The M1 Abrams is an American third-generation main battle
tank produced by the United States. It is named after General
Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander
of U.S. military forces in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972.
The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the
M60 tank. It served for over a decade alongside the improved
M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. The M1 remains the
principal main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine
Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia
and Iraq.
In March 2004, the Australian Army announced the purchase of
59 US Army M1A1 tanks to enter service from 2007. The
contract was signed in November 2005 and the first five were
handed over in February 2006 at GDLS in Lima, Ohio.
The first 18 tanks were delivered to the Australian Army at the
School of Armour in Victoria in September 2006. The remaining
41, to be based in Darwin, were delivered in March 2007.

Acting President’s Report
Peter Stephenson OAM
STATE COUNCIL
R SL N SW
On 15th December 2014, I found
myself unexpectedy in the position of
Acting State President RSL NSW,
following the resignation of Don
Rowe OAM, and also following John
Haines AM, stepping down from that
position due to other commitments.
This of course meant I only had a little
over two weeks before our financial
reporting period ended.
Readers of this report will note from
pages 9-15, Don Rowe, State
Councillors and other RSL members
led another extensive year of
commemorations and related RSL
activities.
The highlight of the year was in
November when I, along with Don
Rowe, John Haines and Rod White
attended the RSL National Congress
held in Perth. On completion we
headed south for the "Albany Convoy
Centenary" commemoration.
And what an event it was. The
reenactment just had to be seen. It
was a wonderful moment, setting a
standard for what is to come during
the 2014 - 18 commemorative period.
The new ANZAC centre at Albany is a
truly world class facility incorporating
carefully selected interpretive
materials and state of the art on-line
and interactive elements.
I was left with an eerie feeling while
standing at the top of The Convoy
Walk overlooking King George
Sound. Seeing modern naval ships
but imagining those of the past era
packed full of sailors and soldiers
bound for the battlefields of WW1.
I wish now, to farewell and
acknowledge the good work and
faithful dedication of Don Rowe, the
first Vietnam Veteran elected to RSL
NSW State Council more than 30
years ago, with 11 years contribution
as State President.
Don achieved much during his tenure
and will be sorely missed by all. I’m
sure we all wish Don a long happy
retirement with an early restoration to
good health.

Treasurer’s Report
Rod White AM, RFD
STATE COUNCIL
R SL N SW
On behalf of the RSL State Council, I
have pleasure in presenting a
summary of the audited financial
statements for the Returned and
Services League of Australia (NSW
Branch) for the year ended 31st
December 2014.
The complete financial statements for
the State branch are at the League’s
website www.rslnsw.org.au as are the
financial statements for the RSL
Central Council of Women’s
Auxiliaries, NSW RSL Youth Council,
Reginald William Coward Trust, St
Mary’s RSL Memorial Fund and the
ANZAC House Trust. Within this
Annual Report is the key financial
performance data for the RSL State
Branch which is presented in
graphical form.
The overall result for the period was a
surplus of $865,258 compared to
$665,268 for the year ended 2013.
Net Assets increased to $42,571,610
and income increased to $2,453,580.
The total result for the period for
Property Plant and Equipment is
$30,790,002.
RSL State Branch, during 2013,
entered into a contract to purchase
the property at 262 Castlereagh
Street Sydney for $8,690,000 and a
Call Option for a period of 12
months. A total of $255,950 has been
incurred in respect of the option fee
and a development application.
Further details can be found in the
financial statements.
In 2010 State Council resolved to
establish the RSL NSW Support and
Assistance Fund specifically to fund
the increased cost of capitation fees
to the RSL National Headquarters
and to provide assistance to subBranches. During 2014 additional
costs associated with capitation fees
were $99,690 compared to $104,540
the previous year and financial
assistance provided to sub-Branches
totalled $53,261 up on the $43,330
for 2013.
For this Fund to remain viable and to
meet its responsibilities, RSL subBranches are encouraged to donate
to the Fund as a very meaningful way
of supporting those sub-Branches
that do not have the means to carry
out their duties as others do. In 2014
$148,526 was donated by subBranches compared to $77,450 in
2013.
The State Branch compliance audit
team led by Mr John Boyle conducts
on site audits to assist sub-Branches,
especially the principal elected
officers. This process enhances sub
Branch administration and effective
governance. Trustees and other
Executive officers are encouraged to
utilize the supportive services from
State Branch to ensure overall
compliance as required.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank sub-Branch officers, for their
continuing commitment in
maintaining effective management of
sub-Branch assets. May I also thank
the State Branch Chief Financial
Officer Miss Annette Mulliner OAM
and her staff, for their professional
contribution in support of our
members.

