Over the last couple of weeks I have had the privilege of watching our choir students compete in QYMA. I was so proud of them - not just because of the way they sang but because of the way they conducted themselves as audience members! As you know we have Rules of the Week which align with RISE and we have spoken at length about “using audience etiquette”. It seems that the students have really listened and enacted this as they far outshine the other schools in attendance. Congratulations BSS students – keep it up. (Miss Chan’s article will let you know the results of the competition) Prep Reading Night As part of our ongoing commitment to involve parents in their child’s schooling, we are again running an information session on reading for prep parents. This session will help you to understand the reading process, what to do with “take home readers” and also give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about reading. Whilst this session is mainly aimed at Prep parents, if you think it would be helpful to you please feel free to come along. 3 Boondall School Newsletter No.9 Term 2 2015 Absence From Wednesday the 10th June to Friday the 19th June I will be absent from the school as I commence my long service leave. In my absence Chris Hart will be the principal. I will see you all in the last week of term. Kim McNamara Principal From the Deputy Principal Desks NAIDOC Week We will be celebrating NAIDOC Week on Wednesday of Week 1 of Term 3 and it promises to be a special event. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations is: We all Stand on Sacred Ground : Learn, Respect and Celebrate During Week 2 of Term 3, we will be having a special guest in our school. Renowned indigenous author and artist, Gregg Dreise will be visiting to speak about his book, “Silly Birds”, a morality tale that focuses on surrounding yourself with good people. A qualified teacher, Gregg will be working with every class in the school. Children will also be able to have the chance to purchase his books (he has recently published another book, “Kookoo Kookaburra”) and have him autograph them when he arrives. This promises to be an exciting week at Boondall State School. Active School Travel Our next Walking Wheeling Wednesday will take place on Wed 24 June (Week 10). We had an excellent turnout at last term’s day and I am sure we will have just as many, if not more students participating this term. Stay tuned for further details. Get Active For Your Chance to Win! If your child/children walk, ride or scooter to school regularly, make sure they have an Active School Travel Passport as they get stamped every week. All students participating in the program will go in the draw to win a Mad Gear Pro Scooter valued at $150. It is an awesome prize (I took it down to the skate park last week to test it out - It is great for doing back flips). If your child doesn’t have a passport, they can collect one from the office if they ask nicely. Greg McCallum Master Teacher Music Matters QYMA: We received Silver Awards for Junior Choir, Senior Choir and School Band in QYMA this year. It was great to see how they have improved since last year's QYMA. Thankyou to all the parents and carers who took the time to bring their children to Albany Creek, Ferny Grove & The Gap. A special mention to the families who had children in all three ensembles and enjoyed 3 nights out in 2 weeks. If you have any photos which you'd be happy for the school to use, please email them to myself or to the School for archiving. Last week the students in Band and Choir had a celebratory party for all their good work leading up to QYMA. Thank you to the P & C and Tuckshop for the extra goodies you provided. We had a lot of well deserved fun. Band Blitz: Just a reminder that Band Blitz is next week at Bald Hills SS and that parents are to drop off and pick up their children from the venue. Registration has closed so no new registrations can be made. Wavell Instrumental Camp: Students in Year Six have been invited to attend a Music Camp on Tuesday the 23rd of June. We are sorry that this clashes with the Athletics Carnival, but as it is organised by two separate schools, it was unavoidable. These forms are due back on the 15th of June. Keep making music Rebecca Chan Music Co-Ordinator 5 Boondall School Newsletter No.9 Term 2 2015 High School Enrolment Packs We have enrolment packs for Sandgate District State High School, Bracken Ridge State High School & Wavell State High School at the school office. If you need information on these schools please pop in and collect a pack. Lote Perfect results for Language Perfect! From May 18 to May 28 students from our school competed in The International Language Perfect competition, and what an exciting competition it was! Children were online before school, during both breaks, and at home until all hours. I was checking constantly, as we were in some real tussles with some enormous High Schools throughout the world. Last year we came first in Queensland for all schools in German with 71,000 points. This year we came second with a massive total of 141,810 points. This just goes to show how far reaching this competition has become. Just look at some of the schools we beat, all of them being High Schools. So to say that I am proud of these young Boondall students, is a wild understatement. During the competition our students answered 474,690 questions!! In 3,024 hours online!! The list of award winners follows, but we benefitted from every child from the 4 Preps who earn us 10 points to our 6 Gold medallists. The extra benefit for those “golden” children, is that in their honour Education Perfect donated money for the Nepalese Earthquake relief. So a great success for all concerned. The awards will be presented at school assembly as soon as they arrive. Danke Kinder you have been so fascinating to watch and blossom on the international stage. Well Done!
