Principal’s Message
Mathematics
As you may be aware Mathematics is a focus at
Samson in 2015. Parents can assist your child
by teaching and then practising mental
strategies that enable them to calculate
numbers more efficiently in their head.
Some simple mental strategies are:
 Complements of 10 and /or e.g. 6 + 4,
7 +3, 14 + 6


Skip counting meaning counting by 1s,
5s or 10s. Remember to start children
from different numbers e.g. 380 +10 as
many children are not confident of our
number system beyond 200
Counting On e.g. 16 + 35. Start with the
biggest number being 35 then partition 16
into 10 and 6. Add the 10 to 35 to get 45
and then add the 6 (or 5 to reach the 50
milestone and then 1 more.
Children need strategies often explained and
then an opportunity to practise them. During
preparation of the evening meal can be a good
time. Good luck!
Several parents have asked about the
mathematical language that teachers use to
teach each grade. Mr Wainwright has found a
spread sheet that lists the words used by class
teachers.
In addition he has found an on line Dictionary of
Mathematical terms that students and parents
can use at all levels of their education, primary,
secondary and tertiary. Best of all it is free to
use by anyone for educational purposes. Read
the terms and conditions from the tab. The link
is included below.

On Entry Assessment
Students in years 1, 2 and Pre Primary have
concluded their on entry assessment this week.
We have entered the data into the computer and
will have the Parent Summary Reports ready to
be sent home Wednesday, 25th March.
Duplicate copies will be sent home for each
family that requires a copy for mum and dad.
There are suggestions for activities to help your
child develop further on the back. Students
receive a report for Literacy and Numeracy.
Mathematic problem solving
On Tuesday 17th March,
Samson held Purple Haze
Day to raise funds for the
Starlight Foundation the
Fremantle Dockers visiting
Samson Primary School. All students came to school
dressed in purple or Dockers colours and four Dockers
players visited us, Zac Dawson, Lee Spur, Michael
Barlow and Luke Macpharlin. At lunch the Dockers
players sold purple cupcakes and signed T-shirts,
caps and posters. At the end of the day, the year 6
boys played a special game of football with the
Dockers and the girls watched, cheering them on.
It has been great to see parents at the
workshops this term. We will be running further
workshops next term if you have missed out.
