NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST:
JUNE 24, 2012
Why does the Church celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist? Because “John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he
is the last.” (CCC. 523). He “goes ‘before [the Lord] in the spirit and power of Elijah”’ (CCC 696). John the Baptist “is
the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way, “who “inaugurates the Gospel…. from his
mother’s womb” (CCC 523). John the Baptist “proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the “voice
of the Consoler who is coming” (CCC 719). “with John the Baptist, the holy Spirit begins the restoration to man of
“the divine likeness.” (CCC 720)

FORERUNNER OF THE LORD …
The story of the conception and birth of John the Baptist is a very human story. His aged parents, childless,
conceive a son in their old age just as Abraham and Sarah had conceived Isaac. God’s promise of salvation
seems to include the delayed birth of very extraordinary children!
John was, as the prophet Isaiah says, known to God from his earliest days, fashioned in the womb of his
mother, Elizabeth, in secret, before anyone but she knew. He was strong in spirit from before his birth, and
he grew to become the most powerful preacher and prophet. He was the chosen forerunner of the Lord;Elijah
the prophet come back to announce the coming of the Messiah and to prepare the people by a baptism of
repentance. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STEWARDSHIP …
If indeed, our participation at Mass includes a gift, it is an
appropriate gesture to use our regular, weekly envelope as
a “gift wrapper.” Using your envelope allows you to place
your gift in the collection basket in a consistent manner.
Sacrificial Giving and the use of your envelope as a gift
wrapper should be a decision that is reflected in regular,
consistent giving – not occasional, or just in response to a
certain appeal. That consistency is also a part of the
practice of our faith and is part of the celebration of the
liturgy each and every week. It also allows the parish the
latitude to budget effectively.

THE ROLE OF GODPARENTS …
“There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.”
To be chosen as a godparent is a special honor. You, above
all others, have been entrusted with the responsibility to
participate in this child’s Christian life and education. This
privilege offers you the opportunity to develop a mutually
enriching spiritual relationship – one that will last
throughout this life and beyond. By living a Christian life
in partnership with your godchild, both of you will
experience the great joy of sharing a life of faith.

O GOD OUR CREATOR …
From your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
You have called us as your people and given us
The right and the duty to worship you, the only true God,
And your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
You call us to live out our faith in the midst of the Gospel
to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened:
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of
conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
A clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
Gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the
history of our nation,
So that, with every trial withstood
And every danger overcome –
For the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
And all who come after us –
This great land will always be “one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
WE ASK THIS THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD.
AMEN
FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM …
The Bishops of the United States have asked that all
parishes observe a “Fortnight for Freedom” from June
21st (the vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St.
Thomas Moore) to July 4th, Independence Day.
The purpose of this observance is to have a special time of
prayer, fasting, education, and witness for a new birth of
Religious Freedom for our country.
Here at St. Monica’s we will celebrate a “Fortnight for
Freedom” on Thursday June 28th at 7:30 pm.
Our Holy Hour for Religious Freedom will include music,
special prayers, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and
Benediction.
Please join us on this important occasion.
