CENTENARY OF ANZAC SERVICE Our school celebrated the ANZAC Centenary with a service on Friday, April 24. It was a positive event and pleasing to see the way our whole school community could pay an appropriate tribute to all of our former and current service men and women. The event was very professionally conducted by our student representatives and we were lucky enough to have two special guests join us in speaking at the service. Mr Barry Hollitt and Mr Paul Papalia are both former servicemen who have been ongoing contributors to our school community and their speeches were well received and much appreciated. It was also pleasing to see so many class representatives and Defence Force families involved in the service, in combination with our specially dressed guests from Bethanie Waters. We would like to thank all of the staff who contributed to the running of the event and all of the parents who attended to share this special anniversary with our students. On Friday, April 24, 2015 Rockingham Lakes Primary School and Peel Language Development School held a service to commemorate ANZAC Day. On this day we remembered those who died for us and those who served our country and those who are still serving today. I am the oldest student on our campus so I was given the opportunity to take a wreath to the flag pole that was flying at half-mast with the youngest student in the school. We represented all the students at our school. ANZAC Day is a special day to me because my great, great, great Uncle Bill served in one of the wars. He was shot in the chest but survived. I think of him on this day and all the other soldiers that fought with him. In class we did lots of activities that reminded us of what ANZAC Day is and we learnt a lot about the different wars. Lest We Forget Robert - Year 6 Principal’s Pen ANZAC Service Last Friday all our PP-Yr 6 students, along with staff and many parents, participated in a very special ANZAC service. As a part of the centenary of the first ANZACs our service included two songs from our choir, a special address from Mr Barry Hollitt, each of our students from Defence force families laying a flower and a display of work about ANZAC day which students had done in classes prior. It was a powerful and respectful service. NAPLAN Term 2 is always a busy term in schools, particularly with our NAPLAN assessment occurring during week 4. This assessment will include all year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students across Australia. There is often media hype around NAPLAN and this can sometimes affect student who are sitting these tests. It is important that students know they are expected to try their hardest, but that it is just one small part of their time at school and not significantly more important than any other day. We do not want students to become anxious about NAPLAN as this invariably results in poorer results for the student. Please reassure your child/ren and at the same time encourage them to do and be their best at whatever they are doing. Website We are in the process of re-designing our website and also having an ‘App’ developed for our school which will help us communicate with parents and keep you informed and up-to-date with significant events on our school calendar. More information will come home shortly so please keep an eye out for this. P&C Disco On Friday, May 15 the P&C are running a Disco for our students. There will be two sessions, Kindy to Year 2 from 4:30 to 6:00pm and Year 3 to Year 6 from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Pre-sale tickets are $5:00 and it will be a Pyjama theme. Please look out for a note from the P&C to come home soon. Students will have to be collected by a parent at the end of the disco. The P&C are also running a Mother’s Day stall next week on May 7 & 8. Please also look out for another note from the P&C about this event. Before School A quick reminder that students are not allowed to play on any play equipment before school. All students should arrive between 8:25 and 8:35 and go straight to class. If a student arrives prior to 8:25, they must go directly to the undercover area and wait there, unless they are seated with their parents outside their classroom. Under direct supervision from parents, students may use the play equipment after school. Tim Sewell Principal Easter Egg Raffle Thanks to everyone for your generous donations towards our Easter Raffle, much appreciated. I also received feedback from a number of parents who were disappointed that we had not drawn the raffle on the last day and involved the students in this process, as had occurred in previous years. Based on this feedback, next year we will go back to the previous model and hopefully include some of the Easter Hat Parades too. Thanks for the feedback. There are a variety of items for sale with prices ranging from $3. All donations of unwanted clean uniforms are gratefully accepted. Donations can be left at the front office or alternately given to your child's class teacher. Lego and Construction Club Rockingham Lakes Primary School is starting a Lego and construction club. If you are interested we will meet on a Tuesday afternoons from 2.50pm to 3.45pm. It will be open to all age groups. There will be 20 places available, on a first come basis. Please see Mrs Hider to reserve your place. Permission slips will be sent home to these students. This is a free event for all those who attend. All students attending will have to be collected by parents unless prior arrangements have been made. We are looking forward to having a blast with our future engineers.
