regard. If you move or change your telephone number, please

avoid confusion, but it will also save the cost of paying

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you
belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his
reward.” (Mark 9:41)
Our Lord’s comment about the simple gesture of giving a
drink of water is a reminder of how Jesus taught that we
would all be judged at the end of time. “For I was hungry
and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed
me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.”
Matthew 25:36. Our service and sacrifice to our parish and
the greater Church allows us to care for Jesus when He is
hungry, thirsty, ill or in need.

“ The Spirit blows where it wills….”
One of the great gifts of the Second
Vatican Council to the church has
been the renewed sense of the
importance of the laity. It was a
young Cardinal by the name of Carol Wojtyla, future
Pope John Paul II, who was instrumental in the
development of the document Gaudium et Spes.
Gaudium et Spes stressed the importance of the call to
holiness of all the baptized. To further stress this point
Pope John Paul II canonized more saints than any
previous Pope. As Gaudium et Spes states: “The Church
is not motivated by an earthly ambition but is interested
in one thing only-to carry on the work of Christ under the
guidance of the Holy Spirit, for he came into the world to
bear witness to the truth, to save and not to judge, to
serve and not be served.”
In today’s first reading we see that Joshua is upset that
other people are prophesying. The words of Moses could
apply to us today: “ Would that all the people of the Lord
were prophets! Would that the Lord might bestow his
spirit on them all!” Would that today all baptized
Christians were living their call to be priest, prophet and
king. Would that today all baptized Christians were on
their way to becoming saints. The Holy Spirit has not
stopped working. He still pours His gifts on people.
Perhaps those gifts are lying dormant. Perhaps they need
to be rekindled. Remember, the gifts of the Spirit are:
Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude,
Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. St. Paul also
tells us that there are charisms-the word comes from the
Greek charismata, gifts of grace, and is used by Paul for
the extraordinary, supernatural, and transitory gifts given
directly for the common good, which is the spiritual
welfare of the Christian community. There are charisms
of Administration (Pastor, Administrator, Minister),
Charisms of Knowledge (Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher,
Exhorter, Proclaimer of Wisdom, and Proclaimer of
knowledge). There are charisms of prayer (Gifts of
communing with God), and Charisms of Service
(Almsgiving, Manifestation of mercy, Helpfulness, and
Leadership).
What are your gifts? Pray and ask the Lord. Ask a trusted
friend who may see things about yourself that you don’t
know. A friend can be a mirror of the soul-reflecting
back things that may not be immediately seen. We all
have gifts-together let us use them to build up the body
of Christ here at St. Patrick! There is no shortage of ways
in which you can serve! Peace

THANK YOU TO ST. PATRICK’S 2012
RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM
Heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful supporters of St.
Patrick Church who participated in the Relay for Life last
weekend – Bill and Debbie Lonsdale, Kim Gagliano, Maura
Eckels, Tori and Trish Palmer, Kathryn Wall, Cheryl Gioielli,
Mark and Sam Laraia, Sue Annelli and family, Helen Hill, Pat
Schworm, Gary Cioe, Pat Morrissey, and Paul Stanton and
family. We were blessed with wonderful weather and good
friends who contributed time and energy to assure a successful
event. Many more supported us with enthusiasm and
donations and for that we are extremely grateful. We are truly
committed to conquering cancer and already have ideas for
next year!
Anyone still wanting to contribute to the St. Patrick
Church Relay Team can give a check made out to the
American Cancer Society to either Dani Annino at (860) 2676644 or Jann Dalton at (860) 267-5720.
WORD OF LIFE
As a doctor the freedom to practice based not only on scientific
knowledge but also on my faith and conscience allows me and
all physicians and healthcare providers to offer the best quality
of medicine possible. As a patient, I want my doctors, nurses
and other healthcare providers to offer the same type of care.
The moment we allow our conscience to be replaced by a government “conscience,” we begin to lose our freedom.

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
On this Sunday in autumn, workers in many parts of our
country and beyond are harvesting the fields to provide
food for our tables. How appropriate, then, that in
today’s liturgy, while Jesus calls us to personal integrity,
Saint James reminds us that Jesus’ disciples must also be
committed to seeking justice for all God’s children. As
we celebrate this Eucharist, fulfilling our duty to worship
God, let us also renew our commitment to fulfill our duty
of justice toward our neighbor.

MATRIMONY
A beautiful sacrament
full of blessings, romance, love,
commitment, comedy, giving, new life, joys, sorrows, adventure, challenges, responsibilities, growth, memories and more.
Spousal love indicates a total self-giving, a total selfdonation. This is the particular value of the spousal analogy,
according to John Paul II. It emphasizes the aspect of God’s
“total” gift of himself to man. This is “a characteristic of the
mystery that is not directly emphasized….by any other analogy used in the Bible” (Theology of the Body 95b:3). To
recognize “theology” in the body is to recognize the body as
a sign of this divine self-giving love. The body itself...has a
“spousal meaning”. For it is the body that reveals (makes
visible) the call to self-giving love. It is the body that reveals
the mystery of “gift”.

HEALTH TIP SEPTEMBER 2012
Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a severe, sudden, and potentially fatal allergic reaction to a foreign substance or antigen that affects multiple systems of the body. After initial exposure to an allergen the
allergic immune system becomes sensitized to that allergen. On
a subsequent exposure to the specific allergen, an allergic reaction can occur.
Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include: constriction of the
airways, causing wheezing and difficulty in breathing; and gastrointestinal symptoms. Shock can also occur.
Substances that can trigger an anaphylactic reaction include:
- insect stings from hornets, wasps, yellow jackets, honey bees,
or fire ants
- medications, including penicillin, cephalosporin, anesthetics,
streptokinase, and others
- foods (ingesting even tiny amounts or simply being near the
offending food), including peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts or almonds), fish, shellfish, eggs, milk, soy, and wheat
vaccines, including allergy shots and egg- and gelatin-based
vaccines
- rubber latex products
The symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur within seconds of
exposure, or be delayed 15 to 30 minutes and sometimes even
an hour or more later, if the allergen is aspirin or other similar
drugs. The sooner the symptoms occur after exposure, the more
severe the anaphylactic reaction is likely to be.
Because of the severity of these reactions, treatment must begin
immediately. The most common emergency treatment involves
injection of epinephrine (adrenaline) to stop the release of histamines and relax the muscles of the respiratory tract.
Do not hesitate to call 911 if you are caring for someone with
anaphylaxis!
Question to Ponder:
What has been a specific instance in which I have
harshly judged another, only to find that I was badly
mistaken? When have I been judged harshly though
my actions were entirely innocent?
HELPING HAND SCHOLARSHIP
The Knights of Columbus and the Guild of St. Patrick will, once
again, offer four $500 scholarships to active St. Patrick Church
parishioners who are currently enrolled at a Catholic High
School. Applications will be available for pickup in the Parish
Office (or can be mailed) after October 5th.
DEFENDING OUR
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI will begin
on October 11, 2012, and continue through November 24,
2013. It is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year-long initiative, Catholics are called
to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew
their relationship with Jesus and his Church. This renewal of
our faith is the main reason why it is so vital for us to continue
fighting for our religious freedom.

mandate, please contact the White House at:
