We had well over one hundred students and more than a dozen staff members marching which was a school record. I think I must have been the proudest principal in Bramble Bay! School Wide Positive Behaviour As you know from previous newsletter articles and school assemblies, this year we are continuing to focus on improving student behaviour at the school. We are doing this through our School Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPBS) work which includes consistently having easy to remember school rules (RISE), setting expectations and rewarding positive behaviours (Gotchas and awards). Every classroom / working space in the school (even the Tuckshop and First Aid Room) has a poster of rules based on RISE, so that students know what is expected of them in these areas. Part of our SWPBS process is looking at our behaviour data. Our data indicates that we are taking a firm stance on behaviour at our school. Students who are not acting according to our RISE values are having the appropriate consequence. Prep 2016 A reminder that we are now taking Prep enrolments for next year. Please make sure you fill out an enrolment form ASAP and let your neighbours and friends know that enrolments are now open. Date claimers: Parent Information Session – 6:00pm Wednesday 26 August (in the school hall) Prep Orientation Mornings – 9:00 – 10:00am 14 October & 24 November Attendance I wrote in a recent newsletter about how much learning time is lost when students are continually late to school or absent. Whilst there has been some improvement, we can still do better! Please minimise the number of interruptions your child has from their education. NB – Advanced notice for those planning overseas Christmas holidays your child MUST be back from the vacation by the first day of school which is the 25 January, 2016. NAPLAN A reminder that the Year 3 and the Year 5 students have their NAPLAN tests next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We ask that you ensure they have a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and arrive on time so that they feel in their best frame of mind on these days. 4 Boondall School Newsletter No.7 Term 2 2015 From the Deputy Principal Desks ANZAC Day March What a tremendous turnout we had at the ANZAC Day march from Sandgate RSL! We targeted 100 students for 100 years and we had at least 109 students (those Preppies were hard to count as there were so many), 10 staff members and many, many parents and friends. I can’t thank you all enough and it was a very proud moment for our whole school. We also had students marching for other organisations such as scouts and I also noted other students with their families in the crowd. A day like this shows the spirit that we have in our school and I am certainly very happy to be a part of it. A big thank you to Trevor Jarvis, Steph Morley and Sandy Jarvis for their efforts in coordinating our march. While I’m handing out thankyous, I would just like to say well done to Chris Hart for organising the ANZAC Day service at school. It was a very emotional day and I did see tears flowing freely on more than one person. I actually had dust in my eyes. Lost Property With the cooler weather approaching, many students are starting to wear jumpers to school. Can you please ensure they are named? It is a good time to check that all of your student’s belongings are labelled in particular their hats. Goal Setting We are well into the new term and it is exciting to see the learning that is taking place in the classrooms. You have all had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher. The next step is to sit with your child and set some goals for the remainder of the semester based on this meeting. If you have not met with your child’s teacher, it is not too late. Please contact the office or email the teacher so we can arrange a suitable time. A healthy, proactive relationship between the teacher, parent and student is so important to each child’s development. Michael Drake Deputy Principal Learning Experiences As we rapidly head toward the middle of Term 2, NAPLAN and the assessment period before the June / July holidays it is a great time to reflect on some of the fantastic learning opportunities that our students have had beyond the classroom. Last week I was fortunate enough to spend some time visiting the ‘StarLab’ with Year 5 students. To connect with their unit of work on the Solar System students were able to enter an inflatable planetarium. The quality of presentation was outstanding and our students were left literally speechless by what they saw. Earlier in the year I accompanied the Year 6 students as they participated in the Kokoda Challenge at Mt Coot-tha. Students worked in teams throughout the day to complete various challenges as well as the climb up Mt Coot-tha in adverse conditions. It was an excellent day and I could see the students learning a great deal about themselves and their team mates as the day went on. Our Year 6 students are also going to Sandgate State High School today for an 5 Boondall School Newsletter No.7 Term 2 2015 ‘Immersion Day’ and Wavell State High School tomorrow Wednesday the 6 May to see the musical production ‘The Wiz’. All in all these experiences are geared towards helping our students to connect their learning with the real world and reflect the belief that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It is great to see our teachers planning and implementing such wonderful experiences and even better to see our students benefitting from them. Chris Hart Deputy Principal Music Matters QYMA QYMA is a series of Music events for school ensembles. Keep making music Rebecca Chan Music Co-Ordinator LOTE (German) Ach du lieber!! On Wednesday April 29, we had our first ever meeting of the Boondall German club! I was worried that I would be sitting in the flexible learning area all by myself, but as you can see, it was a roaring success. Children did activities on Languages Online on the computers, and Language Perfect on the IPads. We listened to some German music and ended up with that all important German favourite the Chicken Dance! Thank you to all the Preps Yrs 1, 2 and 3s who came. I stopped counting at 100! I can’t wait for next week. Aufwiedersehen Frau Vlaisa 6 Boondall School Newsletter No.7 Term 2 2015 Sport Fun Run News Last Friday on parade we presented our Fun Run prizes. The highest fundraiser in the school was Lily Roozen from PD1 who raised $318.50. For that fantastic effort she won a bike! The top fundraising class was PD1. PD1 will now win a class party catered by our hard- working tuckshop ladies. There were also 10 random draw winners who won a $30 gift card and every child who raised over $10 won a high bounce hand ball. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank our P and C for their efforts in running the Fun Run this year. In particular, Mrs Suzanne Lawrence, Mrs Jo Harvey and Mr Charles Morley greatly contributed their time and effort which led to the success of the fund raiser. All proceeds go to towards supporting the Boondall State School sports program from which all Boondall State School children will benefit. Finally, we would like to acknowledge Angela from Ray White Real Estate for her very generous donation of the bike.
