The school played an important role in providing all of our students with the opportunity to reflect on the 100
yearANZAC milestone. I was able to attend our school’s ANZAC day ceremony on Friday and it was a most
impressive event marked by a high level of commitment from our students to respect the significance of the
ceremony. As a whole, the performance of our students displayed was outstanding. All students were excellent
ambassadors for the school and typified the commitment of our younger generation to acknowledge how grateful
they are for what their forebears have done for them; it is also an acknowledgement of their pride in their country
and Beenleigh in particular. Vinnie Shoesmith played “The Last Post” brilliantly and the choir was excellent. I was
also impressed by the students who participated in the Dawn and Town Service as well as our participants in the
“Dungaree March” prior to the community march. The culture and music groups singing of the New Zealand
national anthem was also very good. A big thank you to all of our students for their efforts, and to the many staff
who supported the various ANZAC activities conducted. See inside for photos.
All of our year 9 students were taken to see the ANZAC play called ‘The First’ written by local playwright Phil
Buttigieg last week at the Crete St Theatre. I was able to go with the students and found the play to be very
good. The students really enjoyed it as well as getting the message. Thank you to Mr Griffin for organizing this
opportunity for students.
Many of our students are excellent school ambassadors. We have recently had students involved in a range of
activities from QUOTA to the ANZAC day parade and we also have a very strong involvement in the Beenleigh
Junior Chamber of Commerce. The students involved are not only learning a range of excellent skills but also
providing a community service. Keep up the good work students!
I was also able to attend our indigenous camp during the last week of term at Stradbroke Island and I thoroughly
enjoyed spending time with the students. The students spent valuable time working and thinking about their
culture. Thank you to Mr Stewart, Ms Little, Mrs Robinson, Ms Turnbull and Mr Little for ferrying me over. The
only dampener on the camp (pardon the pun) was the heavy storm that hit onTuesday night.
Our Cattle Show Team is about to start it’s season of shows soon. The students are very excited as the program
is an excellent learning experience for those interested in the beef industry. We will report results in the
newsletter.
Parents are reminded that the next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 17th May at 5.30pm in the E-learning
centre.

◦ Personal technologies must be turned off and out of sight during assemblies or classes.
◦ Personal technology should only be used in a classroom for learning under the explicit instruction
and direction of a teacher.
◦ Personal technology devices may be used during morning tea and lunch breaks and before and
after school.
◦ Teachers will remove electronica from students if they are not being used appropriately and they
will be returned to students within a reasonable time frame.
◦ Recording of behaviours or incidents such as fighting, pranks or bullying on personal electronica

CROSS COUNTRY
Beenleigh SHS Annual Cross Country was held on Friday 24th April. We were blessed with a sunny day for the
event, and just under 200 students and teachers lined up at the starting line to participate in the race.
After some fierce competition through the school and the footpaths of Eagleby and Beenleigh, our champions
emerged through the gate.
Tori Groves – Little defended her title as overall girl’s champion, but was pushed to the line by Haylee Canavan.
Montel Butterworth, showing that last years’ victory was not a fluke, was the overall boys champion closely
followed by Blade Braithwaite.
Pimpama House continued their domination of school carnivals in 2015 with a comprehensive winning team
performance.

ANZAC
On Anzac day, students from all corners of Queensland are on their way to Anzac Cove to commemorate the
100th anniversary of Gallipoli. Among the representatives is Lycharne Parkinson our school captain, who was a
winner of the 2015 Premier’s Anzac Prize and accompanying her, Mr Bartlett our Deputy Principal.
Anzac Day Speech
World War I, 1914-1918, was the 'Great War', the 'war to end all wars'. In that conflict, the most important
battlegrounds were Gallipoli and the Western Front. Great battles were fought with names that are once again
becoming household words in Australia – the Nek, Lone Pine, Fromelles, the Somme, Bullecourt, Messines,
Passcshendaele and Villers-Bretonneux.
As you gather today to honour our soldiers from such battles, I, along with sixty-nine other students from
Queensland, will be visiting Gallipoli and the Western Front.
We have been given the unique opportunity to represent all Queenslanders at the Anzac Day Dawn Service for
the 100th anniversary and then at the service at Lone Pine. In less than a week we will be travelling to the
Western Front to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate in Belgium and to hold our own service at Villers-Bretonneux in
France.
As we prepare for our pilgrimage to Gallipoli, I think about the Australian soldiers who are buried in the 31
cemeteries on the Gallipoli peninsula and those who have no known grave.

