In the Gospel this weekend Jesus is
addressing the issue of fear/worry/anxiety. It is
one of the most beautiful sayings of Our Lord:
“I tell you, do not worry about your life, what
you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not
life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at
the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather
nothing into barns, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are
you not more important than they? Can any of you by
worrying add a single moment to your life-span?” We
sometimes forget the promise of Jesus the night before he died:
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor
to be with you forever.”
In the chapter “Fear of What’s Next” Lucado tells us why
we should not fear: “God never sends you out alone. Are you
on the eve of change? Do you find yourself looking into a new
chapter? Is the foliage of your world showing signs of a new
season? Heaven’s message for you is clear: when everything
else changes, God’s presence never does. You journey in the
company of the Holy Spirit, who ‘will teach you everything
and will remind you of everything I have told you.’ (JN 14:
26). So make friends with whatever’s next. Embrace it. Accept
it. Don’t resist it. Change is not only a part of life; change is a
necessary part of God’s strategy. To use us to change the
world, he alters our assignments. Gideon: from farmer to
General; Mary: from peasant girl to the mother of Christ; Paul:
from local rabbi to world evangelist. God transitioned Joseph
from a a baby brother to an Egyptian Prince. He changed
David from a shepherd to a king. Peter wanted to fish the sea
of Galilee. God called him to lead the first church. God makes
reassignments. But, someone might ask, what about the tragic
changes God permits? Some seasons make no sense. Who can
find a place in life’s puzzle for the deformity of a child or the
enormity of an earthquake’s devastation? When a company
discontinues a position or a parent is deployed…..do such
moments serve a purpose? They do if we see them from an
eternal perspective. What makes no sense in this life will make
perfect sense in the next. I have proof: you in the womb.”
“I know you don’t remember this prenatal season, so let me
remind you what happened during it. Every gestation day
equipped you for your earthly life. Your bones solidified, your
eyes developed, the umbilical cord transported nutrients into
your growing frame….for what reason? So you might remain
enwombed? Quite the contrary. Womb time equipped you for
earth time, suited you up for your postpartum existence. Some
prenatal features went unused before birth. You grew a nose
but didn’t breathe. Eyes developed, but could you see? Your
tongue, toenails, and crop of hair served no function in your
mother’s belly. But aren’t you glad you have them now?
Certain chapters in this life seem so unnecessary, like nostrils
on the preborn. Suffering. Loneliness. Disease. Holocausts.
Martyrdom. Monsoons. If we assume this world exists just for
pregrave happiness, these atrocities disqualify it from doing so.
But what if this earth is the womb? Might these challenges,
severe as they may be, serve to prepare us, equip us for the
world to come? As St. Paul wrote, ‘These little troubles are
getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our
troubles seem like nothing.’” (2 Cor 4:17)
Sometimes all we need is a little change in perspective.

2011 World Combined Collection
The Combined Collection for World Charities is this weekend.
The causes supported by this collection are:
The Catholic Relief Services Collection—the official
international relief and development agency of the Catholic
community in the U.S. helps to fund programs that give hope
to refugees, the impoverished and immigrants, including
victims of war, natural disaster and drought.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHS)works to uphold the dignity of human life by breaking the
cycle of poverty across the united States through grants to
local community-based groups who create jobs, improve
education, and strengthen neighborhoods.
The Church in Central and Eastern Europe—raises funds
to address the spiritual reconstruction of this traumatized
region—training seminarians and lay leaders, reaching out to
young people, reviving Catholic Charities, and renewing
programs of catechesis and communication.
Holy Land Collection—the collection for the Holy Land, in
the words of Pope Paul VI is “not only for the Holy Places but
above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social
works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the
welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local
communities.”
This combined collection offers an excellent opportunity to
support hand-on efforts towards helping people in need. Your
gift does make a difference. Please be generous.
MOST REVEREND
MICHAEL R. COTE, D.D.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
It is with great joy I invite all teens of the Diocese of
Norwich to join me on Sunday, March 27th at St. Bernard’s
school in Uncasville for the Second Annual Diocese of
Norwich Youth Explosion. This will truly be a great day of
fellowship and faith as the teens of the diocese come together
to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass, hear presentations on
issues affecting you as teens by noted speaker Mike Gromley,
have the opportunity to attend Confession and participate in
Eucharistic Adoration, and conclude the day with a concert
provided by the highly regarded Ike Nkolo Band.
The theme for the year’s Youth Explosion is Love Only
Knows Two Words, You and Always. All the talks, music, and
fellowship during the day will revolve around this theme. It is
my hope that by attending the Youth Explosion, you will come
to a better understating of what true love is, a greater
realization that you are loved by God, and the knowledge that
only by following the teachings of Christ, you will be able to
share this love completely and without reservation with others.
In Hebrew 3:13 we are told to “exhort one another every
day...that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of
sin.” As teenagers you face unique challenges in a society that
attempts daily to make you turn away from God. To ward off
these temptations, you need friends and relationships with
peers who will encourage you to stay true to Christ. It is my
fervent hope that the Youth Explosion will be attended by
teens from every parish in the Diocese of Norwich. By
participating in all the activities that are planned, I have no
doubt you will connect with another teen who will be able to
“exhort” you to follow the teachings of our savior, Jesus
Christ.
We know that no ministry is possible without prayer. I
especially ask that all members of the Diocese of Norwich
support the Youth Explosion by setting aside some time on
March 27th to pray for our teens, that the Holy Spirit will be
with them especially on this day and every day, and that their
minds and hearts will be receptive to the message of Christ.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, March 27th,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Michael R. Cote
Most Reverend Bishop of Norwich

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
There is much concern these days about our nation’s economy
and even the state of the world’s financial resources. While it
is important to plan and prepare so that our loved ones are
secure, our celebration today reminds us that God is in charge,
and God will see to our needs. May our prayer today be for the
grace to trust in our loving God.

“PRAISE GOD WITH MUSIC”
Organ Replacement Update
$116,085.00 has been collected to date representing 80.75% of
all pledges. When we started last September, our goal was
to raise the money and have the organ installed by Easter
Sunday, April 24th. The pledge campaign was a great success
and the collections have been going very well. The project has
been going so well that the expected delivery date of the organ,
March 17th, is a month earlier than originally anticipated.
Many of you have chosen to pay the balance of your pledge
ahead of time. Your timely payments are greatly appreciated to
ensure that we can cover the balance due on the organ.
