April 6, 2008 1000 Michigan Ave., Marysville 364-4100 This Sunday’s Reading How To See by Fr. Art Baranowski Easter day has been over for 2 weeks. But, the Easter Season is going on for 7 weeks. Easter Day can be a high—new clothes, flowers, candies, family dinners. The Easter Season is just life back to the ordinary. But, it is in this ordinary life where Easter happens. The basic belief we have as Catholics is that the Holy Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is given to us. The Spirit is operating in us, directing us, teaching us to see everything the right way. The way the Spirit is directing and teaching is much different than the way the culture directs and teaches. You simply have to question the values and assumptions of the culture or the Holy Spirit cannot move you. Paige Shortal is a mother of 3 grown sons. When she asked her oldest son if he learned anything at all from growing up Catholic, he said this “Fr. K’s homilies taught me to evaluate the culture.” Mrs. Shortal has the following reflection. “Our church and our church schools should help us identify the gods of this culture and to recognize when—and how much—we are being asked to sacrifice to them. We can do this only if we know our God by name, if we call on that name and talk to God every day, if we teach our children to pray and to listen to the voice of God within them. And we must be just as careful to avoid embracing these false gods, especially the sneaky, apparently innocent ones like the building project or the football team or any number of causes that threaten to assume first place in our hearts. We must be careful because children learn much more from what we do than what we say. Isn’t this why so many—young and not so young—are no longer attracted to our church’s gatherings, inspired by our leaders’ words, impressed by the font of wisdom to which we have access? It is not enough to hear the words—not enough for any of us. (Continued on page 2) Luke 24, 13-35 Luke’s community had to recognize Christ in the same ways we do—in our gathering together as church, in the word of Scripture interpreted for us, and in the Eucharist. But, each of us has to recognize Christ—learn to see him. 1. Who has been at your side, for at least part of your life, to help you see things with faith? 2. How do the Scripture readings become more than just words for you? What helps? 3. How does the Eucharist each week give life and energy to the people of the parish? What are the limitations in yourself that keep Christ from being more real? (Continued from page 1) We must see people living out the message. I am truly grateful for the models of faith and good works who have wandered through my life and lives of our children.” Pay attention to the Spirit of God that is within you. Learn how to listen and be directed by that Spirit. Let the Church and its teachers teach you. And, continue to see differently from how the culture sees. Let’s Talk … Family Planning As the snow disappears, thoughts of spring, nature, and getting in shape for summer become important. Did you know that what we do to our bodies can affect our fertility? Women having difficulty getting pregnant find that too much body fat, as well as too little body fat, can result in an inability to have a baby. Natural family planning teaches how various other things can also affect our fertility. To learn more, check out our web page at www.nfponline.org or call 313-237-4679.
