ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN II
(Accountant)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs highly complex (senior-level) technical accounting support work. Work involves performing
detailed assignments recording, classifying, examining and verifying financial records, documents and
reports. Work involves performing extensive data entry and filing. Reports to the Accounting Manager
and works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for use of initiative and independent
judgment.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Classifies, codes, posts and balances financial accounting documents and records.

Performs extensive data entry with accuracy.

Performs routine accounting and clerical tasks with accuracy.

Computes, analyzes, prepares and processes purchase and travel vouchers.

Reconciles accounts and bank statements or appropriation balances.

Researches, analyzes and coordinates payment discrepancies.

Assists with tracking invoices to ensure payments are made in a timely manner.

Scans and indexes accounting documents.

Files and maintains all accounting records in a filing system.

Performs related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
 Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
 Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
 Two years of accounting or financial operations experience is required. (See substitution
below.)
PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:
 College major coursework in business, accounting, finance, economics or related field
preferred.
 Experience with state government accounting is preferred.
 Experience using Microsoft applications to include Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred.
SUBSTITUTION:
 Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in
finance or accounting may substitute for required experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
 generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
Skill in:
 using effective written and verbal communication; and
 conveying information in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to:
 review work for accuracy;
 accurately perform numerical detailed work;
 make mathematical computations;
 prepare financial and accounting documents;
 communicate effectively;
 sit and operate a personal computer for long periods; and
 lift up to 25 pounds.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
Work is typically performed in a sedentary office setting, spending more than 70% of the time sitting at
a desk performing data entry on a personal computer.
