STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to
God?” Luke 17:18
Jesus seems so sad and disappointed in the nine lepers
who did not return to thank Him. Do we regularly
return to thank God? Or do we run off to our busy
lives, taking for granted all the wonderful blessings that
God gives to us every day?

LOVE THEM BOTH
The number of abortions in the United
States has declined 25% since 1990.
Still, 1.2 million U.S. abortions occur yearly.
Barron Industries, a family owned business, in Oxford, MI,
states that they are here to serve God and one another with
honesty and integrity. In keeping with these principles they are
suing the Health and Human services mandate forcing all
companies to pay for employees abortion inducing pills,
sterilization and contraception or pay draconian fines. We, as
Catholics are called to pray and support the numerous
companies that object to this government intrusion into our
religious freedom. There are more companies fighting this
battle every day. Prayer is our powerful weapon. Pregnant?

28th Sunday in Ordinary
A very special thank you to Lillian
Plourde. On Friday we received a
letter from MaryLou Gannotti,
Director of Planned Giving with the
Diocese of Norwich. Attached to the letter was a check
in the amount of $15,451.65. The letter states “Mrs.
Plourde had set up a charitable gift annuity through the
Diocese of Norwich some years ago, naming St. Patrick
Church the beneficiary. Since Mrs. Plourde has passed,
what was left from the annuity is a gift to the parish. In
these trying financial times I am sure her generous gift
will be of great use. Her kindness and foresight is truly
appreciated.” I could not agree more. Thank you also to
the parishioners who very generously contribute on a
weekly basis to support parish ministries and functions.
This past weekend I came across some papers with
words of wisdom. One such piece was titled Healing
Relationships with Empathy. I hope you find it to be of
use. “Harville Hendrix, author of Getting the Love You
Want, and one of our most gifted relationship experts,
points out that the very first hurdle most couples have to
overcome as they embark on marriage counseling is to
let go of self-absorption. We have to become aware that
we are in relationship with another human being who has
their own thoughts, needs, desires, wounds and fears. We
have to learn to feel what they feel and to see what the
world looks like through their eyes. In other words, the
first ingredient in healing relationships is the cultivation
of empathy.
Recognizing that the other person has their own
point of view and their own experience is itself
tremendously healing. Other points of view aren’t
‘wrong’ just because they differ from ours; they may
very well be based on experiences quite different from
our own. When a couple can start to see what the world
looks like through their partner’s eyes and to feel what it
feels like in their partner’s emotional being, true healing
and true relationship can begin. The ability to empathize
with another human being-to listen and understand that
their experience of life is just as valid as ours-is an
important key to healing wounds, to dramatically
improving communication, and to developing a healthy
vibrant interaction.” Inspiring words. They also echo the
words of Pope Francis who is calling the church to a
greater sense of empathy to the wounds of mankind. You
can only bring the healing love of Christ when there is
true empathy.
Question to Ponder:
Do we see those who call out, even silently, from
greater or lesser distances, for us to see - and act?

WORD OF LIFE
“Our efforts to heal the wounds of society will depend on our
capacity to love and to be faithful to our mission. The Holy
Father is showing us very clearly that our struggle is not just
a political battle or a legal problem, but that we must evangelize and humanize the culture, then the world will be safe
for the unborn, the elderly and the unproductive. The Gospel
of Life is a Gospel of mercy. If we are going to get a hearing
in today’s world, it will be because people recognize the authenticity of our lives and our dedication to building a civilization of love. We are called to live our lives as a service to
others and commit our lives to give witness to the presence of
God’s love and mercy in our midst.” Sean Cardinal O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Boston and Chairman of the

OCTOBER HEALTH TIP
TIME TO GET YOUR FLU SHOT!
Please protect your family, friends, and co-workers and
GET YOUR FLU SHOT TODAY!!
ROSARY FOR LIFE
Please join us in praying the Rosary for
pro-life every Monday evening at 7:00pm
in the church.
The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness
caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe
illness, and at times lead to hospitalization and death.
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine
each year. Generally it takes two weeks after immunization to be protected!!
People who have the flu often feel some or all of
these symptoms: fever or feeling feverish/chills - cough
- sore throat - runny or stuffy nose - muscle or body
aches - headaches - fatigue (very tired). Some people
may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more
common in children than adults.
How flu spreads
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by
droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze
or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses
of people who are nearby.
Period of contagiousness
You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are
sick.
Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days
after becoming sick.
The timing of flu is very unpredictable and most commonly begins in the fall and peaks in the U.S. in January
or February, but can occur as late as May.

Defending Our Liberty
#85
October 13, 2013
If religious liberty is not properly understood, all people suffer and are deprived of the essential contribution to the common good, be it in education, health care, feeding the hungry,
civil rights, and social services that individuals make every
day, both here at home and overseas. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) encourages you to stay
informed and to insist upon what belongs to you by right as
Catholics and Americans.
To voice your opposition to the mandate, please call the Capitol switchboard in Washington, D.C. at 202-224-3121 and
urge your Congressmen or Congresswomen and/or U.S. Senators to support legislation that will overturn the mandate.
You can also write to the White House at: 1600 Pennsylvania
Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20500.
