BLUE-BLOOD HILLABY BEST IN BESSARABIAN
GOFFS NOVEMBER BEGINS TODAY
By Kelsey Riley
The mixed sales scene today shifts across the
Atlantic to Ireland, where Goffs kicks off its six-day
November Sale with its first of four days of foal sales at
the Kill Paddocks in County Kildare. The two-day
Breeding Stock Sale will bring proceedings to a close
Nov. 21 and 22. Last
year=s foal sale wrapped
up with solid statistics,
which included a slightly
increased (1.5%)
average of i26,264 and
a median of i17,000,
which was up 13% on
2013 figures. The
strength of trade was
highlighted by the
buyback rate, which
The Goffs November Foal Sale

includes six first-crop Frankel foals The sale is designed as
Racing Post
a rising crescendo, with
prices expected to
increase each day, and Goffs Chief Executive Henry
Beeby noted yesterday the Kill Paddocks were bustling,
especially with pinhookers eager to uncover the value
buys amongst the day one offerings. AThe sales
grounds are very busy today--I=ve never seen the sales
grounds as busy the day before a foal sale,@ Beeby said.
AThere are lots and lots of pinhookers looking at the
moment, and we=re expecting another influx tomorrow.
It=ll increase as the sales goes on. Things are very
active today; more active than we normally see.@
While the action will no doubt reach a monumental
peak Thursday when the much-publicized six first-crop
Frankel (GB) foals are offered (click here for a Nov. 12
feature), as well as a pair by his peerless sire Galileo
(Ire) and offerings by the likes of Sea the Stars (Ire),
Invincible Spirit (Ire), Shamardal and Teofilo (Ire), Beeby
pointed out that there is much strength in depth
amongst the sires on offer, with a particularly exciting
group of first-season sires represented, which also
includes Excelebration (Ire), Nathaniel (Ire), Sepoy (Aus)
and So You Think (NZ). AWhile much of the attention
has been on the Frankel foals, there are significant
numbers of really cracking looking foals by other firstseason sires turning up, and it looks a very solid
catalogue,@ Beeby said. Cont. p3
Stonestreet Stables paid $500,000 to secure
Hillaby (Distorted Humor) from the Melynk Racing
Stables Dispersal at last summer=s Fasig-Tipton July
sale, and that investment looked like a bargain after the
daughter of Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill
(Point Given) added her second consecutive victory in
Sunday=s GII Bessarabian S. at Woodbine. Keen right
from the start, Hillaby allowed jockey Patrick Husbands
to cajole her into a stalking position as Cryptic Message
(Crypograph) carved out a sharp opening quarter in
:22 3/5. Pressured from the outside by Native
Bombshell (War Front) down the backside, Hillaby
spurted away from that rival when Husbands pushed
the pedal and zeroed in on the frontrunner as longshot
Grace Phil (Philanthropist) briefly entered the fray
nearing the quarter pole. Undaunted, Hillaby quickly
dispensed of the 47-1 shot, reached even terms with
the weakening Cryptic Message turning for home, and
opened up a solid advantage with a furlong left to
negotiate. Asked for her all late, the Ontario-bred had
enough left in reserve to hold off closing Disco Barbie
(Pure Prize) by 2 3/4 lengths at the wire. AShe left
running, but I knew I couldn=t go with [jockey] Eurico
[da Silva, aboard Cryptic Message], so I tried to ease
her back and get to the outside,@ said winning jockey
Patrick Husbands. AJesse [Campbell, aboard Native
Bombshell] did what he had to do to keep me in...but
when Jesse went ahead, I put her back on her right
lead and she just took me around there.@

