Whipple Heights Monthly Newsletter May 2015 SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR (Under the Sea….An Ocean of Books!) We had an extremely successful Book Fair again this year! With that in mind, we would like to thank everyone that supported by either purchasing books and/or volunteering their time to help! Profits from this event help fund our own school library. In addition to selling books at the fair, monies were collected for our Scholastic Service Project: One for Books. Essentially, the library is permitted to keep the change collected, in order to buy even more books for our school library. Scholastic matches those monies and uses it to buy books for students in need. Thank you for supporting this service project! Volunteers play an important role in the Book Fair. We would especially like to thank our Chairperson, Mandy Dale, for the many hours she put into making this Book Fair such a success! This was her first year as Chairperson and she did a FABULOUS job. One final note about the book fair, we usually pair our Right to Read Week with the fair itself. This year we opted to instead have it directly follow the Book Fair. This gave students a chance to win the posters that were displayed during the Book Fair by reading at home each night and returning their parent signed tickets on time. Winners are drawn from those tickets. Thank you for helping us celebrate R E A D I N G! Upcoming Events Below is a listing of specific events scheduled for this coming month! We surpassed our goal raising a total of $1,448.30 for Perry Helping Perry. Our 1st grade students raised the most money with our 4th graders running neck and neck with them the entire collection period. Because of this, we opted to provide both grade levels with an afternoon treat (popcorn) and an extra recess. A big THANKS to all of our students and families for supporting this most charitable cause. General Housekeeping… We make every effort to go outside for recess, even if we have to stick to the blacktop only. Please make sure students are fully dressed for the weather. If students are not dressed warmly they will have to remain inside on the bench by the office during recess. Many of you have been receiving form letters regarding attendance. This is part of our revised policy at Perry Local. You will receive a form letter at strategic points starting with the 3rd non-medical absence. Please make every attempt to obtain a medical excuse whenever your child is absent due to illness. If visiting your student for lunch, please remember NO outside food is permitted in the cafeteria except a home packed lunch. All parents have 24hour access to Pinnacle for the purpose of monitoring student grades. If you aren’t sure how to monitor your student’s progress through this system please contact your student’s teacher. Thank you to everyone who has sent in Box Tops and Campbell's labels and helped to make this another successful year! The classroom that collects the most during the school year receives a pizza party at the end of May. Currently Mrs. Ousley's 4th grade class is leading with Mrs. Daughery's 4th grade class close behind. The last collection date will be May 15th. I would also like to give a HUGE thank you to Kim Baxter, Kristine Dragos, Betsy Ward, Val Newsome, Melissa Presutti and Angel Henne for all of their help with counting! Have a GREAT summer!
