Program Description
Summer BUILD mentors, provide literacy support to K-8th grade youth in Berkeley summer programs, and help youth
foster a love of reading. You will be expected to serve approximately 3-10 hours per week, and must work at least two
days at a site.
If you have a federal Work Study allocation for the 2015-2016 year you may be paid. If not, you can receive education
units or volunteer. You must choose whether you want to work for Work Study pay or education units. Any one hour of
time cannot count towards both.
 Volunteer/Earn Units: You can volunteer to mentor or earn 1-3 units for Ed 97/197
 Work-Study: Earn $12.50 per hour if you are eligible for work-study; not sure if you are eligible?

Read one-to-one with the students you are assigned to mentor
Support your students’ reading by offering reading strategies to help them with their accuracy, fluency, and
comprehension
Fill out Reading Logs chronicling your reading with scholars
Encourage reading for fun
Collaborate with mentor team to recognize scholar’s accomplishments at the end of the summer with a Reading
Awards ceremony
When appropriate, lead fun, engaging activities for youth that build literacy skills
Know and follow site protocols including dress code and child abuse & neglect reporting policies
Commit to at least two days of being on site
Provide a nurturing environment for BUILD scholars to learn and grow
Work to develop a strong, supportive community among student mentors
Develop and maintain relationships with parents and/or summer site staff
BUILD Trainings & Meetings all events you must attend are highlighted
 Attend Summer BUILD Mentor Orientation on Friday, June 12th , 10am-5pm (on campus)
 Attend site orientation as scheduled by your site, and any required trainings
 Attend weekly meetings with Summer BUILD Student Director and your mentor team
If you cannot make the June 12th orientation you are not eligible to work through Summer BUILD

Complete biweekly CalTime timecard (Work Study), paper timesheets (Ed units/volunteers), and other reports by
scheduled deadlines
Complete monthly online bCourses reflections
Complete program and site evaluations
Preferred Qualifications
 If Work Study eligible, must have met the March FAFSA deadline
 Demonstrated interest in working with youth and prior experience with youth
 Demonstrated experience working in diverse communities
 Love for reading, and ability to teach literacy
 Patience, particularly when working with children, and ability to make learning fun
 Consciousness of safety and ability to reduce risks for children in a summer camp environment
 Excellent organizational skills
 Strong written and oral communication skills
