Introduction
RAHMA Islamic Relief registered on August 31, 2009 as a nonprofit, nongovernmental entity under The
Trust Act, 1882. RIR is a national-level NGO in Pakistan, inspired by the Islamic charity principles and
working for improving lives of the people irrespective of their gender, caste, color, religion or political
views.
The massive earthquake of October 2005 that hit Pakistan’s north was the element that brought
together the group of people who today govern RAHMA. Initially RAHMA worked as a team of
volunteers on various relief and small-scale development activities funded by Pakistani Diaspora
community in Norway and other developed countries.
Disaster relief, rescue and recovery have always been a top priority at RAHMA since 2005. RAHMA staffs
and volunteers are always ready to help people struck by natural or man-made disasters anywhere in
Pakistan. RAHMA has provided relief support to people affected by 2005 earthquake, the floods of 2010,
2012 and 2013 and the IDPs crisis of Malakand in 2009 and North Waziristan Agency in 2014.
In the development sector, RAHMA has experienced rapid growth in the healthcare sector particularly
with development of a “sustainable basic healthcare model” for rural and underserved areas. Upon this
health model, RAHMA has established health centers in district Kotli (AJK) and district Rahim Yar Khan
(Punjab), which are proving quality services. RAHMA has also considerable expertise in the informal
basic education, livelihood development and water and sanitation areas.
Being an organization inspired by the Islamic charity concepts, RAHMA has integrated seasonal activities
like the Ramadan Iftaar-us-Saaim project and the Qurbani Project into its programmes on permanent
basis. These projects provide social protection to the most vulnerable and poor people during Ramadan
and Eid-ul-Azha each year respectively.

Mission
To improve the life quality of vulnerable people through sustainable development and ensure timely
humanitarian assistance in need, by:

Reaching out to people with limited or no access to basic services, complementing, but not
substituting, the efforts of government and other providers.
Enabling rural people create services they need and giving them access to the opportunities by:
o Organizing them into viable social groups.
o Giving them a feeling of empowerment that reinforces the poverty reduction process.
o Convincing them that they can plan and act to improve their lives.
o Capacity building for use of resources to an optimal advantage.

Geographic Focus
Being a national NGO, RAHMA has worked in all parts of Pakistan including Punjab, Sindh, KhyberPakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, while we have also provided
relief assistance to conflict-affected IDPs from FATA in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. We have a central office in
Rawalpindi and two Area Offices in district Kotli and district Rahim Yar Khan.
Priority Thematic Areas
RAHMA’s major areas of operations and the details of our projects in these areas are as follows:
Disaster Relief, Rescue and Recovery





Rescue support and saving lives and assets of
people during emergencies, providing them
psychological support, first aid and ambulance
service
Food aid for affected communities in natural
and man-made disasters
Nutritional Support for children and women
affected by disasters
Provision of Non-Food Items including clothes,
blankets, water storage items and utensils.
Early recovery assistance including agricultural
support to small farmers, by provision of
seeds, fertilizers and agricultural inputs and
other interventions in water supply, sanitation,
shelter and healthcare
Healthcare
RAHMA strives to achieve sustainable improvements in
health conditions among geographically remote and
economically challenged groups, and to contribute to
the government’s efforts to achieve health related
MDGs. RAHMA’s focus in the health sector is on the
following areas:
 Primary Healthcare with focus on providing
quality diagnostic services, treatment and
raising awareness regarding health and
hygiene
 Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH)
 Medical camps, Mobile medical clinics in
geographically challenging areas
 Health and hygiene awareness raising,
especially in areas with an emergency situation
Education
Livelihood development
RAHMA has been working towards promoting basic
literacy among those who do not have access to
education and ensuring primary schooling for all boys
and girls, by:

Setting-up or supporting schools in rural area
and urban slums,
 Sponsorships for orphan and vulnerable
children in rural and urban poor areas,
especially in urban slums
 Increasing mass literacy by establishing adult
literacy centers
RAHMA has been striving for reducing poverty among
rural and urban poor. In this regard, we believe in the
Chinese saying “If you give me a fish, I’ll eat today, but if
you teach me how to fish, I’ll be eating for the rest of
my life”. Our livelihood development projects work on:
 Enhancing self-employment through training in
employable skills
 Helping disaster-affected people in restoration
of livelihoods through support in the form of
agricultural inputs
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Social Protection (Seasonal Projects)
RAHMA believes that an equal access to safe drinking
water and proper sanitation is a basic human right.
Reduced access to safe drinking water results in
spreading of water-borne diseases, which greatly
jeopardize the quality of life of vulnerable people.
RAHMA has been providing water-storage vessels,
water-purifiers and safe drinking water to communities
RAHMA has been striving to help the poor and socially
vulnerable people, through various small acts of
kindness, according the principles of Islamic faith. In this
regard, there are two special Islamic occasions, upon
which we help the poor and socially excluded groups:

households at the beginning of the holy month

affected by floods and the recent drought in Thar
desert. We have also helped communities in southern
Punjab and AJK through installation of hand-pumps and
electric pumps for water. After the 2013 drought in
Thar desert (Sindh), our teams have been working on
WASH project, during which, dozens of deep water
wells have been dug up, which not only provides safe
drinking water for the people of Thar and their cattle,
but will also save them from such catastrophic disasters
in future.

Apart from these regular seasonal projects, RAHMA also

RAHMA Responds to Crisis abroad
Although RAHMA Pakistan has a mandate to focus the areas within Pakistan, yet RAHMA is sensitive to
humanitarian crisis abroad and tends to provide emergency relief to affected people outside Pakistan,
with the support of local partner organizations. In 2011, RAHMA team visited Dadaab Refugee Camp in
Kenya and surrounding camps in Kenya and Somalia and provided relief assistance in the form of food
items, non-food items and Qurbani meat to camps which were accessible, keeping in view volatile
security situation.
Similarly, in response to the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar’s West Arakan state, RAHMA provided
emergency food support and Qurbani meat to internally displaced Rohingya minority people in
Myanmar and Rohingya refugees in south-eastern Bangladesh, with the help of local partner
organization. RAHMA also helped established a vocational training institute for Rohingya refugee youth
and local youth in Chittagong city that greatly helped improve their employable skills.
Governance Structure
The Board of Trustees (BoT) as a group has legal responsibility for the decision making, actions and
operation of the organization. The board consists of volunteers from different fields, who oversee
operations of RAHMA Islamic Relief on regular basis. BoT in supervision of the elected Chairman is
involved in overall governance of RAHMA Islamic Relief, as follows:
 Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability;
 Determine the programme and geographic focus;
 Policy development and implementation in the area of governance, financial affairs, HR,
procurement etc;
 Resource Mobilization;
 Enhance organization’s public standing.
