Dear ROSC Member, Happy Spring!
Little buds are coloring the tree branches; bulb flowers
are opening to the sun. Warmer breezes blow the fields
and forests, as spring has finally sprung! Isn't it wonderful to see the wonders of spring? I
welcome the changes around us in nature, and
embrace the newness of the season after the long
winter. This time of year, Europe just explodes with
color! I think it may be my new favorite! This new season brings beautiful changes,
excitement, and anticipation of what's yet to
come. Fantastic things are blossoming in Team ROSC,
too! I'm excited about what's waiting for us in the
coming season. It's great to see our group "bloom and
grow" in so many ways. Please join us in enjoying all
that this season of ROSC has to offer. It's wonderful to
have you as part of our group. Wishing you lots of sunshine! Cary

opportunity to get to know each other a little

Family: Three kids - Erik 8, Abby 6 (pushing 16), and Chip 44 :).
Hobbies: Tennis, wine, golf, writing, wine, rock climbing, foodie, wine, military kid
advocate and closet Housewives of New Jersey fan.
A thing or two you might find interesting :
I'm a native Vegan born and raise in Las Vegas. I worked for a mob lawyer and I've
played tennis with Tony Bennett and Andre Agassi albeit I was 9 years old. I also had a hand in baking the world largest birthday cake, hosting a 100,000-person
parade, marrying 100 couples at once and 450 events celebrating my hometown birthday.
I was the Executive Director for the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration before my husband
swept me off my feet - and moved me to Alabama J.
I write for Military Spouse Magazine and GI JOBS Magazine. I cover military families,
special interest stories and successful transitioned veterans.
Favorite Location/Assignment: Washington DC. We lived in Burke VA and it felt like
home. I loved the cherry blossom tree-lined streets, museums during the week and
restaurants only a foodie would love. I also really enjoyed getting the Washington Post
delivered to my door and living near the epicenter of the country. I hope to go back one
to lay down roots. Now if my husband will get on board with me plan. :)
Favorite place (to eat, shop or experience) in Germany: I'm a bit of a newbie, so my
experience is limited. However, I really LOVE the Bernd Blockhaus near my home
Weilerbach/Schwedelbach. Only open weekends, great traditional German food and
beer, indoor and outdoor seating, has an open field to play soccer with the kids and it sits
on a hill overlooking farmland. http://www.bernds-blockhaus.de/

Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor
Don't you just LOVE the Barbarossa Bakeries around Ramstein?
Well, here's a little info about their name sake. Frederick I, also known as Frederick Barbarossa, was the Holy Roman Emperor from
1155 until his death. He was elected King of Germany at Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and
crowned in Aac
hen on 9 March 1152.Wikipedia
Born: 1122, Weingarten, Württemberg
Died: June 10, 1190, Silifke, Turkey
Spouse: Beatrice I, Countess of Burgundy (m. 1156)
Parents: Judith of Bavaria, Duchess of Swabia, Frederick II, Duke of Swabia
Children: Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor, Philip of Swabia, more
Siblings: Conrad, Count Palatine of the Rhine
Frederick Barbarossa, King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor, challenged papal
influence and sought to establish German supremacy in Europe. He engaged in six
expeditions against Italy and served for a time in both the Second and the Third
Crusades.
Shortly after being made Duke of Swabia, 25yearold Frederick set out with his uncle
Conrad III to fight in the Second Crusade, an expedition that proved disastrous but
that led the king to appoint his nephew as successor to the German crown. Within a
span of four years, Frederick was elected King of Germany, King of Italy, and Holy
Roman Emperor. The empire that Frederick inherited was actually a collection of over
1600 individual states, each with its own prince, and the new king achieved little
success in his attempts to unite the largely different provinces.

