WHY CENTRAL QUEENSLAND CONTINUES TO BE ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE! $159 BILLION REASONS

$159 BILLION REASONS WHY CENTRAL QUEENSLAND
CONTINUES TO BE ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE!
12th July 2013
Central Queensland continues to be the economic powerhouse of the state, even amidst
recent downturn in the booming resources sector.
Today, Capricorn Enterprise has released its findings for the regions detailed Major Project
Status Report. The report, which involves weeks of detailed research, reveals $159 Billion
worth of projects continue to be underway or planned over the next decade.
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll said the figure represented nearly a 10 per cent hike
in the value of major projects underway and planned for the area since April 2011.
The report categories include Coal, Minerals Energy, Rail, Road and Development.
Ms Carroll said “In 2009 we hit $100 Billion worth of projects for CQ, which grew in 2011 to
$146 Billion. Now in 2013, despite recent downturns, we still have a massive $159 Billion
worth of projects underway and planned for the next decade. CQ continues to be the
economic powerhouse of the state.”
Since the April 2011 Major Projects Status report, a number of projects worth $8 Billion have
been completed in the region, including coal, mineral and energy projects, roads and
transport infrastructure, and community and schools infrastructure. Completed projects are
not included in the 2013 summary.
The estimated costs for the new and ongoing major project categories is greater in 2013 than
in 2011 with the exception of minerals projects ($7.766B in 2011 and $6.5B in 2013) and rail
projects ($6.869B in 2011 and $6.770B in 2013). The 2013 Major Projects report also
includes a number of projects which have been identified where costs have yet to be
published. Data reported in 2011 but not in 2013 included Ports, Water, Community and
Schools (Building the Education Revolution).
Ms Carroll said “We have hundreds of major infrastructure and development projects
underway or in the pipeline for everything from tourism, resources and energy to
construction, roads and rail.”
“Whilst media seems to be focussed on the job losses announced, we must remember that
businesses are still employing people. These economic fluctuations are part and parcel of
our employment cycle and the fact is that a similar number of people were unemployed in
the Rockhampton Regional Council boundary in March 2013 (4,070 persons) compared to
March 2012 (4,019 persons)” she said.
“More telling, is that there has been job growth - in March 2013 there were an additional 1,620 people in
the labour force in our area compared to the same time last year“ she said.

The Capricorn Coast and Gracemere continue to emerge as a dormitory areas for the expanding industrial,
commercial, retail and residential development occurring in and around Rockhampton.
“Central Queensland’s growth is putting pressure on its property market like never before. We continue to
see a strong real estate and rental market and the demand for accommodation spilling over from
Gladstone to Rockhampton and coastal areas like Yeppoon” she said.
