FEATURE PRESENTATION • Gr.1 CRITERIUM de SAINT CLOUD
EPIC PROPORTIONS
Making all on his racecourse bow over a mile at
Longchamp at the start of September and in the
G3 Prix de Conde over nine furlongs back there
Oct. 19, Khalid Abdullah=s Epicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB})
proved again that he is a hard horse to keep tabs on
when justifying 9-10 favoritism in the G1 Criterium de
Saint-Cloud. Sizeable and
blessed with a generous
stride, the homebred had
dominated the Conde after
being left to his own devices
in front and was again
allowed a pressure-free lead
under Thierry Thulliez here
with the re-opposing runnerup from that contest Big
Epicuris
Scoop Dyga
Blue (GB) (Galileo {Ire})
keeping closer attendance
this time. No drama threatened until the field
straightened for home, where the sextet fanned out as
usual in search for a quicker strip of turf. Thulliez kept
the bay three-wide from the hedge on the stand=s side
and his mount was given some light flicks to secure the
comfortable 2 1/2-length success from the German
raider Palang (Hat Trick {Jpn}), who edged out Big Blue
by a head for third. Cont. p3
A SATURDAY SURGE IN MEDIAN, AVERAGE
by Lucas Marquardt
The magic number at Keeneland November Saturday?
$230,000. That was the high-water mark achieved by
not one but four co-session toppers during the opening
of the marathon sale=s Book 3. The quartet included a
weanling colt from the first crop of GISW Bodemeister
(Empire Maker), as well as mares by Cherokee Run,
Touch Gold and Smart Strike. In truth, though, the
numbers that caught the most attention were those
that reflected the positive gains in average and median
yesterday. During a lively session of trading, 257
horses sold for $15,538,500. The resulting average of
$60,461 was up 18% from a year ago, when the
session average was $51,240. Cont. p12
TERRAVISTA CROWNED IN DARLEY CLASSIC
The G1 Darley Classic on the final day of the
Melbourne Cup Carnival yesterday was billed as a
showdown between the best sprinters Australia and
Europe had to
offer, with the
likes of fourtime Group 1
winner Lankan
Rupee (Aus)
(Redoute=s
Choice {Aus})
and this year=s
G1 Diamond
Jubilee and
G1 July Cup
Terravista
winner Slade
Racing and Sports
Power (Ire)
(Dutch Art
{GB}) set to lock horns in a mouth-watering clash. In
the end, it was Australia that claimed the trophy in the
prestigious sprint, but honors went to Terravista (Aus)
(Captain Rio {GB}), who overhauled Lankan Rupee
inside the final 100 meters and held off a late charge
from favored Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta de Lago
{Aus}). Terravista settled near the rear of the compact
field while Lankan Rupee and Buffering (Aus) (Mossman
{Aus}) led the way early, with Slade Power moving up
to race on their heels on the inside rail after missing the
break by a length. Cont. p4

AThis is a lovely colt who hasn=t stopped improving
from race to race,@ trainer Criquette Head-Maarek
commented. AHe showed he can handle much softer
conditions here also, which is the sign of a good horse.
He likes to use his stride and settles very well in front.
We=ll put him away for the year now and we hope we
have a nice prospect for either the G1 Prix du Jockey
Club or G1 Epsom Derby.@

Lankan Rupee, already under a vigorous ride from
Chad Schofield, picked up the lead approaching the
200-meter mark as Terravista weaved his way between
rivals. He hit the lead at the 50-meter mark and
comfortably held off Chautauqua, who got up to be
second. "I've known all along that this is the best horse
that I've ever trained and I've been pretty bullish about
him, so it was great to see him pull it off today,"
winning trainer Joe Pride told Racing and Sports. "I
don't want to compare great moments but that was
fantastic. Watching that race as it unfolded was so
exciting."

Darley Classic cont.
This time last year, the lightly raced Terravista was
amidst a three-race win streak at the benchmark level
at Randwick in Sydney. He finished second in his
stakes debut in his sixth start in Rosehill=s Listed
Festival S. Nov. 30, and returned with a first black-type
victory in Randwick=s 1200-meter G3 Southern Cross
S. Feb. 22. He garnered a second group win next out in
the G3 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm Mar. 8, and
wrapped up his autumn campaign after finishing 11th in
the G1 George Ryder S. over 1500 meters Mar. 29.
Terravista opened his 5-year-old account with another
group-race double, taking the G3 Show County Quality
S. at Randwick Aug. 23 and following up in the G2 The
Shorts S. over the same course a month later. Shipping
to Melbourne for the first time for the G1 Manikato S.
Oct. 24, Terravista was described by his trainer as Athe
world=s best sprinter@ before that 1200-meter event,
but he wound up a luckless fifth behind Lankan Rupee.
While he likely has a way to go to justify his trainer=s
lofty opinion, Terravista was no doubt the best up the
Flemington straight yesterday, and Pride told Racing
and Sports he would choose the gelding=s future targets
carefully. "I've got to consider prize money with a
horse like this," the conditioner said. "He's done a
pretty good job today and won a pretty decent check.
We could possibly come back here for the [G1]
Newmarket [H.], but the Sydney autumn holds some
nice riches for him as well."
Winning rider Hugh Bowman added his vote of
confidence. "I didn't expect to be that far back but I've
got confidence in Joe and I know the horse and I was
happy ride him where comfortable," the jockey told
Racing and Sports. "He was smoking and all he needed
was a run and he didn't need much room. He's up there
with best sprinters I've ridden, most of which have
been younger horses, but he's the best weight-for-age
sprinter I've been on."
Slade Power pulled up lame after failing to land a
blow, and trainer Eddie Lynam said the injury is likely a
pulled muscle.
"It's a hard day, but these things happen and we've
been well looked after since we arrived here,@ Lynam
said. AWe gave it a go--nothing ventured, nothing
gained.@
Slade Power=s participation was cast into doubt the
week before the race when it appeared that he may not
be able to be loaded into the starting gates last, as has
become his custom in Europe. In the end, Lynam and
the officials were able to reach a compromise.
"He went into the stalls third last,@ the trainer
explained. AWe were happy with that and there were no
problems on that score, but unfortunately he's come
back lame. It's his last run and he'll be going to
Darley's Kildangan Stud in Ireland. I hope he recovers
quickly and has a great career as a stallion."

EMIRATES TROPHY TO ADELAIDE
The Adelaide-based Hucklebuck (Aus) (Elvstroem
{Aus}) capped a perfect three-for-three campaign with
a maiden Group 1 victory in yesterday=s Emirates S.,
one of Australia=s most prestigious mile contests and
the co-feature of the final day of the Melbourne Cup
Carnival. Hucklebuck settled fifth on the rail down the
backstretch, about five
lengths off the lead set
by the popular
Tasmanian raider The
Cleaner (Aus) (Savoire
Vivre {GB}). Switching
off the fence as the
field began to descend
on The Cleaner
rounding the bend,
Hucklebuck
Hucklebuck found an
Racing and Sports
opening while three
wide at the top of the lane. Drawing even with the
frontrunner under minimal urging passing the 300-meter
mark, Hucklebuck had to call on his reserves to put The
Cleaner away, and then had to fend off a late challenge
from Lucky Hussler (Aus) (Husson {Arg}). "That was
terrific,@ remarked winning jockey Dom Tourneur, who
was recording his first Victorian Group 1. AThere were a
lot of doubters at the trip, but he came out and showed
them what he's made of. Today the real Hucklebuck
shone through."

Kicking off his career in his native South Australia
this time last year, Hucklebuck went two straight there
before embarking on a Victorian experiment. That
journey ended successfully with a listed victory at
Caulfield last October and a second in the G3 Carbine
Club S. over this track and trip two weeks later. Kicking
off his autumn campaign with a handicap win back
home at Morphettville, Hucklebuck returned to
Melbourne to garner the G3 C S Hayes S. over
1400 meters here Feb. 15 prior to an eighth-place finish
over this course and distance in the G1 Australian
Guineas Mar. 1. A Queensland winter campaign
included a fourth-place finish in the G3 Fred Best
Classic May 17, and a sixth in the G1 Stradbroke H.
June 7. Hucklebuck returned from a freshening to take
the Listed Durbridge S. at Morphettville Oct. 18 and,
after adding the G3 Yellowglen S. over 1400 meters
here Nov. 1, was ready to dispel doubters of his
abilities over the Flemington mile yesterday. Thomas Li,
Chief Executive Officer of the Macau Jockey Club and
owner of Hucklebuck, was on hand to enjoy the
victory. "I thought the last 200 meters was very
exciting," Li told Racing and Sports. Trainer Phillip
Stokes, who won three races on the card, added, "This
means so much. It's fantastic to have Thomas here and
to get a Group 1 in Melbourne is a big thrill."