Like his predecessors, Frederick argued with the pope over who held ultimate
authority in the Church, and after being excommunicated he undertook six
expeditions to Italy to try to arouse support for his antipope Paschal III. He was
largely unsuccessful, however, and during two of his visits he was forced out of the
country by the powerful Lombard League, a group of Roman citizens who opposed
the harsh Imperial taxes. Finally, in 1177, Frederick and the true pope, Alexander, were reconciled, and the
Emperor recognized the pope's supremacy in the Church. This solved, he turned his
attention eastward, where new problems were brewing in the Holy Land. He set out
on the Third Crusade with a massive army but did not manage to reach Antioch
before he was carried away by the Saleph River and drowned. German legend tells
that Frederick is not truly dead but sleeps with his knights in the caves of a Bavarian
mountain, to awake only when ravens cease to fly around its peak.

German Easter Traditions
For those hardy souls who gave up sweets for Lent, Easter brings a sweet release from the
torment of a confectioneryfree existence! On Easter Sunday, children large and small search for
eggs brought by the Osterhase (Easter Bunny).

Perhaps they will also find some unique and delicious German Easter chocolates hidden among
the yellow Forsythia bushes and crocus leaves. They could find nougatfilled egg shells from Gut

chocolate), Schaumküsse (marshmallow kisses) from Halloren, Feodora tin eggs filled with

Napolitains (small flat chocolates), Feodora Katzenzungen chocolates, Niederegger marzipan eggs,
or highquality, singlesource origin chocolates from Hachez (Bremen) or Rausch (Berlin). Many of
these products are available at World Market stoees, German specialty food shops and The Taste

The Easter bunny, first mentioned in German writing in the 1500s, is a symbol of the fertile
spring. In the early 1800s, the first edible Easter bunnies, made of pastry and sugar, came to the
market in Germany. The tradition was brought to American shores by German settlers arriving in
Pennsylvania in the 18th century. Today, German children still believe that if they are good, the
Osterhase, will lay a nest of colored eggs and hide them throughout the home.
The Easter egg, a symbol of new life, also has European roots. The practice of decorating boiled
eggs began in Europe, where Easter eggs have long been painted with bright colors reminiscent
of burgeoning spring flowers. Today the tradition of giving Easter eggs and other Easter gifts
transcends religious, ethnic and cultural affiliations. Painting, hiding and finding handcolored
Easter eggs and (along with some German chocolate bunnies and candies) will bring smiles to
children of all ages.
In Germany Easter eggs also blossom on trees Easter trees (Osterstrauch)! Spring's bare tree
branches are hung with brightly colored eggs held by gay ribbons. You can find fancifully hand
painted eggs made just for this purpose at German retail stores. However, it's more traditional
and more enjoyable to make the eggs at home with family and friends.
In Germany the Easter celebration starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday, with traditional dishes
for each day. The first day is Gründonnerstag, or Maundy Thursday. The
name Gründonnerstag derives from greinen, an old German word for mourning or crying.
However, since Gründonnerstag sounds like "green Thursday" in German, many people celebrate
by eating green dishes like Seven Herb Soup, made with spinach, parsley, leek, chive, dandelion
and sorrel. On Karfreitag (Good Friday) people traditionally eat a fish dinner with their family.
Then on Ostersonntag (Easter Sunday), the whole family gathers together to celebrate with a
festive meal. The main dish for this meal is often lamb, since it represents innocence and
humility. Ostermontag (Easter Monday) is also a holiday and another occasion for families to
come together and celebrate. In some regions in Eastern Europe, it is a tradition for young lads to
spray water on innocent victims, usually girls or friends. This may result in fullfledged water
fights. In Hungary and adjacent regions, the liquid of choice is a bit of perfume ... real gentlemen
use, of course, expensive and carefully selected perfume for the ladies of their choice.
After the holiday, the pleasure of a German Easter continues with leftovers! One traditional
Easter leftover dish is called Eier in gruener Sosse (Eggs in Green Sauce), which, despite its name,
it is a delicious favorite. For more Easter recipes, including recipes for festive Easter cakes, visit