Over the next few days I will walk on Anzac Cove and climb from the beach to the heights at Chunuk Bair. I will
be privileged to spend time in the presence of our countrymen - the men of the Nek, Quinn’s Post, Shrapnel
Valley and Lone Pine.
As dawn breaks on the 25th, we will commemorate that immortal day, 100 years ago; when the young men of
Australia, by their actions and sacrifice, demonstrated that we were truly a nation in our own right. We will
remember the 8709 Australians who died during the campaign.
We will also remember the 295,000 Australians who served on the Western Front and commemorate the 46,000
who were either killed in action or died of their wounds.
We will reflect on the thousands of service men and women who have served their country during war time and
on peace-keeping and humanitarian missions, from the Boer War to Afghanistan.
We will be proud to acknowledge their deeds, which have formed the very identity of our nation. We will dedicate
ourselves to keeping alive the memory of the service-people who did what was asked of them on our behalf –
and to ensuring the ideals for which they so bravely fought for are not forgotten.

GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE - TITANS
CHALLENGE
The U14’s, U16’s and Open Girls League teams competed in the Gold Coast Titans Challenge recently. The girls
played competitively in all games with outstanding sportsmanship all day taking out a several wins against
various Gold Coast schools. Hayley Schipp received overall player of the day for the U14’s age group and Zoe
Te Hau received player of the day for the Opens. During the day, the Australian Rugby League side, the
Jillaroo’s, attended the event to assist the girls during their games and give encouragement and advice. All
students were lucky enough to receive a ticket to the Australia vs Kiwis ANZAC test match. Teachers were very
proud of the way that the students improved throughout the day, showing determination, skill and positive
participation.

RUGBY LEAGUE ACADEMY
Year 10 Rugby League Academy
This year our Year 10 Rugby League squad will be competing in the very elite Broncos Challenge Competition.
This will see our school take on some prestigious rugby league schools such as Redcliffe SHS and St Marys of
Toowoomba to name a few. This competition will be a great learning experience for our boys and they will no

doubt represent the school with passion and sportsmanship. Our next game will be at 4pm on 13th of May, at Bill
Norris Oval. We would love to see some Beenleigh support when we take on Redbank Plains.

Rounds 1 and 2 of the Titan’s Challenged kicked off in the first and second week this term for the Opens rugby
league team (years 11 & 12). Our first game resulted in a 49-10 win over Ormeau Woods. It was a strong
performance by the team beginning the competition in the winner’s circle with strong performances by Montel
Butterworth, Michael Hunkin & Liam Togo. Our second game finished in a 16-16 draw with Aquinas College. The
mighty BSHS Eagles jumped out of the blocks with a 10-nil lead after ten minutes before Aquinas regathered
themselves and fought back in what turned out to be a hard fought contest. Standout players from the game
included Jason Sadler, Dray Ngatuere-Wroe & Tamihana Johnson. After a win and a draw we currently sit in 3rd
place on the ladder with games against St. Michael’s College and Merrimac SHS in the next two weeks. The full

ARTIE NEWS
ARTIE – Achieving Results Through Indigenous Education is back for another term and once again, we have
launched our new challenge to all of the Mibunn Jinndi students at Beenleigh SHS. At our launch special guest,
Australian and Former Origin Great, Scott Prince discussed with students the importance of having positive role
models and the characteristics of a role model. Also, at this event we were able to celebrate student’s success in
the Term 1 Attendance Challenge. In Term 1, students received gold, silver or bronze for their physical
attendance at school. Students receiving gold were rewarded for achieving 90% and above physical attendance
with an ARTIE hoodie and watch. Students, who received silver, received an ARTIE hoodie for achieving 85-90%
physical attendance and bronze students were rewarded with a calculator for achieving 80-85% physical
attendance at school. In term 2, students will again be rewarded with some great rewards. The term 2 ARTIE
Challenge will again reward students based on their physical attendance but in addition also their effort,

Dear Parents/Carers
All students at Beenleigh State High have been invited to participate in BOOK SAFARI – a school wide reading
competition. This is going to be a very exciting competition with loads of fantastic prizes to be won. We are
encouraging all students from Year 7 -12, boys and girls, to get involved in this competition. At Beenleigh SHS
we value the importance of reading and believe this is a lifelong skill that all students need. We would like all
students to give it a go, especially those who don’t like reading or have difficulty reading. We want everyone to
challenge themselves and to get excited about reading.
So what are the fantastic prizes????
• After every student has read 5 books they get to choose a prize from the book safari secret prize box.
They will also go into the draw to win an iPad mini.
• After 10 books they will get another opportunity to choose a prize out of the prize box.
• At the end of the competition – Term 4, the top reader from Year 7 – 12 will each be awarded an iPad
Mini. That’s 7 iPad Mini’s up for grabs!
• There will also be other encouragement awards given out along our Book Safari journey – eg. Top
Reading Care Group.