Goffs cont. from p1
Last year=s Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale
created unprecedented waves thanks largely to the
Paulyn Dispersal, which included 24-head worth
i12,734,000--headed by the i6 million Chicquita (Ire)
(Montjeu {Ire})--and
contributed to an average
that was up a whopping
166% (i73,982) and a
median that swelled by
36% (i15,000). It is
important to note,
however, that with the
Paulyn Dispersal aside,
the breeding stock sale
last year posted an
average of i40,159 (up
Henry Beeby
44%) and a median of
Goffs
i14,500 (up 32%),
highlighting the strength across the catalogue. Like last
year=s foal sale, the breeding stock sale also
experienced a dramatic drop in buybacks--last year=s
figure was 15%, whereas in 2013 it was 39%.
While acknowledging that those highs wouldn=t be hit
this year, Beeby noted that the strength of the market
for Thoroughbreds both at Goffs and around the world
in the past year is a reason for optimism that trade will
be strong. AThere=s no question we won=t get the high
spots we did last year, because there are only a few
Chicquitas in the world and they only come around
once in a while,@ he said. ABut by the same token [the
catalogue] measures up to any previous years we=ve
had. We=re quietly hopeful we=ll have a strong market
for that as well.@ The European breeding stock sector
provided more than its share of fireworks 12 months
ago, with the sales of the record-breaking Immortal
Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) (4.7 million guineas) and
Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (4 million
guineas) at Tattersalls December immediately following
Goffs= history-defining sale, and Beeby noted that
caliber of horse seems to be largely absent from the
scene this year. AThere is probably less top-quality
breeding stock on offer in Europe at the moment than
there has been in years gone by, but we certainly have
a good share of what=s out there,@ he said.
AWe=d expect another international buying bench
backed up by a strong representation from India and
Turkey, which comes to our sale every year, and some
Southern Hemisphere people coming again. I would be
hopeful it will be a good finish to the sale.@ One
returning alumni from last year=s sale is the 8-year-old
mare Song (Ire)
(Sadler=s Wells),
who was a
i1 million purchase
by Friarstown Stud
from the Paulyn
Dispersal. The
Frankel filly Song
was carrying at the
time will be offered
Thursday, while
Song selling at Goffs Nov last year
Song will go through
Racing Post
the ring Friday as lot
1184 in foal to Dubawi (Ire). Song is a full-sister to
Classic winner Yesterday (Ire) and champion Quarter
Moon (Ire). As highlighted in the TDN of Nov. 14
(click here), Jim Bolger=s Redmondstown Stud will offer
10 mares, including dual Group 3 winner Maoineach
(Congaree), carrying to the first crop of Dawn Approach
(Ire) (lot 1141) and Wake Me Up (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar
{Ire}), a half-sister to Dawn Approach in foal to that
Classic winner and champion=s sire New Approach (Ire)
(lot 1139). The ever-popular draft of the Aga Khan will
this year feature the 5-year-old stakes-winning mare
Dalkova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 1151). Dalkova hails
from the family of Group 1 winners Daliapour (Ire),
Darshaan (GB), Dar Re Mi (GB), Rewilding (GB),
Diaghilev (Ire) and Darazari (Ire). AIt was always going
to be a very difficult job to follow up what we had last
year, because that was, by comment consent, once in a
generation,@ Beeby noted. ABut I think what the Goffs
November Sale produces is a good, strong two days of
Irish breeding stock. There are a few gems in there, so I
think it=s a catalogue that should appeal to a wide
audience.@ The Goffs November Foal Sale begins each
day at 11 a.m. local time. For the catalogue, results and

BALLYLINCH RIDING VEGA HIGH
By Emma Berry
Following one of the strongest years of bloodstock
auctions in recent times, many will be approaching the
foal sales with optimism, but few have the right to feel
quite so positive as the team at Ballylinch Stud.
Terrific results at the
sales and on the track,
plus a dream start to the
stud career of a young
stallion would have most
people bouncing off the
walls, but Ballylinch's
unflappable Managing
Director John O'Connor is
taking it all in his stride. As
we speak, he has just
watched yet another
first-crop winner for the
aforementioned young sire,
Lope De Vega (Ire)
John O’Connor
(Shamardal), courtesy of
Tattersalls
the first-out victory for
Exceedingly Rare (Ire) at Chantilly, which brings the
freshman's tally to 22.
"It has been a very good year and it seems to be
continuing," said O'Connor in his understated manner.
A fee rise from i12,500 to i40,000 has not stopped
breeders jamming the phone lines to secure a slot in
Lope De Vega's book for next season.
And the team in County Kilkenny can rejoice not just
in his resounding success, but in the significant part
they have played in it. His first Group 1 winner, the
Dewhurst S. victor Belardo (Ire), was bred by Ballylinch
Stud, as was his second top-rated horse, Burnt Sugar
(Ire), winner of the
G3 Sirenia S., a race
won in the previous year
by his half-brother
Brown Sugar (Ire)
(Tamayuz {GB}).
O'Connor continued,
"Lope De Vega is flying.
It is very satisfying to
have bred his Group 1
winner and in some
Lope De Vega
ways it's a good
Ballylinch
indicator for our clients
too. They know we'll send quality mares to our young
stallions and that makes it twice as satisfying--it's not
just that we have the sire and the dam."
Next year, the anticipation and excitement will
resume as another of the stud's young residents,
Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}), is represented on the track
by members of his first crop. He has a hard act to
follow, but hopes are high that he will do just that.
"Quite a few of the mares we sent to Lope De Vega
we then sent to Dream Ahead the following year," said
O'Connor. "We pick the mares that we think will give
the young stallions the best chance." Cont. p5

