APRIL 26, 2015 • FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
From the Pastor’s Desk
“A.D.”, Sunday Nights, NBC-TV, 8:00 pm
This twelve week mini-series explores the exciting and inspiring events that followed after the Crucifixion of Jesus. Watch
as the Christian disciples struggle to survive and share their beliefs.

EPISODE 4: “Signs and Wonders: (Air date: Sunday, April 26, 8:00 p.m., NBC-TV)
Episode Summary: Peter and John are released from prison after their trial. Christians
are now beyond counting, and among the new converts is Stephen, a bold young man who is eager to
preach. Key characters in this episode: Barnabas, Ananias, Sapphira, John, Peter, Stephen, and Pontius
Pilate. Scriptural background: Chapters 4-5 of the Acts of the Apostles.
Discussion questions: How do you think Peter felt about getting thrown into prison? Wasn’t this the
very thing he was trying to avoid when he denied three times that he knew Jesus? What was different
now? Why do you think the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a breath of wind? What is the difference
between Jesus’ miraculous healings of people and Peter’s healing of the lame man?
You’re Invited to the Deacon Ordination of Matthew Northenscold, Saturday, May 2, 10:00 am at the Basilica of St. Mary, 88 N.
17th Street in downtown Minneapolis. Matthew is our teaching parish seminarian. He will be ordained a transitional deacon on May 2 and
then, one year from now, he will be ordained to the priesthood in May 2016.

Queen of May News
Tickets are selling really well for our Queen of May dinner
and Auction! This year, we are trying something new and
different to improve bidding and the check-out procedures.
We have hired a company called Auctions By Cellular
(ABC) to ensure we have a successful check-out! Here are
some details:
 The Silent Auction bidding will be done via texting
on your cell phone. Perhaps you do not have a cell
phone or you do not text on your cell phone? This
is not a problem, as the company we are working
with (ABC) will have Personal Shoppers in red
shirts roaming through the Silent Auction area to
assist you.
 The Live Auction and Fund-A-Need will continue
with the bid number paddles that we are accustomed to using.
 At the end of the evening, the ABC reps will guide
you through the check-out line. You may pay by
check, cash or credit card.
 A way to ensure the process goes even more
smoothly for each of us is to register your cell
phone number with the company ahead of time.
The cell phone number you register is the one you
should have with you at the Queen of May. At the
time of this bulletin submission, I do not yet have
those directions. Please watch for more details in
next week’s bulletin.
As always, thanks for your support of the school! We are
so blessed.

We have collected $3,043.00. Very soon we will be setting the
schedule for the actual event that will take place at St. Anthony
High School on Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24. At
that time, Christian congregations from Minneapolis, New Brighton, St. Anthony, and Columbia Heights will be working together
to pack 100,000 meals in two days. The meals will be paid for
with the money collected through our collective fund raising effort, $22,000.00 in all. They are tentatively planning four packing
sessions (two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday) with about 150
volunteers per session, from the various churches. There will also
be a set-up session on Tuesday and a clean-up session Wednesday, with a need for about 15-20 volunteers each. Watch for details. Thanks again!

become so overwhelmed by His abundant love for us that we

Reflection
Fourth Sunday of Easter
“And I will lay down my life for the sheep.” Jesus himself gave
us the image of himself as the Good Shepherd. In trying to teach
us about who he was, his love for us, and his mission to save us,
he chose to speak in these terms. The picture is a comforting one.
We can imagine the natural beauty of a shepherd on a hillside,
gently leading and guiding his sheep to the places where all their
needs are met. The shepherd makes sure they are fed, watered,
rested, and, of course, safe. This last element is what separates a
good shepherd from a bad one. When a threat approaches his
flock, the good shepherd will do whatever is necessary to save
them, even at risk of his own safety. The bad shepherd, on the
other hand, thinks only of himself and abandons the sheep in order to protect his own skin.
It’s important, in understanding the analogy, for us to realize that
we, the sheep of Christ’s pasture, do face real threats, though they
may be the kind that are hard to recognize. The wolves that prowl
around our souls are the vices of anger, jealousy, lust, greed, gluttony, vanity, and laziness. We traditionally call these the seven
deadly sins, and they are truly deadly. When we give in to them,
we cut off our souls from the source of real life: God. But Jesus is
the Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for us, literally. Jesus
suffered and died on the cross, taking away the deadly consequence of sin. This selfless act has saved us by offering the forgiveness and reconciliation that our souls, weak and weary from
the attacks of evil, desperately need. What a gift to be in the care
of such a shepherd. What a joy to be in this flock where, as Jesus
says, “I know mine and mine know me.”

Word of Life
“[T]he pro-life position is often misunderstood
as neither showing compassion to mothers nor
caring about the children after they are born.
This is unfortunate. … Those who see a lack of
compassion from pro-lifers may not be aware of
the many resources and compassionate care
available to women facing unplanned pregnancies. … [Crisis pregnancy] centers exist to provide warm and
caring environments for mothers and families who find themselves with an unexpected pregnancy.”