STATE BRANCH
R SL N SW
It is with great pleasure that I pen my
report for the year 2014 of The Returned
and Services League of Australia (NSW
Branch). The year was another year
supporting the Defence community in
NSW.
prevents me from detailing all that
outstanding work. Suffice to say that the
volunteer spirit of the RSL is alive and well
in RSL sub-Branches and District Councils.
Bravo Zulu, you canbe justifiblerly proud
of your efforts.
The League and its entities have
continued our progress on engaging with
the ADF in partnerships that benefit the
serving member. This was achieved by
our continued support of the adaptive
sport programs such as the Canadian
Allied Winter Sorts Camp, the highly
successful Invictus Games and the Marine
Corps Trials. We have continued to grow
our relationship with the ADF through our
relationship with 1RTU RAAF Wagga
Wagga, the extremely well received
welcoming and farewell of RAN ships
deploying on Operation Slipper and later
Operation Manitou and the
commemorative pilgrimage to Hellfire
Pass.
The staff at ANZAC House have been
keen to assist RSL sub-Branches with their
enquiries. The release of the document
‘Looking Back Moving Forward’ was
designed to assist RSL sub-Branch
understand more clearly the individuals
that work in ANZAC House and the
services that they provide to the RSL
network across NSW. The Compliance
Audit Team carried out 76 audits with RSL
sub-Branches. This was a substantial
increase on 2013. The overall response
from sub-Branches has been positive.
Sub-Branches appreciate the guidance
offered by the team in further enabling
them to carry on with their mission in an
efficient and effective manner with due
cognisance of their compliance to the
Constitution and regulatory bodies.
Sometimes the burden of compliance can
seem an insurmountable task; but the
collective experience of the Compliance
Audit Team continue to offer sound and
informative advice on matters of concern
to sub-Branches.
On another front, RSL AFOF has been
busy with the provision of recreational
equipment & care packages to our
deployed troops right around the globe.
The letters of thanks from the
commanders of various units on
operations have been extremely
heartening as we can see that our efforts
have been targeted in the correct areas.
RSL AFOF has also supported Forces
Entertainment to provide various forms of
entertainment to the men & women
serving on deployment. The generosity of
the entertainers in providing their skills,
talent & time to travel to far flung corners
of the world to provide the unique Aussie
entertainment that they are famous for is
a credit to them. The RSL funded and
provided the entertainment during the
Vietnam War and so it is pleasing that we
can again be involved in bringing some
cheer to those serving our nation
overseas.
The men and women of RSL subBranches & District Councils have
continued to volunteer their time to
further the aims and objects of the
League. These wonderful volunteers carry
out all manner of charitable deeds for the
Defence communities within their
jurisdiction. I thank each and every one
for their hard work and dedication to
keeping the commemoration of our fallen
at top-of-mind and for their care and
compassion in assisting those serving and
ex-serving members who require
assistance. There is so much good work
being done within RSL sub-Branches for
their Defence community that space
I would like thank all the staff at ANZAC
House, from all RSL NSW related entities,
for their work in supporting RSL
members, sub-Branches, District Councils,
State Council and the various committees
of the League.
Your State Council have been committed
to working diligently to provide the
appropriate strategic guidance and
direction for RSL over the year of 2014.
One highlight is the initative to embrace
the veterans of Timor-Leste and form a
strong mentoring partnership with their
fledgling veterans groups. The Timor
Leste veterans have turned to the League
to provide guidance and support by
tapping into our wealth of experience in
commemoration, care & compassion for
veterans & families and our non-political/
non-sectarian interaction with
government.
Finally, late in 2014 the longest
serving member of State Council and
former State President, Mr Don Rowe
OAM resigned after 33 years of
service to the League. I wish him all
the best for the future and I trust he
will achieve a return to good health
as quickly as possible.