Dream Ahead's first test in the sales ring has been
passed with flying colors, with his yearlings having sold
for an average of i92,550 (approximately $115,500).
"I'm really pleased with the athleticism of his stock-they look racy across the board and they seem to have
good temperaments, as he has,@ O=Connor said.
AThey've sold very well--his average is good--and he's
done very well for the people
who have used him.@
O=Connor continued, "Sales
are obviously important to
commercial breeders, but the
racecourse is the ultimate test
for a stallion and the ones
who do well will become
commercial. It's important to
keep your eye on the winning
post at all times. I'd be very
optimistic about Dream
Ahead's chances."
With the Ballylinch Stud
draft for the Goffs November
Foal Sale including one of the
six Frankel foals to be offered
Dream Ahead
in Kildare next week, the
Ballylinch
consignment is certain to
garner plenty of interest, but he's far from being the
only weanling of note. Indeed, the half-brother to
G3 Prix Thomas Bryon winner US Law (Ire) (Lawman
{Fr}) (lot 886) is one of 23 foals about to come under
the hammer for Ballylinch, including a brace for Lope De
Vega and Dream Ahead, respectively.
"There are two really nice colts by Lope De Vega,
including a full-brother to his first-crop winner Back To
Base (Ire)," said O'Connor of the son of Indian Express
(GB) (lot 919).
Meanwhile, lot 769, one of two Dream Ahead colts in
the draft, has received a decent update with the
G1 Melbourne Cup victory of Protectionist (Ger)
(Monsun {Ger}), whose third dam, Poughkeepsie (Ire),
is the youngster's grandam.
Goffs has already been a happy hunting ground this
year for Ballylinch Stud, who sold the top-priced filly-a i1.1 million Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to Lord
Shanakill (Speightstown)--at the Orby Sale at the
beginning of October. In fact, it was the second year
running that a filly out of Vimal and Gillian Khosla's
Green Room (Theatrical) was the best-selling Orby
female and her Galileo (Ire) daughter, who fetched
i680,000 in 2013, is now a Group 1 winner who goes
by the name of Together Forever (Ire).
AAmanda Skiffington bought the Sea The Stars filly
and she proved to be very astute in that regard, as
Together Forever won the G1 Fillies' Mile a few weeks
later," said O'Connor. Cont. p6

Like the Sirenia S., the Fillies' Mile has been
dominated by Ballylinch graduates in the last two
seasons. Agnes Stewart (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), bred by
John O'Connor in partnership with Ballyhane Stud,
chased home Together Forever for second, having
previously won the G2 May Hill S., while the 2013
winner, the ill-fated Chriselliam (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), was
bred by Ballylinch Stud from the Danehill mare Danielli
{Ire}). She subsequently won the GI Breeders' Cup
Juvenile Fillies Turf before succumbing to a serious foot
infection earlier this year.
O'Connor can justifiably approach the forthcoming
sales with confidence. He said, "Pinhookers are
generally an optimistic lot, but I don't think they'll go
too crazy--lessons have been learned from the last
crash. Having said that, the foal sales are bound to be
strong this year. Once again it will be focused on
certain sires and very good individuals--sometimes
there's an over-focus on a certain number of
fashionable sires. There's always value to be found
away from the obvious stallions."
As well as the 23 weanlings, Ballylinch Stud also
offers 18 mares at Goffs during the two-day broodmare
sale--five of whom are being sold in foal to Lope De
Vega.
"We split our draft among the different sales but
Goffs is our local sale and we always like to have a
strong draft there," he explained. "You have to give
credit to Henry Beeby and his team--their hard work is
being rewarded."

