Virtual High School Jump Start Program Application

The Virtual High School Jump Start Program is available only to 12th grade students at Osbourn Park High School for
the 2015-2016 school year. Students accepted into the program will take either English 12 or US/VA Government
through the PWCS Virtual High School Program free of charge during the summer. Students will only be permitted to
enroll in six (6) courses at Osbourn Park High School during the school day. Students must adhere to the following
requirements to be considered for enrollment in the program.
Students participating in the Virtual High School Jump Start Program will be required to do the following:

Attend a Virtual High School course orientation, which will be offered in person on the first day of the session
at OPHS. There is also a required Program Orientation and readiness assessment to be completed ONLINE
sometime during the 5 days prior to the session start date.
Log into and complete work on the Virtual High School course daily and should expect to spend approximately
4-6 hours per day. Work can be completed any time of the day and from any location with internet access.
Students will communicate with their virtual teacher during the teacher’s evening daily office hours and live
lessons. Additional support may be obtained as needed during your lunch period or another time when you are
permitted to be in the building.
Student must have a computer with internet access available daily. Midterm and final exams are in-person on
the scheduled dates at OPHS.
If you choose to take an additional course in the VHS program, be prepared to double your daily time
commitment and attend two separate exam administrations in different locations. See the Session Schedule on
the VHS website for specific dates and locations. Tuition will apply for any additional course(s).
Students must also understand the following about participation in this program:

Students who participate may only take 6 courses during the school day at Osbourn Park High School.
Counselors will work with students on setting their early release period in their schedule. Students will not be
permitted to stay in the building during these “off periods.”
Students may not drop the Virtual High School course to enter an English 12 or US/VA Government regular
education course at Osbourn Park High School during the 2015-2016 school year.
If a student fails either the US/VA Government or English 12 course on the first attempt, he/she must retake
the course in summer, night or virtual high school at the student’s expense.
Students must remain “in good standing” during the time in which they are enrolled in the Virtual High School
Jump Start program. If a student is suspended, expelled or any disciplinary consequences a student may
experience would apply, and the student will be exited from the program.
Students will take English 12 or US/VA Government from June 29, 2015 – August 7, 2015. The courses will
be offered during the summer. Thus, students enrolled in this program will only be taking six classes during
the school year. Student athletes should ensure that they are receiving passing grades in their courses at all
times to remain eligible to participate in Virginia High School League (VHSL) events and activities.
Students must meet all the requirements of the PWCS Virtual High School program.
Students must complete either English 12 or US/VA Government prior to the June graduation date in order to
participate in graduation ceremonies.

Once approved, students must go to the Virtual High School website at http://virtualhigh.schools.pwcs.edu click on the
registration link, and choose the Jump Start course that you would like to take (English 12 or US/VA Government).
The counselor will attach the following: Attendance Summary, Current report card or transcript