STATE BRANCH
R S L N SW
As we approach the 100th
Anniversary of the League and
reflect on what “we are about” it has
not changed significantly in that
time.
Sub-Branches still provide pension
and advocacy services, organise and
conduct commemoration services,
provide welfare to members and
their dependants conduct the RSL
Funeral Tribute and foster
comradeship.
What has changed significantly is the
accountability for what “we are
about”, with the introduction of the
Australian Charities and Not-forProfits Commission (ACNC) and the
Deed entered into with the
Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in
2012 – the League at all levels is
required to provide greater
accountability for all its activities.
This has significantly increased the
administrative burden on our subBranches, particularly with the
requirement to record the volunteer
hours. To assist sub-Branches, State
Branch is lodging with the ACNC for
all sub-Branches their annual activity
statements and is the primary
contact for the League in New South
Wales.
The State Branch audit team visited
76 sub-Branches in 2014 (54 in 2013)
and I would like to thank the
executives of each sub-Branch for
their welcome, support and cooperation with the audit team during
their visits and my thanks also to Mr
John Boyle, Business Services
Manager and his team of Mr Julian
Waetford, Miss Corrine Jenkins and
Mrs Patricia Gallagher for their work
in ensuring the successful
implementation of the audit
program.
During 2014 I assisted sixteen subBranches, two District Councils and
one Women’s Auxiliary by providing
auditing services, it was my pleasure
to provide this assistance.

Australian Forces Overseas Fund
Secretary’s Report
John Boyle
In 2014 RSL AFOF provided parcels to serving
members of the Australian Defence Force and
Australian Federal Police posted overseas. The
majority of these personnel serve in
peacemaking missions on a six month rotation
basis and, to ensure that each receives the
benefit of a package during their period of
service, the packages are made available for
delivery twice yearly. These packages are
loosely referred to as the mid-year and
Christmas packages.
In 2014, RSL AFOF - NSW Division
commitment to supporting of serving ADF
members around the globe continued as
follows:
• HMA Naval Ships on deployment with
Operation SLIPPER were provided with
Satellite TV services
• Providing support of Cultural Tours for
HMA Ships whilst on deployment on
Operation SLIPPER
• Providing to the ADF troops serving in
the MEAO with recreational
equipment
• Provide support to cover expenses,
allowances and in-theatre flights for
Forces Entertainment personnel &
entertainers
• Provide support to the ADF troops
serving with the FCU MEAO with
recreational equipment and amenities
• Provide support to the ADF troops
serving in Operation ASLAN
• Provide support to the ADF troops
serving in Operation ACCORDIAN
• Provide support to the ADF troops
serving Operation PALADIN
• Provide support to the ADF troops
serving PSB FPC and 39 PSB RSO&I
(Afghan)
This ongoing support has led to a special
relationship being formed between the ADF
and RSL AFOF - NSW Division. This was borne
out by a recent request received by RSL AFOF
- NSW Division from the ADF.
34
A request was received from the ADF to help
support our ADF Personnel and Exservicemen to attend the Invictus Games in
London. These Games allow Servicemen, Exservicemen and women from Australia, the
UK, the USA and other countries to compete
in an array of different Olympic and ParaOlympic sports. The Games offer a host of
benefits to injured soldiers that are about more
than just physical rehabilitation. The Games
also offer opportunities to ill or injured troops
to become more active through sport. RSL
AFOF (NSW Division) was able to help outfit
the ADF Ex-Service Contingent in the
appropriate clothing. It is hoped this
commitment will be an ongoing one.
This supports RSL AFOF - NSW Division policy
of providing ongoing support of to our ADF
personnel in which ever ways that we can be
of service.
2014 continued the tradition where we saw
volunteers from RSL State Branch, RSL subBranches and civilians from the Defence
Department and the Department of Veterans’
Affairs joining with serving members of the
Deployed Forces Support Unit (39th Battalion)
at Randwick Barracks in NSW to pack over
3,500 parcels, both May and November, for
shipment overseas.
These RSL AFOF parcels were sent to points
on the globe where ADF personnel are
serving. Australia has large numbers of
personnel serving in these overseas missions.
The packages contained various items to
remind personnel of home and included
ANZAC biscuits, glucose confectionery, salted
peanuts, muesli bars, lollies, a letter of
appreciation on behalf of all Australians, and
Membership contact details. It should be noted that it is essential for the
Fund to keep sufficient finances on hand, so
that in the event of a sudden requirement, RSL
AFOF can act immediately in support of our
forces.
We would like to acknowledge the fine effort
and support provided by John Cannings
OAM, our Honorary Solicitor, for his counsel,
Annette Mulliner OAM, Honorary Treasurer,
Barry Lloyd, Chartered Accountant, Honorary
Auditor and Don Rowe OAM, former State
President of The Returned and Services
League of Australia - NSW and State
Commissioner of RSL Australian Forces
Overseas Fund - NSW.

