We, the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary, are a pilgrim church. Under the
mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we grow as a people of God following Jesus,
celebrating the Eucharist, living apostolic service, continuing faith formation
and Marian devotions. We strive to bring the joy of the gospel and imitate Jesus
through compassion, mercy and love, especially for the poor and marginalized. We seek to be faithful stewards providing a heart and home for all. Our Lady of the Rosary

Pastor’s Corner
The success of the Harry Potter
fantasy books has been called an
“unbelievable
phenomenon”
in
publishing. Over 450 million copies of
the 7 books have been sold. Still, the
Bible has sold from 2.5 to 5 BILLION
copies. Sounds like a lot!
Some churches debate whether
the Potter stories introduce children to
magic and the occult; or do they actually
help children subtly distinguish
between forces of good and evil? Well,
let’s look carefully at how Jesus deals
with demons and diseases caused by
evil forces.
Today, Jesus comes near to Peter’s
mother-in law when he learns of her
illness, takes her by the hand, and lifts
her up. In Harry Potter, evil is usually
attacked at a distance—by pointing a
wand and reciting symbolic words. But
with Jesus, his very touch brings
healing. Why?
There is no evil that Jesus has not
penetrated; he is deeply immersed in
the swirl and storm of life’s good and
evil. He was once described as “A
man of sorrows, and acquainted with
iniquity.” There is an intimacy, nothing
distant about his care and healing. In
fact, he heals those on the margins of
society—women, lepers, those who are
thought to be insane.
But above all, Jesus isn’t channeling
some unknown dark power, such as
Lord Voldemort’s. Jesus is the Son of
God. He has the power of the Creator
of all life filling him, lifting him up even
from death. There’s nothing to fear in
Harry Potter, as long as we remember,
Jesus does not need to point a magic
wand, because he himself IS the conduit
of life: He IS the Way.
Go in peace to love and serve our God!

Background of the Liturgy
Presumably,
professional
people
are usually satisfied in their professions:
We have chosen a particular profession and
have prepared ourselves for it. But as time
goes on, we find that there are difficulties.
Sometimes we are not able to bring a
situation to a satisfactory conclusion. At
other times, our clients just won’t listen
to us. And at still other times, we are
overloaded with situations which seem
to be beyond our abilities. Frankly, we
sometimes are just plain worn out.
As I look at the Scriptures for today’s
Mass, I think that the message to us is:
“Persevere; I am with you.” Whatever our
profession, ultimately we are trying to do
the Lord’s work. We are trying to make life
better and easier for others. But this can
often be a great chore.
In the synoptic gospels, Jesus sends the
apostles out to prepare for his coming.
When they return, he tells them to “come
aside and rest a while.” In today’s Mass
he tells us the same thing. We need days
off. We need retreats. We need vacations.
As far as I know, there is no canonization
for workaholics.
The first reading, from Job, observes:
“Man’s life on earth is a drudgery.” But
it must not be so. We need to work with
zeal. But we must always consider that we
are doing the Lord’s work. He inspires and
leads us; he asks only that we seek to do
the best we can.
In the second reading, Paul observes that
preaching the gospel is an obligation. If he
succeeds, it is because of the grace of God.
He becomes the slave of all in order to
seek the salvation of all. But if he has done
the best he can and still fails — he cannot
afford the luxury of depression or despair.
He must simply entrust his mission to the
Lord’s grace.
In the ruins of Capernaum, the house
which is shown to be the mother-in-law
of Peter is but a stone’s throw from the
synagogue. We can easily imagine Jesus
spending a long time preaching in the
synagogue. When he finishes, he goes to
the home of Peter’s mother-in-law. She is
sick, so Jesus heals her.
After sunset, people bring the sick
to Jesus. He spends the night curing
all. Early next morning, he seeks to go off by
himself to pray. But everyone is already
looking for him. Jesus is probably very
weary. Nevertheless, he begins — again —
to do the work of the Lord.
We know by faith that nothing done for
the Lord or in the Lord’s name is without
honor. Even the trivial things we do for the
Lord are of value when offered in union
with Christ’s cross. Each day we offer all
our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings in
union with him for the glory of the Father.
Therefore we must never get discouraged.
We need to renew our offering frequently,
and then have faith that the Lord will be
with us. We need to take time off. But even
if this is not always possible, we need to
renew our realization that we do all things
for God’s glory.

Please, come to Church Dressed Appropriately!
To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others.
It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers,
you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or
displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes
offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty.
Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
