date is a difficult task. You can be of immense help in this
regard. If you move or change your telephone number, please

avoid confusion, but it will also save the cost of paying

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“ It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of
God.” (Mark 10:25)
These words of Jesus are so harsh that sometimes we are
tempted to ignore them, thinking that He really could not
have meant them. Yet when our lives revolve around too
many material possessions it is difficult to find the
necessary time for God, for salvation and for God’s beloved
poor.

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
Don’t forget to have your Blood Pressure checked THIS
WEEKEND. The Parish Nurses will be available to take
your blood pressure after the 5:00pm Saturday Mass and
after the 10:30am Sunday Mass.
The call to “come follow me” always
begins with Jesus and his look of love.
Have you met Him? Have you
encountered His love? This past weekend
I experienced one of God’s great
miracles: the salmon run in Pulaski, NY. Placed into the Salmon
river as yearlings, King Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead
Trout begin a run against the current to their home. They are
“imprinted” by a combination of the fertilization process and the
waters into which they are born. The process is very intricate:
here in Connecticut they have tried to establish a Salmon run to
no avail. The eggs are from Nova Scotia and many of them
return there. You and I are similarly “imprinted”. We have
God’s DNA. We are created for God and are destined to return
to the heart of our Father. This should fill us with love. The
responsorial psalm says: “Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we
will sing for joy!” When we are filled with joy we want to
dance, we want to shout, we want to laugh. To see this in God’s
creation was remarkable. Standing at the Black Hole the male
salmon would leap out of the water not once but several times.
To see it is amazing. Shouldn’t this be our attitude as
Christians? We should leap with joy at what God has done and
is continuing to do for us!
When we follow God “all good things together came to me
in her company and countless riches at her hands (Wis 7:1011)” This is an echo of St Paul’s words in his letter to the
Romans: “For those that love God all things work together for
the good. “ (Rom 8) In order, however, for “all things to work
together for the good” teamwork is necessary. A group of eight
young, and middle aged men came together to catch twentyeight salmon. To catch a Salmon takes teamwork. They are so
fast and powerful you need the help of a netter to bring the fish
in. Inevitably when you get a group someone needs a little extra
help-maybe they don’t have the right equipment, perhaps their
line has snapped. The first morning my newly purchased head
lamp wasn’t working and I needed the assistance of Ben, a
fifteen year old, who went on to catch the largest fish. Without
his assistance I would not have been able to properly rig my rod
and reel in the dark. Moments later I landed a large King
Salmon with the assistance of Brian. Throughout the trip my
friend Dean, and his friend Brian, and I were watching over the
three teenagers supplying them tackle clippers and overall
encouragement. This is what families are supposed to do and
this is what parishes are supposed to do: work together as a
team. The next time you see a flock of Geese flying ahead in
formation honking remember this: they are working as a team.
The one in front is taking the bulk of the wind resistance and the
others are drafting. They then switch places and someone else
takes the lead. The honking is the encouragement. “Keep it up
Sally….Way to go Bob…..nice posture Jesse….Come on Rita
you can keep going.” When we work together as a team things
that we thought impossible can come together. When we work
together with Jesus we will begin to realize “all things are
possible for God.”
Imagine the miracles we can work together at St. Patrick if
we come together as a team. When you move a charcoal
briquette away from the pile the flame dies out. When you put it
back in the pile the flame begins to emerge once more.
Sometimes you need to step out of the ordinary to experience
this. God used a fishing trip to communicate this very important
life lesson to me. Don’t go it alone!

FAITH FORMATION
LOVE THEM BOTH
The majority of our country is now pro-life. Still 17,000
CT abortions occur yearly.
“Birth control” no longer has anything to do with either
“birth” or “control”. Closer to its new meaning is the idea
that if people have been sexually out of control, they have a
right to prevent birth (through abortion). Donald DeMarco)

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Before today’s first reading, we will pray that God’s
“grace may make us always determined to carry out good
works.” But in today’s Gospel, a would-be disciple, who
at first was determined to follow Jesus ultimately could
not leave the past behind in order to embrace the future
to which Jesus invited him. Mark says, “Jesus, looking
at him, loved him.” Jesus looks at us with love today.
Let us respond to Jesus’ love, here in our worship and in
the world, by our faithful witness.

OCTOBER HEALTH TIP
FLU SEASON 2012 - 2013
The 2012-2013 flu vaccine will protect against 3 different
flu viruses again this year; H3N2 virus, influenza B and influenza A or H1N1.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times
may lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a
flu vaccine each year.
Symptoms of the flu include: fever or feeling feverish with
chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body
aches, headache, fatigue. Flu spreads mainly by droplets made
when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets
can land in the mouth or nose of another person who is nearby
and cause them to become infected.
You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before
you even know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Most
healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day
before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming
sick.
It takes about 2 weeks after vaccination to build up the antibodies needed to provide protection against the flu.
The flu usually begins in October and can last through May.
However the timing is very unpredictable and can vary season
to season. The peak is usually January and February.
For more info visit www.cdc.gov.
MIDDLESEX HOSPICE & PALIATIVE

mentorship. Classroom training runs from early February
to mid-April, 2013, and is held on four Saturdays and one
evening. The program is always in need of male, as well
as, female volunteers. To begin our fall application process, please contact Barbara Standke, Hospice Volunteer

Question to Ponder:
What must I “go, sell, give” if I would “come, follow” Jesus in
fully committed discipleship?
THE FOOD BANK NEEDS YOU
In September alone the food bank served
160 adults and 98 children—nearly 80 families. Our shelves clear out s fast as we are filling them.
Our current needs are: canned veggies, peanut butter,
jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit, canned soup, tuna,
coffee and tea, toothpaste, bar soap and dish soap.
With Sincere Gratitude,

Parish Nurse Health Ministry
The Saint Patrick Parish Nurse Health Ministry has been
serving our parish for the last eight years. The members are Registered Nurses, EMTS, Social Workers, and other interested parishioners who volunteer their time and expertise to benefit parishioners at St. Patrick Church.
The Ministry meets only twice a year but facilitates the following: monthly blood pressure screenings, support to bereaved
families with meals, prayer shawls and bereavement materials,
Mass of Remembrance, Mass of Anointing, as well as Bulletin
health tips and health brochures and Care Notes in display cases
in the church and center.
The next meeting to plan the Mass of Remembrance will be
held on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 9:00 AM in the Parish workroom at the Parish Center. The Ministry extends a welcome to
anyone who would like to join. For more information, please