The third time was the charm. Third in the 2012

the 8-5 chalk in this race last year to get the money
here. A close second in Keeneland=s GIII Bewitch S.
Apr. 24, the 2012 GP de Clairefontaine heroine rang up
a career high in Delaware=s GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial

last time Aug. 31. She settled kindly while saving
ground in third throughout after breaking from the
fence here. Loaded for bear entering the far turn while
awating racing room, she split horses beneath John
Velazquez in the stretch and came through a narrow
opening along the inside to nail the favorite in the
shadow of the wire. "She went a bit off form last time,
otherwise she's always been a nice filly,@ trainer
Christophe Clement said. AWe've tried to win the Long
Island with her for a few years; it's wonderful she's
done it this year. She's going to go back to Europe and
become a broodmare now. The trip [John Velazquez]
gave her was between superb and unbelievable; that's
what you call saving ground." Velazquez added, AThere
were only two speed horses, and I [thought I'd] come
out of there and get it the way I wanted, try to sit and
wait, and that's the way it worked out. I had to bide
my time inside the quarter-pole, but at the
three-sixteenth pole she came running. I wanted to
make sure I had room. Once I cleared the horse inside
[me], and I pulled her out, she was running really good,
and I said 'I'm going to get there.'"

be back even better next year." Leparoux added, AWe
had a great trip. He broke well and put me in the race
very nicely. All I had to do was get around two horses
when we entered the turn and he did that and finished
out strong. He always kind of breaks okay, but always
breaks a little bit further back and it's hard for him to

HUGHES, HANNON CROWNED CHAMPIONS
Jockey Richard Hughes was officially crowned
Britain=s champion jockey for the third successive year
yesterday at Doncaster, while his retainer, Richard
Hannon, earned a first champion trainer title in his
debut year as head trainer.
Hughes endured a delayed start to his European
campaign this year after being injured in Dubai on the
Mar. 29 World Cup Card, but he gradually reeled in the
front-running Ryan
Moore throughout the
year. Hughes=
championship treble
was sealed when Moore
opted to bypass the end
of the British season in
favor of overseas
targets. Group 1
victories for Hughes this
year included the G1
Queen Anne S. at Royal
Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes Ascot with Toronado
Racing Post
(Ire) (High Chaparral
{Ire}), the G1 Cheveley
Park S. with Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), and the
G1 King=s Stand S. and G1 Nunthorpe S. with Sole
Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}). The former pair are trained
by Hannon.
"It's been a long year, hard work but it's paid off,@
Hughes said. "I wouldn't ride winners if it wasn't for
Richard Hannon. It was a seamless transition to Richard
Jr. It's great to be part of it and I wish him all the luck
in the future. I have to approach next year as I have
this. I need to get motivated. I'll be going to Dubai for a
spell in February."
Hannon added, "It's been a great year and we have a
lot of good horses to look forward to as well. We've
had Olympic Glory and Toronado, who both won Group
1s this year. The regret, or the disappointing bit of the
season, was we never got Sky Lantern back to what
she was. She was a very special filly to me and I was a
big part of her build-up. We've got a lot of good horses
such as Ivawood and Estidhkaar and others for next
year."
Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum was Britain=s leading
owner. Counted amongst his highlights was Taghrooda
(GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire})=s G1 Investec Oaks and G1
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. wins, and
Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal)=s G1 Coral-Eclipse victory.
"
"
KINGMAN TO COVER TAGHROODA
This year=s four-time Group 1-winning miler Kingman
(GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has been chosen as the first
mate for Sheikh Hamdan=s Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the
Stars {Ire}), heroine of this year=s G1 Investec Oaks and
G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., according
to Racing Post. Both 3-yearolds, Kingman and
Taghrooda were
stablemates at trainer John
Gosden=s Clarehaven
Stables. A homebred for
Khalid Abdullah=s
Juddmonte Farms, Kingman
suffered his lone defeat
Taghrooda
when second in the G1
Racing Post
2000 Guineas, then
subsequently collected the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, G1
St James=s Palace S., G1 Sussex S. and G1 Prix
Jacques le Marois. Taghrooda, meanwhile, in addition
to her Oaks and King George victories, finished second
in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and third in the G1 Prix de
l=Arc de Triomphe. "The decision of which mare visits
which stallion is the result of a great deal of research
and homework behind the scenes," Shadwell director
Richard Lancaster told Racing Post. "The final decision
is always Sheikh Hamdan's and he has very definite
ideas about which crosses he would like to try,
especially when it comes to using first season sires. To
that end, we will also be supporting Mukhadram in his
first season with a good number of our own mares."