SKY LANTERN TO DUBAWI
Four-time Group 1 winner Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red
Clubs {Ire}) will be covered by Dubawi (Ire) in her first
season at stud next year, according to Racing Post.
Trained initially by Richard Hannon Sr. for owner Ben
Keswick, Sky Lantern won the G1 Moyglare Stud S. as
a 2-year-old in 2012, and added the following season=s
G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S., and G1 Sun
Chariot S. Handed over to Richard Hannon Jr. when he
took over his father=s training license this year, Sky
Lantern failed to regain her best form, finishing off the
board in three starts. Dubawi, who has sired 16
Group 1 winners including this year=s G1 2000 Guineas
victor and Sky Lantern=s stablemate Night of Thunder
(Ire), will stand for ,125,000 in 2015, which represents
Britain=s co-highest fee alongside Frankel (GB).

him a second win in this richest domestic contest.
Victorious in the 2013 Clasico Ensayo at San Isidro, the
4-year-old was third as the odds-on favorite in this

April before being purchased to race in Singapore. He
dropped his first three local appearances, including

War Affair, looking to become the first to sweep the

three wide while traveling well with cover down the
backstretch and looked poised to make a run as they
swung around the final turn. Meanwhile up front,
Quechua was given his cue approaching the stretch and
went past Goodman to lead at the 300-meter mark.
War Affair, carrying top weight of 129 pounds, tried to
rally down the center, but flattened out just a touch,
and Quechua outstayed his rivals for the victory.
Emperor=s Banquet finished well to be second ahead of
Cheetah On Fire, who looked dangerous up the rail in

SECOND TIME LUCKY FOR LACHESIS
Lachesis (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) revealed herself
as a filly to watch when finishing second in last year=s

Mambo (Jpn) (Suzuka Mambo {Jpn}), and the now
4-year-old bested this year=s Oaks winner, Nuovo
Record (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}), in this year=s renewal
yesterday to earn her first stakes score. Off half-step
slow from her rail draw, Lachesis kept a cool head and
saved ground while settling slightly better than
midpack, about five lengths off the lead and just off the
heels of Nuovo Record. Lachesis kept the favorite well
within her sights as the field rounded the final bend,
and while Nuovo Record found an opening one path off
the fence as they turned for home, Lachesis was forced
to go three-wide to find daylight. That proved but a
minor inconvenience, however, as Lachesis gradually
cut down Nuovo Record=s advantage in the closing
stages, nailing the sophomore on the line. Meisho
Mambo, sent off the second-choice to go back-to-back,
could manage no better than 12th. AHer start wasn=t
great, but we were able to position ourselves in an ideal
spot behind Nuovo Record during the first two corners,@
said jockey Yuga Kawada. AWe were squeezed in a bit
at the straight, but she had plenty of run and the will to
go, and really stretched well up to the finish.@

The winner of three of her first five starts, Lachesis
entered last year=s Queen Elizabeth II Cup as the wiseguy horse off a pair of allowance scores, and she defied
her 16-1 odds with a smart runner-up effort. Shelved
until the Feb. 16 G2 Kyoto Kinen over the same track
and trip, Lachesis finished fourth, beaten two lengths,
and returned a month later over a furlong shorter to
finish second by a nose in the G3 Chunichi Shimbun
Hai. The bay could not sustain the momentum when
dropped back to eight furlongs for the G1 Victoria Mile
May 18, finishing 15th of 18, beaten five lengths, and
she was given a three-month summer holiday.
Resurfacing in the G2 Sankei Sho All Comers S. back
at this 2200 meter distance Sept. 28, Lachesis set
herself up for a second tilt at this coveted prize with a
second-place finish. She highlighted a good day at the
office yesterday for trainer Katsuhiko Sumii, who also
trained the third-place finisher Dia de la Madre.
Lachesis=s dam, the GII Monmouth Oaks winner and

RACETRACK ROUND-UP
FEATURE PRESENTATION • GII MRS. REVERE S.
Heart to Heart to Mathis Bros Mile...
Terry Hamilton=s Heart to Heart (English Channel),
victorious in last Saturday=s GIII Commonwealth Turf at
Churchill Downs, came out of the race in good order
and is expected to
make one more
start this season,
according to trainer
Brian Lynch. The
3-year-old is being
pointed toward
Santa Anita=s
Dec. 26 GII Mathis
Brothers Mile,
formally known as
the Sir Beaufort S.
Heart to Heart draws off in the
AHe came out
Commonwealth Turf
great,@
Lynch said.
Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer
AHe seemed like a
very happy horse this morning.@
Regarding his next start, Lynch added, AIt=s the last of
the 3-year-old stakes and is basically an ideal distance
for him--a two-turn mile on the turf--and I think he will
really like that turf course out there.@
Possible goals for the colt may include the GI Maker=s
46 Mile at Keeneland or Churchill=s GI Woodford
Reserve Turf Classic, contested on Kentucky Derby
Day.
AWe=ll give him a little break after [the Mathis Bros
Mile],@ Lynch said. AIf he continues to improve, we=ll
look to run him again as a 4-year-old at Keeneland and
then we hope to have him back there at Churchill on
Kentucky Derby Day.@
SPARKLING REVIEW DONE FOR THE YEAR?
Sparkling Review (Lemon Drop Kid), winner of last
Saturday=s GII Mrs. Revere S. at Churchill, exited her
win in good order, according to trainer Ben Colebrook.
Campaigned by Edward Seltzer and Beverly Anderson,
Sparkling Review was nominated to both the Nov. 29
GI Hollywood Turf Cup and Nov. 30 GI Matriarch at Del
Mar, but her trainer indicated yesterday morning that
both races were Alongshots@ for the filly at this point.
AShe came out of it great,@ Colebrook said. AShe ate up
[yesterday] morning and was clean-legged, so
everything is good.@ Regarding making another start
this season, Colebrook added, AI think it would be a
longshot to go out to California at this point. I=ll still talk
about it with the owners, but most likely we will call it
a year with her and hope to have her back next year.
With her pedigree, I would think she definitely should
continue to improve in 2015.@

