PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Principal Mr Matt O’Hanlon will be absent from school for the final 5 weeks of term 2 to complete a mandatory
professional development sabbatical as part of his National Partnership contract. I will be acting Principal until
the end of this term until Mr O’Hanlon returns for the start of term 3.
I have just recently returned along with school captain Lycharne Parkinson from a 15 day tour to Gallipoli and the
Western Front, as part of the 2015 Premiers Award commemorating the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing
of Gallipoli. Standing on the shores of ANZAC cove on ANZAC day, both Lycharne and I felt a strong bond to this
land as we both have family who served and fought during the Gallipoli campaign. The ANZAC Award Lead
Chaperone Glen Edwards proudly boasted that Lycharne’s commemoration of two family members, who bravely
fought in the brutal New Zealand battle of Chanuk Bair, was the best soldier commemoration he has ever
witnessed in his extensive background organising ANZAC commemoration events. Amongst 70 of the most
mature and intelligent students representing all of Queensland, Lycharne’s conduct and leadership were
exceptional as she was an outstanding ambassador for all of Beenleigh.

Last week our years 7 & 9 students completed the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests. These tests assess
student performance in both Literacy and Numeracy and were conducted over Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday mornings. This national program provides student performance information to parents and the school
in relation to both our student performance and the group, and adds to the data collected in the year 3 & 5 tests.
Parents will receive a report on their child’s performance in September. Our students completed their tests and
many students felt it went OK. I was very impressed by the overall attitude of the students. The school will report
back to the community when we have our results. A big thank you to Mr Howe and Mr Middleton for their efforts
organizing these tests.
Our sports teams are about to start the winter run and we look forward to many good results and performances.
The summer season was successful for our students and Mr Massey & Mr Smith have both reported to me that
everything went fine. Good work sports people and keep it up!
Can I remind parents that the annual contribution should be paid by now. This money is used for subject
resources and consumables. If you have any problems making payment could you please contact me to arrange
a payment schedule.
We are approaching a stressful time for our students as exams soon dawn upon us. This time is especially
stressful for our seniors. In your discussions with your son/ daughter remind them that plenty of rest, water and a
healthy lifestyle is the best preparation for successful completion of their work.

REGIONAL TITRATION COMPETITION
Winners! Titration Team displays excellence in Regional Titration Competition!
Beenleigh High Team places first in the region for titration! An outstanding achievement.
On Saturday 9th May, 2 teams from Beenleigh High competed at Griffith University, Nathan in the Regional
Titration competition. Students spent 1.5 hours using their titration skills and techniques to determine the
concentration of a solution of acetic acid correct to 4 decimal places. Chief organiser, Associate Professor Chris
Brown made comment on the high accuracy results produced by all 3 team members. When asked about their
winning strategy, all members agreed that it was their teamwork which made the difference. Students worked
collaboratively in teams of 3, to complete the procedure and calculations.

SEP NEWS - BEE HIVES
Starting last year as part of the SEP unit we began to harvest the bee hives and I must admit a few stings later,
the honey extracted is a big hit with the kids in the school who taste it and staff and people who purchase this
nectar from the Gods. Each batch keeps getting better. The next harvest will be in October. At the same time,
students in the SEP unit who wish to learn about beekeeping are helping out with extraction and are enjoying it

NRL TALKS
On Friday the 8th of May were visited by current NRL player Pat O’Hanlon (Bulldogs) and former player and now
NRL Ambassador Tim Auremi. In addition to rugby league coaching and skill sessions, they also spoke with
students about some key issues. For the older students they spoke about the importance developing a
career/education pathway (having ‘Plan A’ and ‘Plan B’). Pat also communicated his passion for reading and
encouraged the kids to read for enjoyment. Thanking you to our special guests for their expertise and coaching.

SPECIAL EDUCATION UNIT LAUNCHES INTO I CAN I WILL
Last week on full school parade, Mrs McNaught and Mr Ricketts got jelly dunked by Conan from the I Can I Will
Foundation in aide of launching the I Can I Will Foundation at Beenleigh SHS.
Conan from I Can I Will spoke on parade and explained why he set up the Foundation. He said that there was a
lack of support for children with special needs from non-authoritative figures. So he got together with other
sports minded people and qualified personal trainers to improving the lives of children with special needs by
acting as 'Mentors' for students in schools on a weekly basis. I Can I Will run health & fitness based programs
completely free of charge on a regular basis to ensure we help every special needs child in need to boost their
self-confidence.They also influence older mainstream students within the schools to join us and become an 'I
Can I Will Mentor', strengthening the unity within the school & bridging the social gap between the mainstream
students and those with special needs.
Many SEP students have signed up to the program and are enjoying the training sessions held every Tuesday.
Soon we will be launching the second phase of the program where mainstream students can sign up to become
mentors. So watch this space….

BRAVE PROGRAM
The University of QLD in collaboration with beyond blue have developed the Brave program, a self-help program
for children aged 8 – 12 years and teens aged 12 – 17years.
It’s an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. The
programs are free, and provide ways for children and teenagers to better cope with their worries. There are also
programs for parents.
This would be a useful resource to share with students and families managing anxiety.

• Parents/Carers please be aware that if your child is absent for any reason you must phone the absentee
line on 34423760. If for some reasons you haven’t contacted the absentee line, a SMS message is
deployed to the 1st contact person from student’s data - please reply. We attempt to do our very best in
communicating with the information we have.
• Many students are using their mobile phones to ring parents to get permission to leave. Unless someone
from the office has actually spoken to the parent/carer, then the student will not be signed out.
• Please understand that during class time it is very difficult to get messages through to students. Please
keep messages to emergencies only. If you need to drop off lunches, money or cooking etc, office staff
will endeavour to locate your child. However sometimes with outside school/classroom activities, this is
not always possible.
• If you wish your child to be signed out, please write a note with student’s name, date, time out and
parent’s or carer’s signature which is to be handed into the office in the morning so passes can be
arranged. Please be aware of school break times.
• Students can be contacted on their mobiles only during the lunch times (listed below).

ROAD SAFETY FOR OUR STUDENTS
Our school based police officer wishes to remind everyone that Alamein Street School Zone has a 40km/h limit
in operation 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm during school term. School grounds are restricted to an advisory 20km/h
limit for student safety.
Students are encouraged to use the school crossing staffed both before and after school situated outside gate 2
(opposite Aldi). Parents/carers are encouraged to remind their children to use this facility and to adhere to
responsible use of skateboards and bicycles when arriving and departing school. Students must wear a bicycle
helmet by law when riding a bicycle and risk personal injury and/or positive police action if they fail to comply.
Again this is paramount for student safety.
Please be extra vigilant for students, on pick up or drop off, and use caution when utilising the school bus zone
or the on-street car park outside the main gates on Savages Parade.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL)
During week 3 & 4 our PBL focus has been WE CARE – Show courtesy and use appropriate language.
It is important that we teach our students how to speak respectfully to others and to mindful of their language.
Our current focus is on reminding students to follow teachers’ instructions in all settings around the school. It is
important that students understand that teachers have students’ wellbeing in mind when requesting them to do
something, whether this be during class time, during breaks or on the sporting field.
Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded PBL certificates. Keep up the great work.

Communication between parents/caregivers and staff is very important to all members of staff at the Beenleigh
High School. We are asking parents/caregivers to provide their email address to the school via the school email
address: [email protected] Teachers want to use this form of communication also for sending
