COMMUNITY JUSTICE DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR
Term Position until March 31, 2016
SCO FIRST NATIONS’ JUSTICE STRATEGY
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is seeking an experienced, conscientious and
highly motivated individual to coordinate the SCO First Nations’ Justice Strategy. The
strategy as mandated by the leadership is a community based initiative which seeks to
assist communities in reclaiming jurisdiction over justice. The objectives of the initiative
is to establish a First Nation system of criminal justice and dispute resolution to address
the issues, priorities, needs and right of way of First Nation communities.
STATEMENT OF JOB
The Community Justice Development Coordinator (CJDC) will implement the objectives
of the initiative by working with Community Justice Workers (CJWs). This will involve
coordinating the activities, training and reporting requirements of the Community Justice
Workers (CJW’s) and their assigned First Nations. This will include participation and
active involvement in the administration and advocacy in areas of policing, public
complaints, community justice services, gang prevention, restorative justice practices,
mediation, and policy development.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:











An undergraduate degree consisting of studies in the area of criminal law or
justice or an equivalent combination of experience and education in the justice
field.
Experience working in the area of probation services, community based justice
programs, court services and public administration;
Experience in research and analysis;
Experience in project management;
Knowledge of federal, provincial and local laws relating to criminal justice;
Knowledge of overall issues and concerns affecting First nations peoples,
including Aboriginal/policing issues;
Excellent computer skills, proven experience with word processing, spreadsheet,
database, presentation and publishing software in a Microsoft environment;
Effective writing and oral skills;
Must have ability to provide culturally appropriate advocacy, education and
facilitation to the community concerning justice issues and concerns;
Willingness to travel; and
Possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s License and have access to reliable
transportation.
