Thursday 2 April 2015 End of First Term As I stood watching the Preps enjoy their first school disco it was hard to believe that just nine weeks ago these same children arrived at Coolum School. What a DIFFERENCE! All the school camps went out and experienced excellent weather conditions – even those that left in the rain. Our sporting teams are up and running, cross country practice has started in earnest, cheer squad, rock bands and choirs are all selected and even the eisteddfod try outs are sorted. All the assessment for term one is complete and teachers are finishing their marking. All our students have settled in and made head roads into their 2015 learning journey. What a fabulous start to the 2015 school year – it’s time for well-earned break! On behalf of all the staff here at Coolum State School I wish you all a relaxing and happy holiday- stay safe and we’ll see you next term. School resumes on Monday 20 April (Please note there is no public holiday for ANZAC day in 2015). (Linda Morse) Hat Parade The annual Hat parade was held in the Multi-Purpose hall today. Prep and Year 1 parents attended as their children amazed us with their amazing hats and creative design flair. Student designs captured our imagination. My surprise hat was very beautiful indeed. Prep H students excited about the Hat Parade KEEP OUR SCHOOL SAFE! With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime in our school. If you see anything suspicious, please call School Watch on 13 17 88. The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education, Training and Employment, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools. If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter. Keep the number handy— 13 17 88 —and let’s work together to help create a safer school community. Let’s keep our school safe! (Ross Naumann) Disco Dancers It was great to see so many of our students (811 attended the four discos over 2 nights) sharing a fun filled night with their mates on the dance floor and sharing a slice of pizza and a juice. The children were wonderfully well behaved. Parents were prompt on pick up and a fabulous time was had by all. A super special THANK YOU to our staff who gave up their time to supervise and share an evening with our students. (Linda Morse) NAPLAN A reminder that NAPLAN testing is scheduled for the 12-14 May inclusive. You may be interested in the http://www.nap.edu.au/ website for more information. (Linda Morse) News from 4P Well this term has come to an end, and the students in 4P have reflected upon some of the fun and challenging activities they completed. Here are some of their responses: At camp I really enjoyed the giant swing because we went really high. Hannah I really enjoyed camp, spending time with friends and all the fun activities like canoeing and archery but I really just love learning. Makala I really enjoyed doing school work with my friends because it makes you get smarter and helps you learn. Levi I loved archery because I shot the moving target. Kyle I liked math because I learnt my 9 times and my 11 times tables to help get me get a great job later in life. Kianni I really enjoyed the giant swing at camp because I was scared at first but I conquered my fear of heights. Isaac I got to the top of the giant swing! Reilly In Term 1 I liked hanging out with my friends Hayden, Max, Ollie and Mr Porter and I loved making yummy ice-cream. Adrian I enjoyed school when we made ice-cream because everyone was shaking their bags with ice in it. It was so funny because we were jumping around everywhere shaking the bag. Maddy At camp I enjoyed all the activities because the teachers helped us to learn new things. Zara I loved the giant swing and canoeing because on the giant swing you feel a rush of excitement. Kiala Have a safe and happy holiday everyone, from 4P! Year 4 Camp Last week Year 4 Camp at Mapleton was awesome. Students participated in a variety of activities, with Giant Swing, Archery, Canoeing and Bush Skills being some of the favourites. Students had a great time learning about the bush and cooking damper over a fire they helped build, as well as working as part of a team to pull students to the top of the Giant Swing before counting down their friends for a drop which had many students screaming in delight. Many thanks to parents and teachers who gave their time to help out to create a wonderful Camp experience. (Mark Kerr - Year 4 Camp Coordinator) Year 6 Camp Let the outdoors be yours. This is the motto of Tullebudgera Beach School and last week the Year 6 students certainly found this to be true. After an early start on Monday morning we arrived at camp pumped. A quick introduction, something to eat and straight into our first activity. The activities that we participated in throughout the week included surf skills and boogie boarding, hiking, tandem biking, sailing and I think it is safe to say that the tobogganing was a camp favourite. As well as these awesome activities we reflected on working well within a group and co-operating using persistence, resilience, confidence, organisation and getting along. I am sure all Year 6 students will be applying these skills both at home and at school. (Dan Stanieg) Coolum AllStarz Cheer Squad Congratulations to all students that auditioned for the Coolum AllStarz cheer squad for 2015. Cross Country Students have been busy preparing for our annual Cross Country event to be held on the 1st May. Students should continue to keep active over the Easter break. Training could consist of and is not limited to * Running for 15 – 20 min * Sprint from one light pole to the next and then jog to the next etc. * Go bushwalking and run for a small part of it * Pretend to be a lifesaver and run from the top of the beach into the water and back again Any activity that gets the heart rate up and you are breathing harder than usual. District AFL Three boys from Coolum attended a very wet and cold first day of the Regional AFL trials yesterday (Wednesday). All three boys (Tanner 6M, Cian 6S and Lachlan 5H) played very well within a very competitive Noosa Team.