RSL NSW ANZAC Day March
Secretary’s Report
Bob Batty
ANZAC DAY
RSL NSW
2014 marked the 99th anniversary of the
commemoration of ANZAC Day and the
annual March through the streets of
Sydney’s CBD.
along with the fact that some
descendants groups decided to march
‘where they liked’, causing groups to
march completely out of forecast order.
Conducted on a day when torrential rain
set in, large crowds lined the city streets
to show their appreciation to the 15,222
March participants and many thousands
more enjoyed the coverage of the March
via the excellent live ABC television
coverage.
The Sydney ANZAC Day March is
supported by many organisations such as
the taxi companies and drivers who
convey the elderly and immobile
veterans, the Army drivers and vehicles
that transport the old diggers who
cannot walk the distance anymore, the St
Johns Ambulance medics who provide
first aid, the NSW Police, Ambulance and
Fire Brigades, the Scouts and the State
Emergency Service that provide
invaluable assistance along with many
others.
The Sydney ANZAC Day March
continues to be the largest
commemorative event for the city.
Her Excellency, The Honourable
Professor Dame Marie Bashir AC CVO,
Governor of New South Wales, was
March Leader in her last march as
Governor. Brigadier Mark Brewer,
representing Commander Forces
Command, Commodore Jonathan Mead,
representing Commander Australian
Fleet and Air Vice Marshal Mel Hupfield
DSC, Air Commander Australia, were the
senior ADF Officers participating.
New form up positions for, in particular
World War II veterans, were
implemented this year. This, along with
the inclement weather caused some
confusion amongst our elderly veterans,
36
Special appreciation must go to all the
volunteer marshals, without whose
tireless and often thankless endeavours
the March would not be as successful as
it is.
At last but not least a debt of gratitude is
owed to the more than 60 service and
community bands that not only volunteer
their time and effort to the spectacle of
the March but also allow the veterans to
keep in step over the March Route –
many performing their task on more than
one circuit.
Generations apart, past and present ADF members all come together as on ANZAC Day.

The annual CCWA Congress was held at
Burwood in May with the major
highlight, the election of a new president
with Robyn McKinnon deciding not to
continue in the Presidental role.
It was with great honour I accepted the
position as the new State President for
the next three years as elected by our
members. Robyn has been a wonderful
asset to our executive committee for
many years and I know I have big shoes
to fill here.
Peggy Watson was elected to the
position of Secretary, unfortunately she
had to resign due to ill health mid term.
A bi-election resulted with Margaret
Jarosz elected as the new Secretary.
The Councillors are all very dedicated to
our cause, unfortunately we had two
members resign due to unseen
circumstances.
A major raffle for the ‘Lest We Forget
Quilt’ successfully raised $37,032.
Another major raffle will be conducted in
40
2015 with the theme ‘In Flanders Field’,
complemented with an oil painting.
Our Country Councillors have been
holding their conferences and
luncheons; all seems to be going well as
attendance numbers have been very
supportive.
We have had a few Auxiliaries close
throughout the year due to age and ill
health however we have also gained two
new Auxiliaries at Finley and BalmainRozelle.
Membership has many new members to
organisation over the past twelve
months have been most welcome in our
our ranks.
CCWA is again looking towards the
future as many exciting activities are on
the horizon. We seek more publicity so
the general public will know who we are
and what we do by raising our money for
RSL Welfare.

DAY CLUBS
RSL NSW
This has been another very successful
year for the RSL Day Clubs program
throughout NSW.
Early in 2014 we saw the
commencement of a new Day Club in
Ulladulla. Also training of new volunteers
took place later this year which led to
the official opening of the Morisset RSL
Day Club.
We currently have 70 RSL Day Clubs
actively operating in NSW.
The Annual Day Clubs Coordinators
Conference was well attended again this
year. The Training Workshops held
throughout two days provided all who
attended, the opportunity to network, to
share their experiences and to enhance
their skills.
The RSL sub-Branches continue to have
a very strong association with their Day
Clubs. This association through
sponsorship and support is fundamental
to the life of the Day Club Program.
State Branch would like to sincerely
thank each of those sub-Branches and
strongly encourage them to continue
with their ongoing involvement in 2015.
42
We would also like to sincerely thank
each and every one of our Day Club
Coordinators, Management Committees
and volunteers for the wonderful work
and time that they have contributed to
their clubs over many years of service.
This commitment to service has been
the reason why the program is the
success it is today.
A special thanks goes to the Day Club
Committee Members for their hard
work, ensuring that NSW continues to
lead the way in the Day Club movement.
We welcomed this year, Sandra Bedding
and Stephanie Leishman who joined
Kathryn Hodgkinson as the team of
three DVA Community Support Advisors.
We thank them all for their support,
advice and assistance to each of the Day
Clubs.
We also thank our own Tom Barnsley for
all his tireless work in supporting each of
the individual Day Clubs throughout
2014.
RSL NSW is proud of their commitment
to the Day Club program over the past
37 years and acknowledges the
partnership and ongoing support of DVA
to this valuable and worthwhile program.

Adjutants Report
Douglas James
The Corps of Guards paraded on 19
January 2014 to refresh for the first
duty of the year being Australia Day.
A formal Parade was held in the
morning of Australia Day at which new
appointments were made to Pamela
Richardson to Wing Lieutenant, both
Richard Warburton and David Howells
to Sergeant and Ian Hallenan to
Corporal. Rosemary Stockley was
appointed Corporal on 19 January
2014 as she would be absent on

the Medal in the Order of Australia in
the Australia Day honours list and we
congratulated her in her absence.
We were invited by the Dean of St

