March 24, 1980) was a prominent Roman Catholic priest in El Salvador during the 1960s and 1970s becoming Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. After witnessing numerous violations of human rights, he began to speak out on behalf of the poor and the victims of repression. This led to numerous conflicts, both with the government in El Salvador and within the Catholic Church. After speaking out against U.S. military support for the government of El Salvador, and calling for soldiers to disobey orders to fire on innocent civilians, Archbishop Romero was shot dead while celebrating Mass at the small chapel of the cancer hospital where he lived. Romero's campaign for human rights in El Salvador won him many national and international admirers as well as a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. It also won him enemies, however. On March 24, 1980, an assassin fired from the door of the chapel where Romero was celebrating Mass and shot him dead. The archbishop had foreseen the danger of assassination and had spoken of it often, declaring his willingness to accept martyrdom if his blood might contribute to the solution of the nation's problems. "As a Christian," he remarked on one such occasion, "I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I shall rise again in the Salvadoran people." In 1997, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon Romero the title of Servant of God, and a cause for beatification and canonization was opened for him. Preparations for his beatification are underway with the ceremony scheduled to be May 23 in San Salvador, El Salvador. Archbishop Oscar Romero By Richard Sinning Lenten Calendar Guide Marc K.
