What is it about? Our First Parish congregation was introduced to the Centro Arte Para La Paz (The Art Center for Peace) in Suchitoto, EI Salvador during 2008-09 as a group of fifteen youth and chaperones prepared for their April 2009 service trip. The Center, run by the dynamic Sister Peggy O'Neal, provides education to this war torn country's inhabitants on ways to move ahead in a life of peace. The First Parish group supports the Center through various youth-led events. CAPs Main areas of focus? 1. The School: Peace through the Arts - This is an alternative educational program that offers a variety of workshops and courses (in areas of art, gender equality and the prevention of violence) that are provided free of charge to children and youth who live under the poverty level in the municipality of Suchitoto. Some of the specific offerings are: classes in harp, batacuda , guitar and song , yoga, audiovisual production , digital photography; courses on conflict mediation , alternative programs to violence, computers and English. 2. The Restoration of the buildings respecting the Cultural heritage of Suchitoto: On the property are colonial structures: the Chapel and the School , which are listed on the directory of the ministry of Culture, the Historical Society, of EI Salvador. A multiphase/multi year plan is seeking to restore the Hostel , Peace gardens , Playgrounds for Peace, classrooms and a Community Museum. 3. Self Sustainability - To ensure the sustainability of the organization and the programs , various income generating initiatives have been adopted mainly through space rental , such as the Hostel, providing accomodations for delegations and groups (such as FP), two conference centers and areas for break out groups. There iare plans for an outdoor cafe, a small hop to sell local handcrafts and OVO's produced for the Museum . Cap will also have a tour boat which will operate on Lake Suchitlan and the youth who have worked in the museum are the tour guides. All of these efforts are in place to sustain and ensure CAP's services to the people of Suchitoto. CAPs Impact to the Community? The First Parish EI Salvador groups that have visited CAP and the communities of Suchitoto and EI Sitio have witnessed first hand the very real impact that CAP's multitude of programs have had to hundreds if not thousands of people, not only to inhabitants of EI Sitio and Suchitoto but, to hundreds of students from over 75 universities, high schools students like our own First Parish youth, and adults from allover the world that have come to CAP to witness and listen to the stories of a people ravaged and traumatized by a long civil war. Placing a number on the on the number of people positively affected by CAPs programs can be guessed at by looking at our own Face Book page for our SAC program group that currently has 65 members following our activities . We are but one of 100 other, big and small institutions (75+ universities) with similar populations of young and old having been touched by CAP. Suffolk University and it's Moakley Center, hosting annual student group visits to EI Salvador, are also touched by CAP's reach . Our group has listened to compelling stories of young people from the impoverished community of EI Sitio now attending university through scholarships established and funded by people deeply touched by CAPs programs . I'm including a recent example of CAPs successes as described by Sister Peggy ... " Here is a project we are so enthused about. It is in line with our goals of prevention of violence and maintaining youth who are not able to get to Universities or some who have not completed high school yet to start thinking of developing a skill and get them to the next step of commercialization of their products . We have had success with IMAGINARTE, a group of 5 from the museum project. We got them a loan of $1,000 from Mary's Pence and they have launched their own business. They design banners, posters, and photos for post cards along with videos . They are presently working on 4 films for Rotary International about 4 water projects completed by Rotary here in Suchitoto. ( a $5,000 project for them) .. .. the trick is they use all of our computers, digital art software, and editing machines. We need to help art help them! as well as heal them!
