Why use the IEBC?
 When dealing with existing buildings, local code
officials have to recognize and understand the local
climate, such as economic development, revitalization
efforts, and political influences while at the same time
securing public safety related to the built
environment.
Purpose and Intent of the IEBC
The IEBC is a collection of all codes relating to existing
buildings in one volume.

2000 Uniform Code for Building Conservation Draft
The IEBC encourages the use and reuse of existing
buildings that adequately protect health, safety, and
welfare while requiring reasonable upgrades and
improvements that do not unnecessarily increase
construction costs.

Determining Compliance is done three ways:
 Prescriptive Compliance Method
 Complies with Chapter 3 of the IEBC and the IFC
 Work Area Compliance Method
 Complies with Chapters 4 – 12 of the IEBC
 Performance Compliance Method
 Complies with Chapter 13 of the IEBC
What is the IEBC?
Internationally, code officials

edition is designed to meet this
need through model code
regulations that safeguard the
public health and safety in all
communities, large and small.
