Baptism Class
The next Baptism class will be Thursday, May
14th at 6:30 PM in the St. Gianna Room of the
Pastoral Center. Parents wishing to have their
child baptized and confirmed adults who have been
asked to be a godparent must attend this program,
which is regularly offered by all the parishes.
Wine Challenge
The Nuova Gen committee is hard at work
planning our next Ferragosto celebration, happening
this Summer on August 15th. There is a golden
opportunity for all of Little Italy to assist them
with the success of this event going on now. They
are looking to us to see who can bring in the most
donated bottles of wine for the night of the big
event. Please bring your donations by the Pastoral
Center during normal business hours! Thank you,
and see you all at Ferragosto 2015, Pompeii!

Liturgy Background
Remember that the Sundays of the Easter
season are devoted to the “Mystagogic
Catechesis.” Those who were received into
the Church at Easter must deepen their faith
and appreciation of the life of the Church during
the Masses of this season.
All is well if this union focuses on the joy of the
resurrection. But the union also means that we must
share the cross of Christ. The cross might be easier
to bear if the suffering comes from outside. But,
sad to say, quite often our suffering comes from
those inside the Church.
When a person becomes Catholic, he/she
expects that everything will be great in the Church.
Frequently, the new convert (the neophyte)
endures much suffering from the choice to become
Catholic. The expectation, then, is that all will be
well in the faith he/she embraces.
The branches of the Christ-vine must be
pruned in order to bear better fruit. The Christian
must experience setbacks and suffering which he
must patiently bear in Christ. Through the cross
he comes to full maturity in Christ. Whether
he realized it or not, Paul was “building up the
Church” in his quiet years at Tarsus — much
in the same way that Jesus saved us even through
his hidden life.
It should be so. But, sadly, that seldom
happens. There are difficulties, problems, trials.
Sometimes these are found in the very faith which
the neophyte has embraced. A possible theme of
today’s Mass is: What happens when things in the
Church don’t measure up to our expectation?
Our first reading tells of the life of. St. Paul.
He had been an intense persecutor of the faith.
By a special miracle on the road to Damascus,
he became a convert. He is filled with zeal for his
new faith, and he suffers much from his former
friends and coreligionists. He expects that all will
be wonderful in his new faith.
At first, it seems so. But many in the Church
were suspicious of this new convert. He might well
be a “mole,” someone sent to spy on Christians
and to prosecute them. Paul is first introduced to the
apostles by Barnabas. But the same group which
stoned Stephen now focus on Paul. The apostles
hustle Paul off to Tarsus where he spends many
years doing little to spread the faith. What a waste
of time and talent! But he was not appreciated,
not thanked, not used to preach his new faith. He
might well have given up because of this reality he
found in the Church.
In the gospel, Jesus uses the metaphor of the
vine and branches to show the union of members of
the Church and himself. The intimate relationship
between Christ and the Christian will later be
expressed by Paul, “I live now, not I, but Christ
lives in me.”
What happens when we don’t get our own
way? What happens when we think our talents are
not recognized? We can rebel. We can quit. We
can think that our faith-journey has been a waste.
We can think that we know better what is for the
good of the Church than any “leaders.” Or we
can humbly accept our lot, and offer ourselves in
union with Christ for the good of the faith.
The second reading resonates with this theme:
We are called to love, not merely in words, but
in deed and in truth. God knows the reality of
every situation. He knows the motives of our hearts.
Regardless of the pain, regardless of the cost, we
are called to faith and to love for all persons.
The cost may be our own crucifixion. It may
be a radical pruning of our pride. Let us pray
for the ability to be fervently faithful even when
things don’t go our way. Christ can save through
us even if our journey is not exactly the road we
might have chosen.
In addition to the models in today’s Mass,
we might think of the lives of the saints. Therese
of Lisieux is patroness of the missions, even
though she never left the cloister of the convent.
Other saints might have chosen brilliant careers,
but were called to work quietly for the Lord. Let us
pray that we may serve the Lord even when he
shows us the way of humility.

Padre Pio Devotions ~ Monday, May 4th
The Padre Pio Group will meet at 6:35 PM in the
Church for Recitation of the Rosary with Mass
at 7:00 PM followed by Prayers & Benediction.
Anyone is welcome to join us in Padre Pio
Devotions on the First Monday of the Month.
Our Lady’s Gifts will be open in the evening for
this event.
Sanctuary Candle Dedication
Remember your departed loved ones or special
intentions by purchasing a sanctuary candle for a
week. The two beautiful candles that hang on the
sides of the tabernacle will be lit in honor of your
request. For $20 a week you may purchase the
candles through the office during normal business
hours.

May: The Month of Mary and Moms
May is the month we celebrate motherhood. Next Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day, but
Catholics traditionally dedicate the month of May to Mary, the perfect mother and model of
our faith. This tradition began in the 13th century as a way of Christianizing pagan festivals.
It was encouraged by Pope Pius XII in his encyclical on the sacred liturgy, by Pope Paul VI
in his encyclical Month of May, and Pope John Paul II called May “a Marian month.”

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others.
It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers,
you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or
displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes
offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty.
Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
