How to use the Research Online Author Badge
The Research Online Author Badge is a tool to enable you to share your publications from
Research Online with your academic peers and colleagues. This guide provides instructions on
adding the badge to your online presence or email signature. Please note that a number of
popular social media sites are limited in the content users can add to their profiles. Alist of sites
that do not currently support the Badge is provided at the end of these guidelines.

How does the badge work?
The Research Online Author Badge tool queries the RO search function using a proximity
indicator to ensure your search results listing accurately reflects your publication list in RO.
When you use the badge form to create a badge, a piece of code is created that can be inserted
into html within a webpage, creating a ‘badge’ to promote access to your publications.
The code will continually push queries to the RO search box. Therefore, the code can be
considered a permanent link to your publications in RO.

Adding a badge
1. Within the UOW website (CMS)
Note: To do this you will need to have a profile page within the UOW CMS.

Create your badge using the RO Author Badge tool:

Copy the code from the text box.

You can add the code to your profile page within the CMS if you have access rights to
edit CMS webpages, otherwise your Faculty’s CMS Site Manager will need to add the
code for you to your online profile.

Identify the page you wish to add the code to.

Log in to the CMS in order to edit content.

Paste the code into the place that you wish the badge to appear. If your CMS Site
Manager is editing the page for you, you may need to forward the code in an email to
them with instructions on where to place the badge code.

If you do not know who your Faculty ’s CMS site manager is, contact your Faculty
Administration Office.
2. Within your blog

Create the badge using the RO Author Badge tool:

Test the button to ensure it will retrieve your publication results

Copy the code from the text box

Open your blogging website

When creating or editing a post or other field in your blog (such as About yourself), drop
the code into the html editor text box.

Save and Preview the page. Click on the embedded button to ensure it retrieves your
publication results in RO.
Adding a text link
You may wish to use a text link instead of a badge. A text link is also generated when you create
a badge. The text link can be included in an email, a Word doc, other text document, or even a
webpage. To add a text link:

Enter your details into the RO Author Badge tool:

A text link will be generated and made available below the Badge.

To grab the hyperlinked text, highlight (or select) the whole text as shown below. Right
click on the highlighted text, and choose Copy.

Identify the place in your document or email where you want the text to go, and choose
Paste (Ctrl + v) to insert your text link.
Your text link will appear like this and will link to your publications in Research Online:
