WASTE REDUCTION
WA S T E R E D U C T I O N
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!
Recycling alone cannot be the answer. We
need to reduce the amount of garbage
created in the first place.
Use a reusable water bottle.
Drink tap water instead of bottled water.
Finding tap water on the go is easy with
Tap Map: download the free app from itunes.
Use reusable containers or old
margarine/yogurt containers to
pack your lunch.
As consumers, we can significantly influence
manufacturers and suppliers through the
purchasing choices we make.

longer lasting products.
š Purchase items with
less packaging.
š Avoid single-serving
products; buy in bulk.

For apartment, condo, or townhouse residents who want to compost, worm composting
may be an option. Vegetable and fruit scraps are quickly turned into a great plant
and garden fertilizer. Worm composters are compact and can be stored on a balcony
(seasonal temperatures permitting) or under the sink.
Worm Composting Kits are available at a subsidized
cost of $30 for Township residents only.
Call 604.532.3544 or email [email protected].
The kit includes:

š compost bin

š workshop (mandatory; one hour)

Rather than placing grass and leaves out for municipal Green Can
collection, use them to condition your lawn and help conserve water.
To grasscycle, leave a thin layer of grass clippings on your lawn after
mowing or mulching (chopped up; some lawn mowers have a mulching
option); the decomposing matter returns nutrients back into your yard.
Pile grass and leaves around tree bases and in the garden to slow water
evaporation and help control temperature change.
Grass and leaves can also be composted in a backyard composter.
Composting can cut the
amount of generated
garbage by 30-50% while
producing free and natural
garden fertilizer.

WASTE REDUCTION
FO OD WA S T E R E D U C T I O N
Did you know almost half the food produced in the world is wasted? A lot of food is discarded
while being processed, transported, in supermarkets, and in kitchens. The average household
throws out 215 kg (475 lbs) of food each year - approximately $600 worth.
FOLLOW THESE 10 EASY TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR FOOD WASTE:
1. WRITE A GROCERY LIST AND STICK TO IT.
Write down staple items that are running low; plan your
meals in advance so you don’t forget anything at the store.
2. BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED.
3. SHOP IN YOUR PANTRY. Delay a grocery store trip
by eating food already in your home - this is a good way
to finish up older canned goods or mystery meats lurking
in the back of your freezer.
4. MAKE BROTH; impress your friends with homemade
soup. One - add vegetable trimmings (including peels and
carrot tops) and leftover meat (bones and all) in a soup pot
with water and seasoning. Two - simmer. Three - strain.
Bon Appétit!
5. GROW YOUR OWN. About half of global food
waste occurs before it even reaches your home
(during shipping, retailing, etc.). By growing your
own food, you can reduce waste and share extras
with neighbours. Plus, it is nearly
early free!
6. USE UP LEFTOVERS.
7. ROTATE ITEMS in the fridgee
and in your pantry. Put the newest
items in the back, and eat the older food first while
it’s still fresh and delicious.
8. TRY CANNING. Remember those canned peaches
and jams grandma used to make? Learn how to do it
yourself! The Township offers canning workshops.
Visit tol.ca/events.
9. FREEZE. You’d be surprised at the types of foods
that freeze well. Try toasting bread from the freezer.
10. COMPOST THE REST. Get your green on by putting
vegetable and fruit scraps in the compost or add leftover
food to your Green Can. Composting helps save landfill
space and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

EVERY DROP MAKES A DIFFERENCE!
Every drop makes a difference! It is very important
you properly dispose of used oil and oil products to
protect our environment. Let's strive for 100% used
oil recycling!
HOW TO RECYCLE
OIL PRODUCTS:
WHAT HAPPENS
TO USED OIL?
š Used oil is re-refined into new
lubricating oil and processed for
use as a fuel in pulp mills, cement
plants, and asphalt plants.
š Oil filters are crushed and taken
to a steel mill to manufacture
reinforcing steel.
š Plastic oil containers are recycled
into new oil containers, drainage
tiles, and parking curbs.

WHERE TO TAKE IT
ANIMAL/PET WASTE
Pet waste is not accepted in household garbage due to
public health concerns.
Other options:
1. ANIMAL WASTE PICK UP SERVICE: Private
companies collect animal waste for proper disposal
(generally at a treatment facility). Fees apply.
2. COMPOSTING DOG WASTE: City Farmer has a
guide for those wanting to compost their pet waste.
cityfarmer.org/petwaste.html
3. TRENCHING: Dig a small trench in the backyard.
Place animal waste in trench, dust with limestone,
and cover with dirt. This process allows waste to
decompose naturally.
Wondering what to do with
your dog's waste?
A doggie composter is ideal,
and it's easy to make your own.
Visit cityfarmer.org/petwaste.html
4. TOILET: Dog waste can be flushed down the toilet.
Regular kitty litter cannot go down the drain. As an
alternative, purchase flushable cat litter.
CO OK IN G O IL
Currently, there is no collection program for used cooking oil, grease, or fat for residents.
Most businesses using deep fryers have a collection system in place to trap used oil,
grease, or fat.
Restaurants that have fat or grease traps in place will sometimes accept residential
amounts for drop-off. Residents can contact local restaurants about depositing their
material into the restaurant collection bin (usually located outside).
If a resident does not wish to take their material to a local restaurant, they can freeze the
fat/grease in a sealed container and place it in their garbage on the day of pick up.
Another option is to absorb the grease with absorbent material such as saw dust; allow
materials with grease to dry; and then triple bag and place into regular garbage. Smaller
amounts can be absorbed in paper towel and placed in the Green Can (page 15).

PROGRAMS
WHERE TO TAKE IT
P R OD U C T CA R E
A S S O C IAT I O N
Product Care collects and manages
leftover program products to keep them
out of landfills and waterways.
PAINT EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Leftover paint collected at paint depots is offered
free of charge to anyone.
Anyone wishing to obtain leftover paint should call
the Recycling Hotline at 604.732.9253 or visit
productcare.org for the nearest location.
Product Care
Association
604.732.9253
productcare.org
If you have leftover paint, share it with friends or
neighbours. If it can’t be used, dispose of it responsibly
at an appropriate Product Care depot; see page 45.
Since the eco fee paid upon purchase funds the
stewardship program, there is no cost to consumers
to drop off products at collection facilities.
PAINT TIPS
When starting a new painting project,
remember the
BUD RULE:
š BUY no more paint than you need. Ask your
paint retailer to help estimate how much paint
your project will require. Not only will this
save you money, but it reduces the likelihood
of leftover paint at the end of your project.
š USE all the paint you buy.
š DISPOSE of leftover paint safely.
