March 2015
Pamela’s Pondering
March is here and ushering
in so many new buds and blooms,
along with sniffling and sneezing from
all the pollen! The park in front of City
Hall is abloom in Azaleas and soon Bluebonnets will be waving in the wind in Brenham. With so much spring growth and color bursting forth, doesn’t it put you in the mood for flowers
around the home and in the yard?
Along with the change in the season we have our annual change in SAFD leadership. During this month’s
meeting we will be asking you to vote on our new leadership. We hope to have new faces on our Board and fresh
ideas for next year. Please come to the meeting and add
your vote for the nominees.
Our March 17th meeting features a return designer,
Yoshi Sakamoto, who will be teaching us about the art of
Ikebana. For those of you lucky enough to have signed up
at last month’s meeting, we will be participating in a class
before hand. This class is unfortunately closed now, but I
am sure you will hear rave reviews from the participants
who attend the regular meeting.
We are in the last two months of this SAFD season
but there are plenty of activities going on. Don’t forget
that our last meeting will be our first ever SAFD Cup competition! Members who want to participate will submit
their names, and then each of six
AIFD inductees will draw a
name. Together the AIFD professional and the SAFD member will
create two designs that will be
judged, and a winner chosen. Don’t be timid! I am so excited about competition and I wish
all participants good luck!
Last of all you will hear about
our latest community affairs projects and the upcoming and much
anticipated 2015 SAFD Tabletop Extravaganza. So much to
hear about this which we will cover in the March meeting. Bring your friends and come enjoy all SAFD has to offer.
Like our Facebook page at:

Looking forward to seeing you on March 17th!

Community Affairs
Last Community Affairs Event Planned
The last Community Affairs workshop will be on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 10 am until 12 noon at Christ the Good
Shepard Church on Klein Church Road. This will be a share the love, take and make event. Any member attending will
be able to create a fresh floral arrangement or two to take and give away to any one they wish. You can honor a loved
one, appreciate a teacher, thank a pastor, remember a caregiver … there is no limit to who can be the recipient. I will
pass around a sign up at the March general meeting so I order enough supplies. If you are not able to attend the meeting but still want to attend the workshop email me at [email protected] or call me at 281-731-6825.
It has been an awesome year with many arrangements made for senior centers, foster parents and memory care givers. SAFD has the most talented bunch of ladies around. I thank all of you for showing up in great numbers to the community affairs workshops.

Seeds of Faith
Community Outreach once again helped our local community by providing 24 table centerpieces for the Seeds of Faith Gala, benefitting the Turner Syndrome Community. The
event was held on 2/26/15 in the Woodlands. Fourteen SAFD members met to make the
arrangements. This event was chaired by Debbie McNerney and Dianne Abrahams. The
colors were chosen per the Leaping Butterfly logo, in deep purple, gold and green.
Turner Syndrome is a chromosomal condition that affects more than 1 out of every 2,000 females with such conditions
as:
Short stature Kidney, Thyroid, Liver Issues
Heart Defects Non-verbal Learning Difficulties
Go to www.LeapingButterfly.org for more information.
Debra McNerney and Dianne Abrahams-Chair,
Cissy Antona, Diane Smith, Sharon Cofran,
Sharon Barton, Aida Quesada, Pat Wisniewski,
Lois Maier, Betty Lind, and Pamela LeCompte
donated their time and talent for this Community Outreach project.

Florescence
ILLUSIONS
A Garden Club of America Major Flower Show
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Audrey Jones Beck Building
5601 Main Street
Our last trip of the year is Tuesday April 28, 2015.
We will be leaving Barbara Bush Library at 9:00
AM and return around 4:00 pm. Even though this
trip is two days before our Tabletop Gala, we
have this opportunity to attend Florescence Illusions held by the River Oaks Garden Club at the
Audrey Jones Beck Building at the Museum of Fine
Arts. Not surprising, We have a full bus of 25 people who signed up so there are no seats available
unless someone has to cancel. Please contact me
if you care to be on a list if seats become available. This is open to the public so if any ladies
would care to get together and carpool, we can
meet up there. Lunch is at Cafe Express and not a
scheduled time. That way ladies can eat when
they are hungry. The cost is $10.00 total which
includes two dollars for bus.
Contact Aida Quesada Trip Events 713 530-7767.
What is Florescence?
The purpose of a flower show is threefold: to set standards of artistic and
horticultural excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, floral design, conservation, photography and other related areas; and to share the
beauty of a show with fellow club members and with the public.

The Garden Club of America Flower Show and Judging Guide, 2014 Edition
Florescence is one of the largest competitive national
flower shows sanctioned by the Garden Club of America in the United States, presented by The Garden Club
of Houston, River Oaks Garden Club, and the Museum
of Fine Arts, Houston.
Florescence will showcase floral and horticultural arrangements by garden club experts, renowned floral
and garden designers, Houston, and other noted personalities. Many of these flower arrangements will be
interpretations of masterpieces from the Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston´s permanent collection.

Tabletop Gala 2015
SAFD’s Floral Extravaganza 2015 Tabletop Gala will be held
on Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Shirley Acres, 217 Woerner Road, Houston Texas 77090 (281-444-2582). The following information is offered
regarding your interest or participation in the Tabletop Gala. Please
take a few minutes to read this as it is important and helpful to you
and your guests, and also contains information you need to know and
be aware of.
A title and written description of your tablescape (three to four
lines) is REQUIRED to be submitted via e-mail to Chairman,
Diana Hanley, at [email protected] and President,
Pam Bates, at [email protected] no later than Friday, April
23, 2015. Designers without a written description will have
no commentary in the program. You are welcome to put a
more detailed description of your tablescape on the table.
There will not be any screen projectors this year for viewing
of the tables while dining, and due to time constraints, we
are not planning on individual commentaries.
Each designer receives one complimentary dinner ticket. You will
be seated at your own table, along with any guests you wish
to invite. Guests’ names (and a check for $50.00 per guest)
must be received no no later than April 16, 2015 by the
Ticket Chairman Sharon Cofran, 5618 Willow Walk Lane,
Houston, TX 77069. Sharon's telephone number is (713) 594
-1587. Her email is [email protected]. IMPORTANT:
All tickets must be paid for in advance of the gala. No exceptions will be allowed!!
Set up time for designers is from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. the day of
the event. Set up must be completed by 3:00 P.M. ALL TABLES WILL HAVE A NUMBER ASSIGNED TO THEM, and you
will be provided your table number prior to the event. If you
are not sure of your table number, please find Diana Hanley
or Pam Bates upon your arrival, and we will be happy to help
you. Photographs of each tablescape design will begin
promptly at 3:00 P.M. If you wish to be photographed with
your table, please make sure you are available at this time
when the photographer goes to each table.
No one other than the designers and/or helpers will be allowed in
the main dining area prior to 5:00 P.M. Viewing of tables by
the public will be from 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M., and dinner will
be served promptly at 7:00 P.M. At 6:45 P.M., there will be
an announcement to the designers to “clear your tables” of
personal dishes, silver, glasses, etc., and you will have ten
minutes to put your personal items away to prepare for dinner. WE MUST ADHERE TO THIS TIMELINE due to our commitment to Shirley Acres and its staff. You can store your
items underneath your table for easy access. Please be aware
of your own personal belongings that day.
For people who are not able to go home and get ready and/or
change clothes before the event, you can change your
clothes there. In the past, this has come in very handy for a
few who live too far from Shirley Acres to go home with the
Houston traffic congestion.
Program and Silent Auction/Raffle Rules, and will be directed
into the main dining area for viewing of the silent auction and
raffle items, as well as all of the tablescapes.
There will be a “cash” bar for beer or red/white wine, or sodas
offered for a price yet to be determined, and available from
5:00 P.M. until 6:405 P.M. Please note that tips are greatly
appreciated by the bartender since the “per glass” price does
not include tip.
Guests will be able to view all of the silent auction/raffle items
during the entire evening and will be given a “last call” opportunity to close out their bids before the cut-off deadline of
approximately 8:45 P.M. PLEASE LET YOUR GUESTS KNOW
that if they have bid on an item, they will need to stay until
the winners’ names are announced and monies collected. WE
WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PERSONALLY DELIVER any unclaimed
items after the event. All items must be claimed, taken away,
and paid for on the evening of the event.
PLEASE be considerate of everyone speaking at the podium. Turn
cell phones off or silence them during the event, and show
courtesy when a speaker is making announcements or speaking by not talking loudly at the table. We will make every
effort to not “over extend” our speaking privileges for the
evening, but ask for consideration and courtesy from the
audience so everyone can hear the speaker.
When the event is over for the evening, please make sure you
clear and pack up all of your personal items to take with you.
PLEASE do not leave anything at Shirley Acres. Also, be aware
of your own items. If you do not recognize something as being yours, do not pack it in your things as the owner will most
definitely be searching for it. If you have rented linens from
Elegant Beginnings, please remember to leave them with
your table for pick up.
Attached is a copy of the Tablescape Guidelines. Also, for
your convenience, Jill Vidall of Elegant Beginnings has graciously offered SAFD “Special Offer” pricing for linen rental for each designer
(which includes delivery, set up at each designer’s table, and pickup at
the end of the evening). If you are interested in renting linens from
Elegant Beginnings, please call them at (281) 812-9587, or go on their
website at www.elegantbeginningsinc.com. Of course, you are welcome to use anyone of your choice for linen rental.
If you have any questions regarding your participation and
your design, please call Tabletop Chairman, Diana Hanley, at 832-4653518 after 6 pm ([email protected]) or President, Pam Bates,
at (281) 468-3822 ([email protected]).
Thank you for participating in SAFD’s 2015 Tabletop Gala. We
look forward to your design at our annual fundraiser. Please have fun
and enjoy the evening. We know it will be a “night to remember”!
Please advise your guests to check in at the “sign-in” table AT THE
FRONT ENTRANCE of Shirley Acres. ALL DESIGNERS AND
GUESTS must check in at the front entrance. This is a
“ticketless” event, and all paid for tickets are pre-registered
on a master list and will be checked off upon arrival. Once
your guests have arrived and checked in, they will be given a

Tabletop Gala 2015—Continued
A Night of “Oohs and Aahs”
It is that time of year again to the hear the “oohs and aahs” from our guests at our annual Tabletop Gala.
We will be at Shirley Acres again this year. The date is Thursday, April 30 th starting at 5 p.m. for tablescape
viewing with dinner starting at 6:30. Tickets are $50.00 per guest. Be sure to invite your family and friends to
come see the creativity of our members and floral community. They will walk away inspired to dress up their
tables at home!
You can purchase your tickets at the February and March meeting. If you cannot make it to the meeting, you
can mail your payment to Sharon Cofran, 5618 Willow Walk, Houston, TX 77069. Her phone number is 713594-1587. We can also take credit card payments.
We are still looking for table designers!! Table top designers get their ticket for free. Why not ask another
member or two to help you? It helps with creativity, time and cost and it can be a lot of fun. You could also
sponsor a table and help another designer.
Elegant Beginnings has agreed to be our preferred vendor again. They have set aside Wednesday, March 18 th
and Thursday, March 19 for us to come in and look at their linens and reserve what you may need. You must
call in advance to make an appointment. Their contact info is: Elegant Beginnings, 5226 Atascocita Rd, Humble, TX 77346 281-812-9587, ebincevents.com. They have graciously granted us a 10% discount on your entire order. Please be sure to give them your support. They have a lot of new linens for you to see!
Don’t for get to patronize our wholesalers Taylor, Southern and Pikes Peak. They are a great source for flowers and supplies.
We are collecting items for our raffle and silent auction. Dianne Abrahams has once again agreed to be our
Silent Auction/Raffle chairperson. She will gladly accept your donations or a cash donation to help purchase
items. Maybe you can ask your favorite restaurant, nail salon, retail establishment for a donation. She will
tell you more about this at the February meeting. If you have any questions, you can call her at 713-8181224. Her email is [email protected]
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please give me a call (832-465-3518 after 6 pm). My
email address is [email protected]. I will be happy to answer your questions.
This is our only major fundraiser for the year. Let’s make it a good one!