While the colt established the $230,000 mark, three
others would later match it.
They included the Bluewater Sales-consigned Divine
Dispatch (Touch Gold), a full-sister to GISW Composure
and GSW Ready Set who was offered in foal to the redhot freshman Super Saver as Hip 1407. Gainesway
purchased the 5-year-old mare, whose first foal is a
Divine Park weanling filly.
Also hitting the $230,000 level was Sweetest Sound
(Smart Strike), a 5-year-old mare selling late in the day
through Lane=s End as Hip 1670. Whisper Hill Farm=s
Mandy Pope, sitting by herself in the pavilion, won out
for the unraced full to MGSP Saint Vigeur and half to
GSP Sweet Bliss (Street Cry {Ire}). Sweetest Sound,
selling in foal to Twirling Candy, was produced by a
three-parts sister to champion juvenile Sweet Catomine
(Storm Cat) and the GI Breeders= Cup Ladies= Classic
winner Life is Sweet (Storm Cat). Lane=s End sold her
for the connections of those top racefillies, Pam and
Marty Wygod.
Filling out the $230,000 club was that mare who
sold in foal to Bodemeister, Cherokee Jewel (Cherokee
Run), who was hammered down to WinStar for
$230,000, and who has given her connections a
lucrative run of late.
Like Divine Dispatch, Cherokee Jewel was sold by
Meg Levy=s Bluewater Farm, going through the ring as
Hip 1369. It was Meg=s husband Mike Levy who
purchased Cherokee Jewel, in foal to Speightstown, for
$75,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale. Mike
was acting on behalf of Mike Moreno=s Southern Equine
Stable, which, just before the GI Kentucky Derby in
2012, had bought into Bodemeister. As Bodemeister
prepared to head to the breeding shed that fall, Mike
Levy and Mike Moreno purchased about 10 mares to
support the young stallion, including Cherokee Jewel.
It didn=t take Moreno long to get into the black on the
mare. The foal Cherokee Jewel was carrying was
Bayerd, who sold for $135,000 at the 2013 FasigTipton October Sale, and who this year has been very
good for trainer Steve Asmussen. Bayerd broke his
maiden at Saratoga by 11 1/2 lengths in August, then
shipped to win the Kip Deville S. at Remington Sept.
28. On Friday night, he ran second at odds-on in the
Clever Trevor S. at Remington. Cont. p14
TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 11/9/14 • PAGE 14 of 18 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
That helped the chances of a Speightstown full-sister
to Bayerd who was offered by Bluewater at the
October Sale just a few weeks ago. That yearling filly,
already named Speightstastic, was hammered down to
Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch for $160,000.
Yesterday=s sale of Cherokee Jewel concluded
Moreno=s run with the mare, who helped generate
$525,000 in gross auction revenue for her connections,
including her own sale and the sale of her two
Speightstown yearlings.
Keeneland November resumes today at 10:00 a.m.
and runs through Friday, Nov. 14. For more, visit

Bodemeister Colt Tops Weanlings...
This past summer, the principals at WinStar Farm
traveled around and inspected weanlings from the first
crop of their Empire Maker stallion Bodemeister. Farm
CEO Elliott Walden and his team were rightly
impressed, but noted that
most breeders of
Bodemeister=s best
representatives were waiting
to sell at next year=s yearling
sales.
AI=d said of the top 30 we
ranked, most or all were
going to be sold as yearlings
because they were so nice,@
Elliott Walden
said Walden.
Keeneland Photo
So Walden decided to
send through some of
WinStar=s best Bodemeister foals at the November
sales, Aso that people knew what kind of stock he was
getting,@ he explained.
It was mission accomplished during yesterday=s fifth
session at November, where a WinStar-bred colt from
the farm=s Grade I-winning mare Awesome Humor
(Distorted Humor) brought $230,000 to lead all
weanlings and co-top the session. Taylor Made
consigned the colt as Hip 1327.
AHe was just a really good colt,@ he said. AI didn=t
really want to part with him because I thought he=d
make a good yearling. He was one of our best foals.@
The colt is one of 18 Bodemeister foals to sell at
Keeneland so far. The group has averaged $122,167
off Bodemeister=s introductory fee of $30,000.
It=s interesting to note Bodemeister=s median is even
higher--$132,500--which is sometime of a rarity and
typically indicates across-the-board quality.
AHe=s getting good, athletic types that have a really
good look to them,@ said Walden. AThey=re wellbalanced, have good movement, have a sharp color-they look like classy horses.@
Walden said another good WinStar-bred
representation of Bodemeister goes through the ring
today as Hip 1939. Craig and Holly Bandoroff=s Denali
Stud consigns the son of the GII Adirondack S. third
Magic Appeal (Successful Appeal), a full-sister to the
Grade I-winning juvenile J P=s Gusto.
AWe put them on separate days because we expected
them to sell well and we wanted people to showcase
them,@ said Walden.
Campaigned by Zayat Stables and later with partner
Mike Moreno, Bodemeister roared into the 2012 Triple
Crown picture under the tutelage of trainer Bob Baffert.
He dominated stablemate Secret Circle (Eddington) by 9
1/2 lengths in the GI Arkansas Derby in his fourth
career start, and later ran one of the better losing races
in GI Kentucky Derby history. In the Derby, he sprinted
through :45 1/5 and 1:09 4/5 fractions before being
overhauled by I=ll Have Another (Flower Alley) late. He
also finished second to that foe in the GI Preakness S.
before sustaining a career-ending shoulder injury.
AWe=ve bred about 10 mares a year to him, and are
just very high on his chances,@ said Walden. AI think it=s
interesting to note that the right people are buying
them: Chris Baccari, Gerry Dilger bought the one today,
Debby Oxley, Mike McMahon. Some really good judges
of horses are buying
them.@
It=s safe to say that
Bodemeister hasn=t been
hurt by the success of his
barnmate at WinStar,
Pioneerof the Nile, who
shares a similar profile:
by Empire Maker, owned
by Zayat Stables, trained
by Baffert, ran second in
Bodemeister
the Derby, etc.
Benoit Photo
Pioneerof the Nile is
the sire of five first-crop stakes winners, including the
graded winners Cairo Prince, JoJo Warrior, Midnight
Storm and Vinceremos, as well as this year=s standout
juvenile American Pharaoh.
AI think it definitely helps,@ said Walden. APioneerof
the Nile is obviously his own stallion, and the bottom
side of their pedigrees are different, but any time you
have a son come out and do what he has for Empire
Maker, it certainly helps his other sons.@ Cont. p15

The two stallions previously stood in the same
general range at WinStar--Bodemeister stood the 2014
season for $30,000, Pioneerof the Nile for $20,000-but due to the latter=s success, WinStar boosted his
2015 to $60,000.
AWe just couldn=t be happier with the year Pioneerof
the Nile=s had,@ said Walden. AComing into this year he
had Cairo Prince, and since he=s just had horse after
horse pop up. Maybe the best one was the horse who
didn=t win a graded stakes--Social Inclusion--who beat
Honor Code and finished third in the GI Preakness. Even
though we did raise his stud fee rather aggressively,
we=re going to limit his book to 120 mares, and the
breeder response has been great. So we feel like we
priced him fairly.@
Walden also provided an update on WinStar=s newest
addition, the treble Grade II winner Fed Biz (Giant=s
Causeway), who was retired yesterday to the farm at a
fee of $12,500.
AWe=re just real excited about him,@ said Walden.
AHe=s a horse that reminds me of Distorted Humor when
we got him. They=re both multiple graded winners who,
while they didn=t win Grade I=s, had Grade I talent. Both
are track-record setters at seven furlongs, and as a
$950,000 yearling, Fed Biz is a beautiful horse. We
think he has a chance to be here for a long time.@
Maryland-bred Tapizar Colt Goes for $190,000...
The Maryland-based breeder David Moose has done
well since purchasing the mare Strict Access (Mr.
Greeley) for $29,500 out of Fasig-Tipton=s Midlantic
December Sale in 2012. First, he sold the Tizway filly
she was carrying at last year=s Keeneland November
Sale for $50,000. Then he returned yesterday to
November to sell the mare=s latest foal, a Maryland-bred
colt by Tapizar (Tapit), for $190,0000. Gerry Dilger
purchased the colt under the Lakeview Stables banner.
It was the second-highest price for a foal sold during
Saturday=s session.
Moose, who bred the colt with his wife and with
Finale Farm, offered the horse through the consignment
of David and JoAnn Hayden=s Dark Hollow Farm. The
chestnut sold as Hip 1666.
A[David]=s got a farm about four miles from our farm
in Maryland,@ explained David Hayden. AWe suggest the
matings, he raises the weanlings, and then we sell
them for him. I think we=ve been selling for him for the
last four or five years. We had a More Than Ready
weanling filly sell here a few years ago for $200,000,
so we=ve gotten lucky together a few times.@
Moose operates a landscaping contracting business in
Maryland.
Strict Access is a winning half-sister to MSW Access
to Charlie (Indian Charlie) from the SW Media Access
(Devil=s Bag).
Tapizar won the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile at Santa
Anita and two other graded stakes. He stood the 2014
season at Gainesway Farm for $15,000.
AAfter the Tizway filly sold, I suggested that we breed
to Tapizar, who I love, and off a $15,000 stud fee, we
did all right,@ said Hayden.
Asked about the appeal of Tapizar, he explained,
AYou have to love Tapit, and he=s a great son of Tapit.
He won the Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile, and he=s a beautiful
horse. We actually bought a share in him, and we=re
excited because we have two more bullets at home by
Tapizar who will head to the yearling sales next year.@