Unknown Soldier. The Corps welcomed
visitors to the ANZAC Memorial
throughout the day assisting the
Guides on duty in answering questions
about the Memorial and our uniforms
but mainly being photographed by the
visitors. Photographs of the Corps
would have to be worldwide by now.
The Repatriation Department
continued to bring the Veterans who
are being taken on the various
Commemoration visits overseas to the
Memorial for a Wreath-laying and a
Star Ceremony for the start of the
44
Mission visit. The Corps assists with
these attendances giving them the
opportunity of interacting with the
Veterans who are eager to understand
our role just as much as we are eager
to host them.
In addition to these occasions the
Corps assisted with the visits of many
overseas Dignitaries from France,
Germany, (Chancellor of the Republic),
Thailand, Greece and United States.
These visits involved Wreath-laying and
Star Ceremonies Over the year we
assisted with 20 ceremonies.
Additional to these, the Corps paraded
for ceremonies for Boer War, RSL and
Schools Remember ANZAC, Fromelles,
VP Day at the Kokoda Track Walkway,
Kokoda Day Flag Raising at the Kokoda
Track and of course ANZAC Day.
The Corps was again invited to march
in the ANZAC Day March and got wet
as did the other marchers.
On 24 November 2014 it was the 80th
Anniversary of the opening of the
ANZAC Memorial with a service being
conducted. The Governor of New
South Wales, General The Honourable
David Hurley, AC DSC attended for the
first time after his appointment and laid

INSTITUTION
RSL NSW
During the past year the Trustees of the RSL Welfare
and Benevolent Institution have ensured that
appropriate resources are available for the
achievement of the Institutions Aims and Objectives.
Without the continuing support of the RSL subBranches, RSL Women’s Auxiliaries and many others,
we simply would not maintain the necessary capability
and meet increasing expectations.
The Trustees are the RSL (NSW Branch) State
President, State Honorary Treasurer and State
Secretary.
DefenceCare, our operational arm has significantly
increased its support to serving members of the
Australian Defence Force (ADF) and their families, in
addition to the substantial number of former members
of the ADF who turn to DefenceCare for a broad
range of support services.
DefenceCare is identified as the leading veteran
support agency throughout the ex-service community
and has formed important partnerships with many
groups to strengthen our financial base and increased
exposure.
Together with RSL LifeCare, DefenceCare is very
focussed on assisting those contemporary veterans
who have served our nation in recent campaigns and
are now facing major challenges in resettlement.
The Trustees have also enhanced their support to the
ADF by providing close support and leadership to
several ADF interactive sporting, cultural and
commemorative programmes, including; the Canadian
Allied Winter Sports Camp, Thailand pilgrimage to
Hellfire Pass and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, the
Allied Forces Invictus Games conducted in the United
Kingdom and the adaptive sports for the wounded
injured as part of the US Air Force Games in Nevada
and the US Marine Corps trials in California.
We encourage you to review this annual report to see
further details on the operations of the RSL WBI in
particular DefenceCare. If you require further
information, especially if considering a bequest or a
donation, please contact the Trustees at ANZAC

NSW public and private schools, TAFE and Universities
combined with several very active RSL sub-Branches
have again endorsed this annual art competition as the
project now moves forward for the third year of the new
competition format. Continued support has come from the NSW Premier’s
Department and Kokoda Adventure Company for the
major prize of a trip to Kokoda Track, Papua New
Guinea. The competition is starting to find its true
momentum amongst the student and art teacher
communities at grass root levels with more subBranches seeking involvement.
Winning entries again set a new benchmark with some
outstanding creative presentations. A first with a score

ceremony in Sydney. The competition is continuing to grow and expand with
some high quality artworks being available now that we
have the ANZAC Art Exhibition starting to roll. This
March, in 2015, we will have last year’s and this current
year’s award winners on display in two different venues
across Sydney during the same period – the art works
are suddenly in high demand!
Bigger things are planned to work this into the RSL
Centenary next year. We expect another record crop of
entries with the 2015 competition, launched earlier in
March to give art students an extended eight month
window of opportunity to submit entries.
Many thanks to the Art Council production and judging
teams; this is a true team event behind the scenes! A
big thank you to State Councillor, Ian Henderson, who
has introduced the Mosman High School to our art
community. They have hosted two great launches of
this art competition - last year and again in 2015.
2015 shapes up to be just as exciting as we look to the
real challenge for the commemoration years of 2015
and beyond for the RSL.
Well done to the Corporate Communications Team RSL
HQ, who really have rolled this RSL ANZAC Art Awards
Competition into an exciting innovative project
spreading our RSL brand to new communities and
especially to some new high profile corporate partners.