2. Choose a book from the library or at home and start reading.
3. When you have finished your book, complete one reflection sheet from your booklet, bring the book and
booklet into school and get Mrs Nathan or Miss Fiona to stamp the reflection sheet and add you to the
progress chart.

The teachers, students and administration are very excited for this competition to begin and we hope that from

In term 1 the year 7s were the first to start the new LED sign project in the ITD Department. To complete this
project the students had to use traditional work working techniques, solder a basic electronic circuit (LED lights
and Battery pack that contained a switch) and using Google images, Coral Draw and the laser cutter to etch a
design onto their LED sign.
Please take a minute to look at some of the students completed projects and congratulate them for their term1
efforts.

Year 10 students enjoyed completing their furnishing strand of ITD during this term. Using a range of hand tools,
power tools and jogs, students created some quality projects that they are to be very proud of. Well done year
10!
Some year 10 extension students had the chance to design some metallic fridge magnets using Corel draw and
laser etched/cut them out on the epilog laser.

Sergeant Mark Haestier, the Branch Manager at Beenleigh PCYC, came to Beenleigh SHS on Monday 30th
June to present 'Certificates of Appreciation' to the year 11 and 12 Hospitality/Tourism students that worked
alongside the PCYC in catering for the 'Prawn Day Festival' in mid-March. The students were extremely pleased
with their certificates and letters of recognition. Well done!

HIGH TEA - YEAR 11 & 12 HOSPITALITY
On Friday 27th March, Year 11 and 12 Hospitality prepared and served a magnificent High Tea for the staff of
Beenleigh SHS. Twenty guests were greeted on arrival at the Trade Training Centre, and sat down to platters of
sweet and savoury delicacies which included such items as salmon and cream cheese pinwheels, pumpkin and
feta risotto cakes, banoffee tarts, raspberry white chocolate cheesecake, and layered chocolate and vanilla
mousse. Staff described the day as ‘elegant’ and ‘delicious’ and even suggested having High Tea on a more
regular basis.
A huge thank you to the students, Mrs Te Iwimate, Ms Jolly, Ms Davis and Annette Duffield for all the hard work
that went into organising the event.’

4 REAL MILK EXCURSION
We have all been made aware of the struggles of our local dairy farmers due to droughts, climate change and
explosion of infection and diseases, incursion of Coal Seam Gas into our artesian water that is used for bored
water and supplied to these livestock, and the deregulation of the milk industry resulting in the overseas owned
supermarkets setting low prices for milk causing dairy farmers to leave the industry.
It is with great pleasure that we were able to visit 4 Real Milk a family run dairy farm that produces Holstein
Fresian cows' milk and processes the milk on site for distribution around the Southern South East Queensland
area (including IGA Windaroo). We discovered that the indicative cost of production at the gate was ~ $2.15 per
litre so for every farmer that is producing milk when we agree to pay less than this it forces the milk companies to
offer to farmers less. Do we really want to pay for milk produced elsewhere with no Food Safety rules and
regulations (unlike our own ANZFA guidelines and HACCP controls).
The students watched 4 automatic milkers purchased by G and B Dennis Co Pty Ltd successfully milk the dairy
cows, provide preventative treatments (cleaning and preparing each teat), then monitoring each cows milking, as
well as providing each cow with an incentive (a ration of food supplied specifically for each cow). Tamika Shiel
was very enthusiastic asking many questions about the process and health of the cows. All the students

expressed an interest in the processing and joined in a tasting session after the talk. Tia Gaddes, Jonathon
Roser, Joshua Bond and Michael Atherton were quick to feel the temperature of milk and one comment was
made about why is it so warm and not cold? (They answered that question themselves)
We would like to thank Greg for his informative talk that helped our students learn more about the LELY Robotic
Milking system and how this state of the art technology is changing the face of dairy farming , Rose for explaining
how each of the calves are looked after and grown out in the dairy herd (including the bull calves), and Brenda
for coordinating everything and making the time available to talk about the family involvement and supply of great
Dairy Australia resources for our students.

YEAR 8 ECO-HOUSE EXCURSION
A group of students from the Year 8 Science Academy class recently attended a tour of an Eco-house at Logan
Village. The house was built and is owned by Robert McVicker who is the son of our ASDAN teacher Judy

and electricity. Students learnt how the design and construction of the house was undertaken to maximise
passive solar heating and capture natural breezes. The house won the Sustainable Household Award for the
2013 Logan Eco Awards.

