About the course
Tailored to students aged between 13 and 18 and of Grade 5-8 standard, our summer course
will begin after lunch on Saturday 29 August and will culminate with an end of course
performance for parents on Monday 31 August showcasing the weekend’s work.
The fabulous Katherine Baker, principal flute in the Hallé orchestra, will be holding a
masterclass on the Sunday and performing for course attendees early that evening. We are also
delighted that Matt Smith, composer and flautist will be joining us for the weekend.
In addition there will be
• advice on composing with the flute for GCSE and A Level,
• tackling performance anxiety with Alexander Technique teacher Patrick Gundry-White,
• warm-up classes,
• exploring flute techniques,
• flute choir,
• small ensembles,
• a flute shop,
• and plenty of time for socialising with new friends.
The course will be held at Whaley Hall, Reservoir Rd, Whaley Bridge, High Peak SK23 7BL.
www.whaleyhall.com. Situated between Buxton and Manchester, the venue is easily reached by
rail, road or air.
The residential course is fully catered and accommodation is in single-sex twin bedrooms.
There are a maximum of 24 residential places available and there will be at least four staff
members in attendance throughout the weekend. The cost is £210 for the weekend.
The non-residential course includes meals, excluding breakfast, and attendance at all classes.
The cost is £115 for the weekend.
We are also offering a small number of places for students to attend on the Sunday.
The day ticket costs £60 and will include lunch and Katherine’s masterclass and recital.
