GOTCHAS
Our school continues to reward positive behaviours with Gotchas. Overall this
new reward system has seen some real improvements in the behaviour of our
students! Most outstanding over the last two weeks has been the improvement
in the areas of RESPECT – students showed great respect for the year 3 and
year 5 students by moving quietly around the school during NAPLAN; and
SAFETY – teachers have reported that fewer students are running on the
bitumen. Well done BSS!!
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our year 3 and year 5 students and their teachers for
their positive attitude towards NAPLAN this week.
I asked a few of our students what they thought of the tests and here are
some of their responses.
NAPLAN was fun. I liked the writing the persuasive writing. I chose
dance. (Mikayla 5A1)
Some parts were challenging but some parts were easier than some (Charlotte 5A1)
It was exciting. It was something we could be happy to do because it was just like a normal test!
(Zac 5A1)
I thought it was pretty good because when you get your results, you can see your mistakes and try
and conquer them for year 7. (Caleb 5A1)
It was pretty easy at the start, the end was a little bit harder. 5A1 was glad the writing was
persuasive because we like writing persuasive texts and we know about persuasive writing and
wrote one about chocolate! (Riley 5A1)
Great fun! Made my hand sore. We learnt about storms in the story at the end. (Taleisha 3F1)
It was fun and tiring! I learnt how slippers were made. (Cooper 3R2)
I think it was really hard but some questions were easy. I learnt to practice some questions and to
try hard. (Stevie 3R1)
I liked it- it was really good! I didn’t learn too much because it was pretty easy  (Sophie 3R1)
It was good – it was quite exciting actually! I liked doing the reading and the language
conventions. (Asli 3R1)
It seems that they are not too stressed by the tests, which is exactly what we wanted!
Early entry to Prep
We have started to take prep enrolments for 2016. It is pleasing to see so many coming in and
especially pleasing to hear that the enrolling parents have heard such
positive things about our school!

We have had a few enquiries about early entry. Education Queensland policy clearly states that:
Children who are younger than the prescribed age for Prep may be enrolled in Prep if:

they turn 5 years by 31 July in the year of proposed attendance; and

The principal is satisfied the child is ready for education in Prep, having regard to their
attributes (including ability, aptitude, social and emotional competence, physical development,
and level of knowledge and understanding).
Not all children who turn 5 years of age in July will be eligible for early entry to Prep. The
child must also be considered by the principal to be ready for education.
To determine readiness for early entry there is a process that must be followed. Your child will
need to participate in developmental assessments with our school Guidance Officer. You will also
need to fill out additional paperwork and attach a letter from your child’s pre-prep provider outlining
their support for the early entry with regards to the areas listed above.
More information is available on the department’s website:
http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/school-operations/early-delayed-entry-prep.html
A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who help us here at Boondall State School.
You are TRULY appreciated 

Volunteer Afternoon Tea
Thank you so much to all the volunteers who
came along to our afternoon tea last Thursday.
It was a lovely afternoon made even more
special by having both Junior and Senior
Choirs perform for us. It was a pleasure to be
able to make a coffee or tea for the people who
volunteer their time to make Boondall SS a
better place.
If you weren’t able to make it, on behalf of
everyone here at Boondall SS, I would like to
thank you for taking the time to support our students and staff. I hope you have found it to be a
rewarding experience and that you continue to be an active member of the school community.
I would also like to thank Miss Chan for preparing the choirs so well for their performance. It was
great practise for their competitions this week.
Classroom Visits
I have had a great time visiting the classes and looking at what the students are learning. It has
been a lot of fun down in Prep travelling all over the world and eating exotic foods with their friend
The Grug. The artwork has been outstanding. I have also been looking through student books and
observing the progress they are making in their writing. If you get a chance, pop on in to take a

look at your child’s work for yourself. Students can gain a lot of confidence through reflecting on
their past learning and how they have progressed. There are many students in our school who
should be proud of the progress they are making in their academic journey. Sharing that success
with others makes the journey more enjoyable.

