Our Lady of the Rosary Mission Statement

Pastor’s Corner
Andrew, an explorer who was
crossing a desert, had no more water and
was almost dying of thirst. Suddenly, he
came upon an old water pump sticking
up out of the sand… and, next to it, a
large jar of clear, fresh water. As he
grabbed the jar, he saw a sign: “Do not
drink the jar of water. Use it to prime
the pump. Then leave a full jar for those
coming after you.”
Even though he felt desperate, Andrew
poured the water into the pump, instead
of drinking it himself. Water gushed
out, and he joyfully drank his fill. Then
he filled up his own water containers to
continue his journey… and left a full jar
behind for any caravan coming after him.
I think we all get the point: Living
our lives requires obeying wise advice,
like the note left by a wise person. And,
life requires discipline at moments when
we’d rather “grab and guzzle.” Andrew
desperately wanted to “grab and guzzle”-but he saw the wisdom in holding back.
We live in a culture that praises
and worships individualism. Children
are often fussed over by parents and
grandparents, constantly praised, dressed
in designer garb and never told “No!”. No
wonder teens grow up thinking it is only
their needs that matter. But the over-focus
on “what he or she wants” easily drives
out Jesus’ message to teach children to
live a life of giving and sacrifice, so that
others may not starve. Are you shocked to hear, “The
goal of this process is not individual
development, but how your ripeness
will be harvested and become bread for
others.” May our seeds grow into trees, to
be shade and comfort for others!

Feast of St. Anthony
Noon Mass, Today, Sunday, June 14th, our
Parish celebrates the Feast of St. Anthony
of Padua. The humble and popular Saint,
who knew how to share his deep knowledge
of God with his listeners and through God’s

Background of the Liturgy
We have returned to the season of “Ordinary
Time.” It is the season of the Church. The color
of vestments is green. This is the color of hope:
All things which grow are green! We have completed
our celebration of redemption. We have shared and
renewed ourselves in the Paschal Mystery.
Today might seem like a “let-down” from the
great celebrations of Easter and Pentecost. We
might even give in to discouragement. Today, then,
might serve as a time to renew our courage, our faith,
and our hope that the Lord will always be with us.
The gospel may have been written in a time of
discouragement. The apostles have been sent into all
the world to proclaim good news. But the world did
not instantly embrace the faith.
St. Paul’s epistles reflect many times when
things did not go as he wanted. Sometimes he was
beaten, betrayed, shipwrecked, jailed, and so on. On
some occasions because of miracles, he was even
thought to be a pagan god.
There were constant problems with “Judaizers,”
Jews who thought that Christians were obliged to the
entire Mosaic Law. When Paul wrote the Epistle to
the Philippians, he says that no one came to his aid
while he was in jail — except the Church at Philippi.
Perhaps today’s gospel selection may have
been written in a background of discouragement. In
winter, when nature seems dead, it might also seem
if there will never be spring. But even though we
do not perceive it, plants are still, alive through
the winter. When we plant seeds, they may not
appear to be alive immediately. But eventually they
will bud and blossom.
The Church, as the, plant of Christ, may seem
to be small and insignificant. But it will become a
mighty tree. “Birds of the air” was a metaphor for
Gentiles. When the parable says that the “birds of
the air” will nest in its branches, the meaning may
refer to the ingathering of all “Gentiles” into the
faith. From a small mustard seed a mighty plant
will flourish.
The first reading reflects this theme: From
a clipping from the top of a tree, a mighty plant
can come. The second reading urges us to have
courage. Whether we are “in the body” (alive in the
flesh of this world) or out of it, we simply serve the
Lord to the best of our ability.
We leave to him the success of our efforts.
Whether we seem to have success or not, we serve
and we never become discouraged. The Lord is
with us.
Where Are My Offertory Envelopes?
OSV, who is the printer and mailer of OLR’s
Offertory envelopes, had a slight error with the
June/July envelopes. Some of our parishioners
were sent the correct envelopes, but with the return
address of another parish on the outside envelope.
This confusion has led to some parishioners
discarding their envelopes thinking it was
something else.

A “Basic Catechist Class” will be offered at
Our Lady of the Rosary in the Downstairs Parish
Hall on Thursdays starting June 25th and running
through August 27th from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, and then 3
additional Saturdays, June 27, July 18 and August 8.
This class prepares those who are interested in
teaching catechism classes, but is also open to anyone
who might want a refresher or to learn more deeply
about their faith. Course cost is $75.

accepting applications for retired or semi-retired
women and men. Volunteers for our Jesuitsponsored program have the opportunity to serve
the needs of people who are poor, to work for a

faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian
tradition. Volunteers serve eight or 16 hours a week,

advance and before any other arrangements are made (i.e.

all registered parish students attending public school.
Kindergarten through Confirmation attend on Sundays from

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others.
It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers,
you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or
displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes
offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty.
Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
