We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity! GOOD EXAMPLE A faithful Christian, illumined by the rays of grace like a crystal, ought to illumine his neighbor with the light of good example, through word and deed. —St. Anthony 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time There is a wonderful line in the movie Rudy where the President of the University of Notre Dame says “In my 45 years of priesthood there are only two things I can say with absolute certainty - There is a God and I am not God.” When St. Paul in today’s second reading goes into that marvelous hymn it is almost as if he is in some sort of a deep mystical experience. He writes: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” On this side of eternity there is much that we will have to question: Why did so and so die? Why did such and such happen….and so on. The answer to this and to other questions comes down to four little words: The will of God. Our Lady, when addressed by the Archangel Gabriel, was certainly startled. However, her answer for Christians some 2,000 plus years has been the model of understanding that which we cannot comprehend - “Let it Be…” Spiritual writers such as J.P Caussade have written eloquently on surrendering to Divine Providence…..allowing our life to become one continual “Let it Be..” Mother Teresa used to call it “Total Surrender.” In her words-“Today there is no water in the well, there is no food in the pantry….be at peace…let it be….and then you are free.” It is so hard for us to live this type of life because in many ways we are masters of our own destiny. This is what our culture teaches us. “The self made man.” It is worth noting that St. Thomas Aquinas had an experience at the end of his life that left him speechless. He is known as the Angelic Doctor because of the wisdom of his teaching. Near the end of his life He had an encounter with God that profoundly affected him. He put down his pen and declared “Everything I have written is like straw compared to the glory of God.” He never wrote again. You and I hearing those words may then ask “Why bother?” We bother because God is a God of process, and it is in the process of learning about God and reading about Him that our intellect becomes purified. One day we shall see Him as He is. For now, we stumble in the dark. However, in the darkness God gives us His aid. We have the Holy Spirit who prompts our actions and gives us wisdom. We have the aid of the sacraments which nourish and feed us. We have God’s Word, Scripture which is like a “lamp unto our feet.” We have the teaching magesterium of the Church. We have so much to be grateful for, but most of all we should fall to our knees as we marvel at the beauty of creation and sing: “How Great is our God!” August 23-24, 2014 Parish Events St. Patrick Library is located in the workroom of the Parish Center. August 23-24, 2014 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Introduction-Liturgy of the Word: READINGS FOR THE WEEK In today’s Gospel we will hear Jesus ask, “Who do you say that I am?” Most of us would not be here if we had not already given thought to that question. Yet every new experience in our lives gives us another opportunity to learn more about the Lord. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve thought about it. Today, who do you say that Jesus is? Let us pray together and find out. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have looked at the evolution of how Roman Catholics initiate children into the life of the Church. How did customs evolve in the Eastern Church? At one time, Christians in both East and West preferred to celebrate baptism in a community setting, with large numbers of adults and children initiated at Easter. The two branches of Christianity began to split on the proper time to do this. In the East, water was blessed in abundance on the feast of the Epiphany, which marked, among other things, the baptism of the Lord. Once infant baptism was fixed on that day, local customs marking a birth began to evolve. One celebration was the giving of a name on the eighth day, another was the “purification” of the mother on the fortieth day after birth. In that blessing, reenacting Mary and Joseph’s journey to the temple, the priest took the baby in his arms and placed the child before the altar. Just as Simeon received the child Jesus, so the priest received the new Christian while chanting Simeon’s prayer. Later, normally on Epiphany, the priest would baptize, chrismate (confirm), and give a few drops of the Precious Blood to the child in a joyous celebration of the whole community. —Rev.