In four previous head-to-head meetings, Wildcat Red
had finished in front each time, but East Hall finally
exacted his revenge in this nominal prep for the
$350,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Jan.
17. Beaten 10 1/2 lengths into second by Wildcat Red
in the Quality Road S. across town June 28, East Hall
was up late for a 9-1 upset of the Ohio Derby July 19,
but reportedly grabbed a quarter when a midpack sixth
to Vicar=s in Trouble (Into Mischief) in the GII Super
Derby Sept. 6. That effort may have had some
believing he didn=t measure up in graded company, and
the chestnut was allowed to go off at 16-1 in the
GII Indiana Derby Oct. 4, but he pestered Vicar=s in
Trouble the whole way and outstayed him to score by a
length with Luis Saez aboard for the first time.
Longshot I=m Steppin= It Up (Congrats) beat Wildcat Red
for early speed and took them around the first turn, as
East Hall raced last but one and slipstreamed Schivarelli
down the backstretch. The third choice came under a
busy ride fully 3 1/2 furlongs from the wire, but
sustained a rally into contention four wide to the
outside of Schivarelli into the stretch. Wildcat Red, who
took command under a confident Edgar Prado at the
five-sixteenths marker, led into the final furlong, but
East Hall had his measure and was going away late.
AWe may give him some time now or we may end up in
the Clark [H. at Churchill Downs Nov. 28], who
knows,@ said winning trainer Bill Kaplan. AAnything=s
possible. He=s that kind of solid horse." Click for the

J “TDN Rising Star” J Mr. Jordan made a

pacesetter, only in
need of room at the top of the stretch. Eased out to the
three path by Paco Lopez, Mr. Jordan edged to the
front with a furlong to race and was under a hard hold
to score by a decisive margin. AI love the horse,@ said
Lopez. AThe first time, he was a little bit green. The
horse is still learning, but I think the horse has a lot, a
lot of talent.@ Of his trip, Lopez added, AI had a lot of
horse. I didn=t want to make the lead. I wanted to teach
the horse to come from behind and get a little bit of dirt
in the face. He did pretty good. I asked my horse and
showed him the whip and I had a lot of horse.@ Cont. p2

Juvenile Sprint S. cont.
Regarding Mr. Jordan, winning conditioner Eddie
Plesa added, AYou have to have guts to win races. He
overcame a start; he overcame horses in front of him. If
you looked at him before, maybe people thought he
was just a speed demon who just overshadowed
everybody, but he proved today that he could sit off
the pace and be patient. I thought Paco rode an
outstanding race on him. He was the best horse. I told
my partners, >My feeling is he=s the best horse, but he=s
got experience going against him. He=s going against
horses that have run four or five times. If experience
doesn=t kill us, we should win the race.=@ Of what might
be next for the grey, Plesa offered, AI haven=t plotted it
out. I will sit down after this race and come up with
some kind of plan. Paco=s always had the impression
that the horse will go around two turns. He said that
before this horse ever ran. He said this horse will go all
day. I think he will go around two turns, so there=s a lot
to look forward to.@ Click for the brisnet.com chart or

