Preparations for the Christmas season remind us how much we
all want to be generous. We all want to give good gifts to one
another. Yet, often when it comes to giving back to God our
response is, “Not yet!” We put off sharing our time, talent and
treasure for another day. We say we will give when we have
more time or more money. Yet, none of us knows when God
will come and ask for an accounting of how we used the gifts
entrusted to our care. The start of Advent reminds us not to put
off our stewardship. The Lord is coming!

This weekend we begin our Advent journey to Christmas.
As one who strongly believes it is not necessary to reinvent the
wheel, this weekend I will borrow the thoughts of British
spiritual writer Caryll Houselander (1901-1954). The excerpt
is from her best-selling spiritual classic, The Reed of God.
“Advent is the season of the secret, the secret of the growth of
Christ, of divine love growing in silence. It is the season of
humility, silence, and growth. For nine months, Christ grew in
his mother’s body. By his own will, she formed him from
herself, from the simplicity of her daily life. She had nothing
to give him but herself. He asked for nothing else. She simply
gave him herself.”
Working, eating, sleeping, Mary was forming Jesus’ body
from hers. From her humanity she gave him his humanity.
Walking in the streets of Nazareth to do her shopping, to visit
her friends, she set his feet on the path to Jerusalem. Washing,
weaving, kneading, sweeping, her hands prepared his hands
for the nails. Every beat of her heart gave him his heart to love
with; his heart to be broken by love. All her experience of the
world about her was gathered to Christ growing in her.
Looking upon the flowers, she gave him a human voice-the
voice we still hear in the silence of souls saying: “Consider the
lilies of the field.” Sleeping in her still room, she gave him the
sleep of the child in the cradle, the sleep of the young man
rocked in the storm-tossed boat. Breaking and eating the bread,
drinking the wine of the country, she gave him his flesh and
blood; she prepared the host for the Mass.
This time of Advent is absolutely essential to our
contemplation, too. If we have truly given our humanity to be
changed into Christ, it is essential that we do not disturb this
time of growth. Advent is a time of darkness of faith. We shall
not see Christ’s radiance in our lives yet; it is still hidden in
our darkness. Nevertheless, we must believe that this is
growing in our lives; we must believe it so firmly that we
cannot help relating everything, literally, to this almost
incredible reality. We ought to let everything grow in us, as
Christ grew in Mary. And we ought to realize that in
everything that does grow quietly in us, Christ grows. We
should let thoughts, words and songs grow slowly and unfold
in the darkness in us. In the seasons of our Advent-waking,
working, eating, sleeping, being-each breath is a breathing of
Christ into the world.

St. Patrick Parish Council News
The St. Patrick's Parish Council is seeking two volunteers to
join the Council this Fall. This is a great opportunity for any
parishioner interested in learning more about our parish and
how it operates. Time commitment is ~ 2 hours a month for
meetings, as well as some additional time to work on parish
projects. If you are interested please contact Mike Mohr at

St. Patrick Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus, Belltown Council
6190 sponsored an annual Thanksgiving Turkey and Food
Drive on November 13 & 14. The parishioners here at St
Patrick contributed items for distribution to families in our
town so they may share an enjoyable Thanksgiving with their
families. This year, a total of 50 turkeys and over 20 crates of
grocery items and fixings were donated. In addition, the
Knights have received $800 in cash donations for the Food
Bank. To this amount, the East Hampton Rotary Club will

25% adding $200 totaling $1,000. The Knights wish to thank
all who participated and contributed to this worthy cause. May
you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving.

We will care for your Children while you tend to Christmas
chores. They will bring home many treasures and craft
surprises that they can keep or use as gifts! Some fun activities
planned for your child include:

•Christmas Caroling & Tree Trimming
•Face Painting….and much more!
Bring a bagged lunch; we will supply drinks and desserts. The
cost is $15 per child or $25 per family. For planning purposes

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Let us come rejoicing into the Lord’s presence today as we
begin this Advent season. Jesus exhorts us to stay awake, and
so this Advent let us listen more closely to God’s word in
order to prepare ourselves for God’s coming into our hearts.
Even as we hear scriptures that prepare us for God’s coming at
the end of time, the best way to get ready for the final coming
is to be ready for God’s coming into our lives every day.

29th Annual Convocation for the
Priests in the Diocese of Norwich
The Annual Convocation for Priests will be held from
November 29 through December 1, 2010, at the Hyatt
Regency on Goat Island in Newport, RI. It will be a time for
all priests to gather with their bishop for spiritual renewal,
support, education and rest. No parish school or institutional
activities will be scheduled during these days. Please pray for
your priests, as they will be praying for you.
Father Nagle will be attending.
There will be no
morning Mass on Monday, Tuesday or
Wednesday
The theme of this year’s Convocation is “Personal and
Physical Wellness: The Path to a Whole and Holy Life.”
The key presenters will be Dr. Juan A. Sanchez, MD, who is
the Chair of the Stanley J. Dudrick Department of Surgery at
Saint Mary’s Health System in Waterbury, CT. His area of
expertise is in Cardiothoracic Surgery and healthy living. His
wife Lise Sanchez, is a certified Dietician and will be
speaking about keeping a healthy diet. In addition, Dr.
Edward Kudej, who is a Chiropractor and Physical Therapist,
and his wife, Mary Schianno Kudej, also a Physical
Therapist and Trainer, will be addressing the areas of physical
health and well being.

This would include, but not be limited to:
Changing light bulbs, keeping kitchen area, center hall and
offices clean, emptying trash on a regular basis, light painting,
maintaining inventory of supplies, keeping front entrances of
all facilities free of snow and ice (salted), cleaning church and
parish center when needed. Being aware of possible electrical,
mechanical & plumbing problems within the church, center
hall and rectory and reporting them to the Parish Secretary.
This is a part time position, 3 days a week, 2 hours a day, with
the possibility of more if needed. Please see Karen Adametz in
the Parish Office for an application.
The Giving Tree: The Giving Tree program is ongoing
until Sunday, December 12, 2010. We will be collecting new
unused books and games for the East Hampton Food Bank.
Please take a tag from the tree, make your purchase, attach the
tag to the item and place it under the tree. Please do not wrap
the gift. It is very important that the tag be returned with the
gift, so that it can get to the appropriated child. Thank you for
your generosity and continued support of this program. If you
have questions, call Dani in the Faith Formation Office,
267-6644.
The Annual list to sponsor a child through the East Hampton
Volunteer Food Bank for Christmas is now posted in the back
of the church. Please sign your name and phone number next
to the item you wish to purchase for a child. Please do not
wrap present but you may place in a Christmas bag. All
gifts must be returned to the Church by Monday, December