OBITUARIES
POPULAR JUMPS TRAINER HUGHES DIES
Dessie Hughes, a highly accomplished jumps jockey
and trainer and father of three-time champion flat
jockey Richard Hughes, has died aged 71.
Hughes rode his first
winner in a Tramore flat race
in June 1962, and before
shifting his focus to training
in 1979 he took out such
coveted prizes as the
Cheltenham Gold Cup,
Champion Hurdle and Arkle
Trophy. Hughes won three
consecutive Aintree Hurdles
on Monksfield, but
incidentally never completed
the course in four rides in
the Grand National.
Hughes took out his
Dessie Hughes and his
training license in 1979 at
granddaughter, Alexandra, in Osborne Lodge next to The
June
Curragh, and found
Racing Post
immediate success with his
first runner on Jan. 1, 1980. One of his highlight horses
was Hardy Eustace, who won seven Grade 1s including
the Champion Hurdle twice.
Hughes was honored at yesterday=s Cheltenham
Festival, a meeting at which he recorded eight wins as
a jockey and six as a trainer, with a tribute and a
moment=s silence. Jockeys riding at Cheltenham
yesterday wore black armbands.
Trainer Willie Mullins was amongst the racing
personalities who paid tribute to Hughes yesterday.
"I would call him the professional's professional,@ the
conditioner told At The Races. AHe very seldom made a
wrong choice. I remember the first time I rode in a
professional race at Punchestown and I thought I'd
follow Dessie Hughes. He won the race. I was third or
fourth and I got such an insight on how to ride a race.
He was a fantastic jockey and brought that same ability
to his training career. He always had a top team of
horses and a great team of loyal owners. He had a
great team behind him. Our sympathy is with
everyone."
Leading jumps owner JP McManus added from
Ireland=s Punchestown festival, "It's a sad day--you
could feel it the minute you walked into Punchestown
how low the mood is. Dessie was a perfect gentleman,
trainer, jockey--he was everything you would want in a
person. He will be missed, but he won't be forgotten.
His family are all in our thoughts."

Armando Renzoni thought from day one that she was
a star. Maybe the above story is not important, but I
think it is a tribute to Renzoni, a great man and trainer,
and is it a story which does show again that with
horses you do learn something new every time.
Giorgio Barsotti
Just a quick note on the story that appeared in
Thursday's TDN about Fiesolana. She was purchased
by the late Armando Renzoni at Goresbridge through
agent Federico Barberini. She ran three times for
Renzoni, finishing fifth, second and third at Capannelle
in Rome before Renzoni died. Two weeks after his
death, she finally broke her maiden by seven lengths in
Naples on Dec. 5 as a 2-year-old over 2000 meters.
The filly was owned in partnership by Millennium Stable
and Armando Renzoni. Millenium Stable took over the
partnership and they decided to send her in training to
France to Jean-Claude Rouget's stable where Simone
Brogi, a nephew of Renzoni's wife, was working as
assistant trainer. Trained by Rouget, she ran under
Simone Brogi's colors four times in France, with two
wins in condition races, one fourth in a Listed race and
sixth in her last French run as 3-year-old. Unfortunately,
in that last race she was injured, and the owners
decided to sell her. She was sold to Ireland by Barberini,
mainly as mare prospect. After nearly one year off, she
reappeared under the care of McCreery, who has done
a fantastic job with her.