Swinger=s Party reeled off a pair of stylish victories
over Calder=s main track last spring, including a ninelength romp against two-other-than company June 23.
Runner-up behind the talented Dreaming of Sophia
(Lewis Michael) in a sloppy renewal of the Cellars
Shiraz S. in July, the filly rounded out the season with
a fifth in the grassy Judy=s Red Shoes S. in September.
A credible second after setting the pace in the June 14
Nancy=s Glitter H., the dark bay tired badly to finish last
of seven in the nine-furlong GIII Shuvee H. over the
muddy Saratoga track and was given a 4-1 chance to
get back on track in this cut back in class and trip.
Settled in a stalking third behind favored Devil=s Cave
(Put It Back) and Puddifoot (Red Giant), the Marty
Wolfson trainee took command through 3/4 of a mile in
1:13.39, opened a solid advantage approaching the
stretch and had enough left to fend off Flutterby.
Devil=s Cave, who was last seen finishing third in the
May 2 GI La Troienne S. at Churchill Downs, faded to
fifth, while Puddifoot trailed home in eighth. AIt was a
very tough race up there,@ said winning trainer Marty
Wolfson. AShe just loves this track. She won two in a
row last year [by open lengths], so she loves it here.

Hangover Saturday kicked off her career with a sharp
score sprinting five panels over the Gulfstream lawn
Aug. 8 before faltering and trailing home last of 13 in
the seven-furlong Susan=s Girl S., part of the Florida
Sire Stakes, on the dirt Sept. 6. Back on the grass for
the Our Dear Peggy S. over a mile Oct. 4, the bay
pressed the early pace and wilted late to be fifth,
beaten 5 1/4 lengths. Sent off the 5-2 second choice
behind favored Like a Queen (Corinthian), runner-up in
the Our Dear Peggy S., Hangover Saturday assumed
her customary place at the head of affairs and was
allowed to saunter through opening fractions of :25 and
:51 1/5. Comfortably in charge turning for home, she
was clear of Miss Margaret at the wire. AIt=s not
completely unexpected,@ revealed winning trainer David
Fawkes. AThis filly has been breezing really well for me.
She=s been doing everything right for me in the

solid worktab over the main track in Hallandale, was
supported at 7-2 for this first try. Away well, the dark
bay was keen to do more early as he took up a midpack spot. He made a nifty inside-to-out move to pick
off several rivals coming into the lane, and sidled up to
the leading duo at the head of the straight. Two Step
Temper took over in midstretch and, despite taking an
award step passing the chute, kicked on to don cap and

with a close-up second in a Sandown handicap
Sept. 12. Given Lasix for her Stateside bow, the 13-1

Allred Cancels Champion of Champions:
Ed Allred, the owner and a director of Los Alamitos
Race Course, has announced the cancellation of the
$750,000 Champion of Champions race, which was to
be held Saturday, Dec. 13. The historic classic, first run
in 1972, has usually determined World Championship
honors. The move comes two weeks after Allred
canceled the $1-million estimated Los Alamitos Super
Derby in the wake of suspicious results from the trials
for that event. A statement from the track read, AIt was
felt by track management for several reasons that this
year=s edition of the race would not draw a
representative field of horses from the nation=s leading
quarter horse tracks.@ In the release, Allred added that,
AThe major quarter horse tracks and the American
Quarter Horse Association need to standardize and
enforce regulations prohibiting clenbuterol and its
analogues.@ On Dec. 13, 2014, the date of the
cancelled Champion of Champions, a $100,000-added
Christmas Invitational will be featured at 400 yards for
3-year-olds and up. Los Alamitos Race Course will
resume the Champion of Champions in 2015 with a
purse of at least $600,000.

In a year in which he has carried all before him, it
was only fitting that David O=Meara should place the
full stop on the British turf flat racing season in this
traditional closer. As with many of his stable runners,
Open Eagle has improved and flourished markedly since
coming under the auspices of the country=s brightest
training prospect. Spending his formative period with
Jean-Claude Rouget, the bay failed to make into the
type of performer that conditioner requires and so
passed into the hands of O=Meara during last summer.
Third in this race on only his second start for his new
barn, he had finished out of the frame in six subsequent
starts before enjoying a revival on his last three and
entered this on the back of a win over 10 furlongs at
Redcar on Tuesday. Taken wide from the other runners
to avoid the gluepot conditions, he traveled like the
winner a long way from home and once pointed at the
winning line turned the last four furlongs into a
procession. AThat was a great performance,@ jockey
Daniel Tudhope commented. AThe ground is obviously a
lot better out there in the middle of the track and David
[O=Meara] told me to go as wide as I liked. He got the
tactics right.@ His typically understated trainer added,
AThat was a great ride. History says you can go wide
around here and gain a bit of an advantage and we
were drawn out anyway. We=ve had some really good
ones this year.@