The trust was set up and administered by the Public
Trustee of New South Wales. Both the RSL of Australia
(New South Wales Branch) and the Vietnam Veterans’

annual income from the Trust shared equally by both
bodies.
A condition of the bequest is that the applicants had to
be enrolled or were planning to be enrolled in a

Sir Colin Hines
Scholarship
The State President conducted a presentation of Sir
Colin Hines Scholarships to the 2013 recipients at the
Hyde Park Forum on Wednesday 28 August 2013.
The aim of the Award is to perpetuate the name of
“ANZAC” and all it stands for in a contemporary and
significant way.
The Sir Colin Hines Scholarship Awards were
established by the Returned and Services League of
Australia (New South Wales Branch) to assist the
children of Vietnam Veterans with their tertiary
education.
First nominations for the award were called for in 1978
and are now implemented on an annual basis.
The Scholarship is available to all children of Vietnam
Veterans resident in New South Wales. The veteran’s
membership of the RSL is not a prerequisite.
The Scholarship is conducted through the State
Branch and is administered by a Committee
comprising a member of The Returned and Services
League of Australia (New South Wales Branch),
members of the Australian Vietnam Forces Welcome
Home Committee and a nominee of the Office of the
Board of Studies.
No entries received.
F.S. Maher

The F.S. Maher Memorial Scholarship was established
in 1972 to honour the memory of the late F.S. Maher, a

spouses.
Scholarship is in abeyance at present.
The awards are in the form of a Silver Medallion for the

the “ANZAC of the Year Awards”
Only one ANZAC Peace Prize is awarded annually for
outstanding efforts in promoting world understanding
and peace. The award is not given if the selection
panel does not identify a suitable candidate.
Up to seven ANZAC of the Year awards can be
awarded annually. The award is to recognise the
service of the Australian citizens or organisations to
their fellow human beings and the community in some
positive, compassionate and selfless manner.
The RSL ANZAC Peace prize for 2014 was not
awarded.

level.

contribution towards the betterment of veterans and
their families through the City of Rockingham RSL

FOR THE FALLEN
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England’s foam.
But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.
As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
The Ode comes from ‘For the Fallen’,
a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon
and was published in London in the Winnowing Fan;
Poems of the Great War 1914.

SYMBOLISM OF THE RSL
AFFILIATE BADGE
The Affiliate …
Badge includes three colours, red, white and blue and was designed by Mr Eric Smith, a
past President of the South Australian Branch of the RSL. The symbolism of the colours is
the same as that of the Service Members’ badge:
The Red …
Represents the blood tie of war upon which the Returned and Services League was
originally founded.
The White …
Stands for the purity of your motive in joining The League – to render service without
thought of personal gain or ambition.
The Blue …
Indicates your willingness to render that service to a comrade anywhere under the blue
sky – wherever that comrade may be.
The Crown …
At the top of the badge symbolises The League’s loyalty to the Queen.
Tri-Service Emblem …
At the heart of the badge representing the Navy, Army and Air Force and the link
between Affiliate Members, the RSL and our Armed Forces. The placement of this
symbol at the centre of the badge is representative of the fact that at the heart of
Affiliate membership is a commitment to honour those who have served our nation in
war and peace through their enlistment in Australia’s Armed Forces.
The Badge …
A statement of your membership of the New South Wales Branch of The Returned and
Services League of Australia and should be worn with pride.
It declares your commitment to render service at all times to your country, your
comrades and The League. It joins you with a time honoured organisation that was
founded by the most revered in our land and it is a privilege to wear this symbol of unity
with the legend of ANZAC.