Music Matters
Band at QYMA
Mr Van and myself are so incredibly proud of our School Band. They sounded fantastic at QYMA
last Monday and received a Silver Award for their efforts. It was the best performance I have heard
from them since my arrival in 2014. Thank-you for the support we had from families of the students
that performed.

Choirs at QYMA
On Wednesday Night Junior Choir are performing at Albany Creek State HIGH School and on
Friday Night the Senior Choir are performing at The Gap State High School. Students are to wear
their school polo shirt with their school pants/skirts. They did a great job last Thursday at the
Volunteer Afternoon Tea and I know they will do another wonderful job this week. It puts the
biggest smile on my face to hear them improve in confidence each time they perform.
New Band Members
This term a few of our Year 4 & 5 students joined the School Band (and even performed at QYMA).
I want to take a moment to congratulate Robert Svenson, Macayla Deckers, Antonio Monteclaro,
Matthew Ranger, Jada Rose Niu, Bailey Todd and Phoebe Morley on their continued efforts on a
very new instrument - keep up the good work! In addition to this, after discussions with Mr Van and
Mr Simpson more students started Band this week. We would like to welcome Kiera Hill, Abbey
Riley, Lilli Turner, Megan Calimbayan, Zoe Kan, Taralainah Lupematasila, Riley Barratt, Zac
Lawrence, Mikayla Harvey and Hannah Phillips to the School Band. We hope you enjoyed your
first rehearsal this week.
Keep making music

Lote
On Monday May 18, at 5pm, the annual Language Perfect Competition began. The competition
will run until the 28 of May. Last year we were so excited to have won the German section
between all schools, primary, secondary, public and private. Even though this year, we will not
have our Year 7s to help us, I am counting on our younger students to get us over the finishing
line!
This is a great opportunity for students to learn extra vocabulary and reinforce their German
already learnt in class. It also gives students from all year levels the opportunity to see how well
they are doing individually, as a class, and how well we do in German at Boondall State School.
The other wonderful benefit this year is that the Language Perfect team will donate $1 for every
3,000 points students score, and donate it to the Nepal Earthquake relief fund. What an
exceptional, humanitarian extra incentive for students to do their best for this year’s competition.
Good luck to all, watch this space for results!
POSTSCRIPT: At 5.09pm yesterday (just 9 minutes after the competition opened) we had 41
Boondall Students online competing. An outstanding start to the competition. Keep up the
great work.
Viel Glück

May 27 is National Simultaneous Storytime -an important annual campaign that aims to
encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year it is
an event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book
that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National
Curriculum for Grades P to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework.
This year’s book is The Brothers Quibble by Aaron Blabey, which I will be sharing with classes
P-6 over the next two weeks. I have registered Boondall State School for this event. Registration
enables access to digital presentations of the book from Monday 25 – Friday 29 May. In the past,
the digital presentations have included an AUSLAN (sign language) interpretation of the story,
which has been both fascinating and very entertaining.

District Cross Country
On Friday May 8, the Boondall State School cross country team finally (after two washed out days)
ran in the Bramble Bay District Cross Country trials at St Pauls School. This was the culmination
of many weeks of training for these students, with the last few being very disjointed by holidays,
wet weather and scheduling changes.
Despite this, our students produced whole – hearted efforts on the day. Although some of our
team placed in the top twenty, (some races had more than a hundred competitors), no runner
qualified for the district team this year. Congratulations and thank you to all of our competitors, you
represented our school with pride.

National collection of data on Students with a Disibility
Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education
authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as
students without disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on
school students with disability.
In 2013, 10% of Queensland state schools participated in the first year of implementation. In
2014, two thirds of Queensland schools will participate and all schools will collect data from 2015.
Our school will be involved in the nationally consistent collection of data from this year.
Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that
can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported
nationally is the:
 number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a
disability;
 level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
 broad category of disability.
Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are
aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to
consult with you.
While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you
do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let the school know.
Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:
 Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html
 Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationallyconsistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to
contact the school.