In attritional conditions as Britain=s flat turf season
drew to a gloomy end, Lady Tiana proved the most
relentless as she captured a first black-type success
with a dash of style. Having shown that this type of
ground held no fears when winning over nine furlongs
in a Sandown handicap May 22, the bay was back in
the winner=s spot again on a soft surface over this trip
at Nottingham Oct. 15. Racing with enthusiasm under
cover in fifth, she was held on to by Graham Lee, who
allowed Merry Me first run in midstretch, but loomed
alongside that rival traveling strongly with a furlong to
race. Quickly asserting when shaken up, she was
pushed out with hands and heels as Princess Loulou
belatedly appeared on the scene.

KINGSCOTE HOSPITALIZED AFTER FALL
Jockey Richard Kingscote, who rode Brown Panther

in September, underwent surgery on his arm after
sustaining several injuries in a five-horse pileup at
Wolverhampton Thursday. Kingscote suffered a broken

Hanagan, was also involved in the spill, and he suffered
a broken collarbone. The rider's agent, Richard Hale,
said, "It was a clean break of the collarbone and he'll
be out for a good month. At least it's the end of the
season, and he'll be back for the [Dubai] Carnival. It
could have been much worse." Fitz Flyer (Ire)

Prepping for the Oaks when runner-up in the May 7
Listed Cheshire Oaks over an extended 11-furlong trip,
Secret Pursuit lost her chance to contest the Epsom
Classic when running too freely and fading into fifth in
Goodwood=s Listed Height of Fashion S. over this trip
May 22. Off since beating only one of her 23 rivals in
Royal Ascot=s Listed Sandringham H. reverting to a mile
June 18, the bay relished the testing conditions to
secure a clear-cut first black-type success. Always
close up in a stalking second, she was allowed to stride
to the front at the top of the stretch and steadily drew
away for a commanding score. AShe is a nice filly who
needs the ground as soft as it was today,@ commented
trainer Marcus Tregoning. AAfter her last race, we gave
her a good break and she came back fresh and well. It
was much too firm for her in the summer anyway and
as we bought her here at the Breeze-Ups she was
eligible for the premiums. She stays in training as a 4year-old, so she will definitely come back to France
again.@

{G1SP-Eng}, by Green Desert) was sent to the front
after breaking in mid-division in this debut. Stoked up
once into the stretch run, the 48-5 chance was ridden
out inside the final furlong to hold the late bid of Le
Reveuse (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by three-quarters of a
length. Behnasa (Fr) (Dansili {GB}), a daughter of G1SP
Behkara (Ire) (Kris {GB}), faded late after racing handy
and finished eighth. The winner, a i43,000 GOFORB
yearling who RNA=d at i14,000 as an ARQMAY
breezer, is a half to Makaan (Swain {Ire}), GSW-Fr,
$142,432; and Almail (Swain {Ire}), SW & GSP-Fr,

LA CHICA SENSUAL (IRE) (f, 2, Mastercraftsman {Ire}-Gates Of Eden, by Kingmambo), fourth after a troubled
trip in her debut Oct. 11, relished the testing heavy
ground and forced the pace before the final turn here.
The filly stayed on well to score by a half-length at 8-1,
defeating some of the best juveniles trained in Sicily,
and will now aim for the Listed Criterium Del
Mediterraneo in December at the same venue. She is
the second winner from four foals of racing age for her
dam, a $300,000 purchase at the Keeneland September
sale 2004. Gates Of Eden has a yearling filly by
Fairbanks, a colt foal by Creative Cause and was
purchased by Ken and Sarah Ramsey for $30,000 at
Keeneland November in 2013. Gates Of Eden=s third

Have You Seen The Light?
“We used Equilume Light Masks on our barren mares last season at Jackson Purchase Farm. I
am happy to say that the masks worked great. All of the mares had breedable follicles
and had gone through transition by February 14th. In the winter of 2014 we had zero
issues with the mares being outside 24/7, often in sub-zero temperatures. Besides the
fact that the mares all cycled as I hoped, I spent less on van and vet charges
and had healthier mares. Like extended turnout for any class of horse, daily observation, occasional adjusting of masks and adjustment of feed and hay is necessary.
For me the economics were good and the mares simply did better outside.
I am a believer!”
- Dr. Steve Jackson, Bluegrass Equine Nutrition, Lexington, Kentucky.
It is recommended that Equilume™ Light Masks are fitted between
November 15th & December 1st for maximum effect.