DREAMWORLD PHYSICS EXCURSION
The Year 11 and 12 Physics class went on an excursion to Dreamworld as part of their current physics unit on
motion and forces. During the excursion students collect a range of motion data using accelerometers and
completed a workbook on the physics of amusement park rides.

YEAR 12 ANATOMY LABORATORY VISIT
A group of year 12 Biology students recently visited the Griffith University anatomy laboratories as part of their
current unit on human body systems. Prior to the session students donned medical gowns and gloves for the
sterile laboratory environment and learnt about the body bequest program. While there they and had access to
the anatomy models and human body specimens used for anatomy teaching.

BRAVE PROGRAM
The University of QLD in collaboration with beyond blue have developed the Brave program, a self-help program
for children aged 8 – 12 years and teens aged 12 – 17years.
It’s an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. The
programs are free, and provide ways for children and teenagers to better cope with their worries. There are also
programs for parents.
This would be a useful resource to share with students and families managing anxiety.

• Parents/Carers please be aware that if your child is absent for any reason you must phone the absentee
line on 34423760. If for some reasons you haven’t contacted the absentee line, a SMS message is
deployed to the 1st contact person from student’s data - please reply. We attempt to do our very best in
communicating with the information we have.
• Many students are using their mobile phones to ring parents to get permission to leave. Unless someone
from the office has actually spoken to the parent/carer, then the student will not be signed out.
• Please understand that during class time it is very difficult to get messages through to students. Please
keep messages to emergencies only. If you need to drop off lunches, money or cooking etc, office staff
will endeavour to locate your child. However sometimes with outside school/classroom activities, this is
not always possible.
• If you wish your child to be signed out, please write a note with student’s name, date, time out and
parent’s or carer’s signature which is to be handed into the office in the morning so passes can be
arranged. Please be aware of school break times.
• Students can be contacted on their mobiles only during the lunch times (listed below).
A reminder that mobile phones must be turned off during class times.

ROAD SAFETY FOR OUR STUDENTS
Our school based police officer wishes to remind everyone that Alamein Street School Zone has a 40km/h limit
in operation 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm during school term. School grounds are restricted to an advisory 20km/h
limit for student safety.
Students are encouraged to use the school crossing staffed both before and after school situated outside gate 2
(opposite Aldi). Parents/carers are encouraged to remind their children to use this facility and to adhere to
responsible use of skateboards and bicycles when arriving and departing school. Students must wear a bicycle
helmet by law when riding a bicycle and risk personal injury and/or positive police action if they fail to comply.
Again this is paramount for student safety.

Please be extra vigilant for students, on pick up or drop off, and use caution when utilising the school bus zone
or the on-street car park outside the main gates on Savages Parade.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL)
Welcome back to term 2.
During week 1 our PBL focus was WE ARE RESPONSIBLE – Participate positively and listen attentively. It was
so wonderful to see students achieve this during the ANZAC DAY services at school and also the ANZAC
celebrations in the community.

During Week 2 our PBL focus is WE ACHIEVE – Always aiming higher. It was a timely reminder to focus on
school work and to strive to do our best.
During week 3 & 4 our PBL focus will be WE CARE – Show courtesy and use appropriate language.
It is important to remind our students to be mindful of their choice of language both in and out of the classroom.
Let’s keep our language respectful at all times and remember to use our manners.

AURASMA AT BEENLEIGH STATE HIGH SCHOOL
This year as a way to get our students and parents working with new technologies we have been busy creating
some magnets which are being handed out with this addition of the newsletter. On this magnet there are two
interactive icons. The first is a QR code and when you use any QR reader app you will find some instructions
about how to access our Aurasma channel. This is a free augmented reality app which we are using more and
more of throughout 2015. We are encouraging the students within their lessons to create their own videos to
engage with our displays within the school grounds. The second icon on the magnet can be scanned using
Aurasma and will direct you to the latest addition of the newsletter. Therefore you can keep it on the fridge and
always have access to the latest news from our wonderful school.

Communication between parents/caregivers and staff is very important to all members of staff at the Beenleigh
High School. We are asking parents/caregivers to provide their email address to the school via the school email
address: [email protected] Teachers want to use this form of communication also for sending
student assessment and progress throughout the year. The school newsletter is also sent via email on a
fortnightly basis. In using email we are all also helping our environment with less paper being used in printing of
the school newsletter.
