NEWSLETTER https://dalbsoutss.eq.edu.au Term 2 Week 2 2015 Dear Parents and Friends Nice to see a little bit of rain falling today and with any luck we might see a bit more rain across our district before the week is out. Enough rain to be meaningful would be the way to go, though we don’t need the sort of rain that they are talking in and around the south east corner over the next few days. This week our focus for PB4L is: Reviewing our bully proofing procedure. On Monday our finely tuned netball players headed off to Toowoomba for the Darling Downs trials as part of the mighty Bunya team. Seven students from Bunya made it into the possible and probables teams which was a wonderful effort. No students from our school made it into the Darling Downs team though each of them did their very best, learnt heaps and enjoyed the experience. Mrs Herbert and Miss Batts were the super coaches and they did an extraordinary job. It is great to have staff willing to get involved in these sorts of activities. This week in PB4L,we have been reviewing our Bully Proofing steps of “STOP, WALK, TALK” with particular emphasis on making sure that if another student tells you to “STOP” that regardless of whether students think that they have done anything wrong or not they stop, walk away and have a nice day. Following through with this will help with any misunderstandings and ensure that each and every student has a great day! While still talking sport our congratulations must also go to Blayden Dodd who made it to the possible and probables stage of the Darling Downs Rugby League trials. Once again at this level the competition is very fierce to earn places on the team. We are very proud of the way Blayden represented our school at this event. Once again our school community rallied to take part in the most important Anzac day March. We clearly had the largest contingent of students, staff and parents marching together that we have ever had. It is very pleasing to have this sort of support to honour the efforts of Australian service men and women both past and present. Our School Captains also took part in the special ceremony at the old Dalby Cemetery where two WW1 war grave memorials were unveiled. The old Dalby Cemetery contains an enormous amount of Dalby History and it is good to see this history being preserved for future generations. Finally a reminder to ensure that dogs are not to be allowed to enter the school grounds even if they are on a lead. The exception to this is of course any person with a vision impairment. These pets even though they are friendly can cause issues for some of our smaller students and of course on occasions they leave some “gifts” in and around the school. Til next week Dave, Lyn, Kate & Joel WINTER UNIFORM With the cooler weather coming on we wish to thank parents who have been ensuring that students have Dalby South jumpers and tracksuits. Tracksuit pants should be plain black with no brand markings. Tracksuit tops are either our Dalby South taslon track top (bottle green with white piping and black insert) or plain bottle green track tops or vests. No hoodies thanks. Please note that tights and jeans are not a part of our uniform. Plain black tights may be worn under shorts, skorts, or skirts on cooler days. Students may also wear either white, black or bottle green skivvy under Dalby South shirts. If you are looking for second hand winter uniforms, our P&C uniform shop has some. This shop is open each Wednesday morning before school 8:00-8:55am and is situated between the tuckshop and A block. We would appreciate your help in making sure that Dalby South is a uniform school throughout the winter months. Owen St Dalby Q 4405. PH: 4672388 HOMESTYLE BAKE ORDER FORMS WERE SENT HOME LAST WEEK. We would especially like to thank Joe and Suanne Santsingh, Peta Batts, Ally and Joel Mc Caskie. A massive thankyou to our Sponsors, Teachers, Parents, Volunteers and the wider school community for their on going support. We would also like to thank the students who performed and were junior caterers. Their enthusiasm and efforts were outstanding in the lead up to event and during the dinner. It was a pleasure to put on such a successful night that resulted in over $10,000 being raised for the Year 5&6 students to put towards their trip to Canberra later in the year. Please accept this as our personal thanks. Jenelle Ashelford and Kylie Phipps. Suanne Santsingh Teacher | Librarian Wonder of Science 2015 Dalby South SS Year 6 students are once again participating in the Wonder of Science Program. Last year our Year 6 students competed against other schools in our District at a Science Conference in Chinchilla. This year they are once again competing against schools however the Science Conference will be held in Dalby. In conjunction with the Science unit of work this term on the structure of the Earth and earthquakes, teams of students are required to design and build a seismometer. Their seismometer must be a working model. Teams also need to explain how their model works and its purpose. The Wonder of Science Program runs out of QUT in conjunction with working scientists who travel out to schools and work with students providing guidance with their project. Our first visit from our scientist, Prabha Jones, was on Tuesday this week. Prabha worked with each Year 6 class on a background lesson on the structure of the Earth and how earthquakes are caused. Funky Chicken Time at Dalby South Author, Chris Collin, paid us a visit this week. Students had a funky time reading "The Funky Chicken" and "A Bug Called Doug"; acting out the play; chatting to puppets; or participating in the writing workshop. The Pyjama Party for Prep and Year 1 on Tuesday evening was a huge success with quite a few students from Dalby State School joining us as well. It was great to see quite a few parents and teachers there in their PJs however, nothing topped Ms Downes' panda slippers or Mrs Kummerow’s very cute pink puppy slippers. We were even allowed a sneak preview of Chris’s new book, “Chooks in Space”, which was very popular and is now highly anticipated. A great time was had by one and all!
