Arbel, the pilgrims cross over the valley leading in the direction of Kibbutz Ginosar, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where they can rest on the kibbutz lawns before setting out on the last leg of their adventure, to Tabgha and Capernaum. Enjoyed at a comfortable pace and with lots of rest stops, this route, passing through the lovely Galilee landscape with its hills and valleys, olive trees, sunrises and sunsets, takes four days to complete and is not difficult. Tabgha, site of the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, is the starting off point for the trail heading back. The climb down Mt. Arbel, further along the way, is somewhat scary, and it is navigated by means of all types of hand bars and other aids that help the hikers keep their footing. Marking the trail days to complete. It includes Tiberias, the Jordan River estuary, where it meets the Sea of Galilee, and Mt. Tabor. The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes The New Testament reports at length on the great miracle that was performed at Tabgha, where the stone upon which Jesus is said to have placed the bread can be seen. As related in the New Testament: As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. They dream of millions of pilgrims following these Galilee paths, walking sticks in hand and wearing broad-brimmed hats to shade them from the sun. It’s only natural, they say, that the hikers would stop off along the route to eat something and to sleep in inexpensive but comfortable hostels. That’s why they’re also dreaming of developing tourism in the Galilee - and they’re men of their words. Two new hostels have opened already. One is in Cana (known today as Kafr Kana) and the other in Ilaniya. And this is only for starters! By Rona Gal Mount Arbel lookout point A number of Christian pilgrimage trails can be found in various places around the world, some of them stretching along hundreds or thousands of kilometers and welcoming believers that get special passports stamped at each station along the way, bed down in modest hostels, and measure their way to the next holy site with their feet. That’s the way it has been for more than 1000 years along the “Way of St. James,” which leads to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, where the tomb of the saint, one of Jesus’ disciples, is located. I spent some time there quite a number of years ago, and took the opportunity to walk along the road with pilgrims from southern France, the sort of people that walk a few dozen kilometers each year until, eventually, they reach the church in Santiago de Compostela where James is said to have been buried. Two Friends Walking Together Creating a similar path in Israel for Christian pilgrims was an idea waiting to happen, so obvious, since Jesus and His 12 Disciples walked this land; and churches, from as early as Byzantine times, were built just about everywhere the New Testament says Jesus walked. All it took was to connect the diverse religious sites and invite believers to walk the road between Nazareth and Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. The initiative to integrate all the sites into a sensible continuous path, and to mark it, was taken by two friends, Maoz Inon, an Israeli who owns a guesthouse in Nazareth, and David Landis, an American who had studied in Israel for a few months as part of his U.S. college curriculum, before touring the country along the “Israel Trail.” That’s when Maoz and David met, and they clicked. Working together, the Jesus Trail came to be. A unique group of early sculpturepaintings by Alexander Archipenko is on permanent display, as is a huge mural specially created as a gift for the museum by American artist Roy Lichtenstein. The Palmach Museum The Palmach Museum is an interactive facility that documents the history of Israel’s primary pre-Independence paramilitary units. A newer permanent exhibition focuses on foreign volunteers during that period. The new Design Museum Holon, planned by architect and über-designer Ron Arad, stands on a 3700m² site, and it is a display of design in its own right. The exterior is made of sinuous bands of varying shades of COR-TEN (weathered steel), wrapping the building in waves that curve all around. The bands encompass the building in certain places, while elsewhere they serve to characterize it. Exposed to the elements, they change hues, and this means that the shades of the façade will change as time passes. The museum’s 5000 m² large hall is illuminated mostly by natural light from outside, with elements of shade set into the ceiling to filter out the rays of the sun. Artificial light illuminates the second hall, about half the size of the first, creating a more intimate feeling. A third space has been set aside as a laboratory for contemporary design. They become active characters in the story lines, and are even encouraged to touch and feel the exhibits, which have been designed for different age groups. The Israeli Museum of Caricature and Comics The Israeli Museum of Caricature and Comics features three permanent exhibits and two temporary exhibits from the world of caricature, comics, and visual humor. The permanent exhibits are: “Hebrew Journal Caricaturists” (the work of six pioneers in the field since before the establishment of the State of Israel); “Orientation Space, How Much, Why, Where and How” (caricatures, comics and animation from the times of the Pharaohs and ancient Greece until today), and “Israeli Comic Strips” (contemporary works by a wide range of artists). It explores the development of the State of Israel as a young democracy, paralleling developments in the life of the former Israel Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in Tel Aviv, in 1995, with those of the British Mandate Land of Israel and the State of Israel that followed it, against a background of significant events that occurred all over the world during those years. Israel Children’s Museum Bloomfield Science Museum The Bloomfield Science Museum is a new and modern museum with innovative and sophisticated exhibits that illustrate different scientific areas. Recommended for children and youth; also enjoyable for adults. Yad Vashem Yad Vashem Yad Vashem, a memorial to the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust, comprises the Hall of Remembrance, the Valley of Communities, a museum, documentation center and library. This poignant center dedicated to the memory of the victims of mindless anti-Semitic barbarism, gives the visitor important insights into the psyche of the State of Israel and the circumstances which led to its creation. Yad Vashem features the largest and the most comprehensive archive and information repositories on the Holocaust, housing more than 50 million pages of documents and hundreds of thousands of photographs and films. Its more than 75,000 titles and periodicals comprise the most significant library on Holocaust research in the world. L.A. Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art The L.A. Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art, named in memory of Prof. L .A. Mayer, an Islamic art and archeology scholar, houses a collection of Jewish miniatures, arts, tools, and weapons from Islamic lands. The museum spotlights a culture that developed over a period of one thousand years and which spanned several continents. These include ritual objects used in the synagogue, personal articles for the observance of the various holidays, household goods and documents. The museum's main attraction is the 18th century synagogue from Conegliano Veneto, located 60 kilometers from Venice. Now located in the center of Jerusalem, it is considered to be the spiritual center for Jews of Italian origin. Prayers are conducted according to the Roman or Italian rite, which is closely related to that which prevailed during the Second Temple period. Bible Lands Museum The Bible Lands Museum displays many archeological finds depicting life in the Holy Land throughout different periods. Tel Aviv The Nahum Goldman Museum of the Jewish Diaspora (Beth Hatefutsoth) Beth Hatefutsoth, the Nahum Goldman Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, tells the story of the Jewish people from the time of their expulsion from the Land of Israel about 2500 years ago to the present. History and tradition Jewish heritage in all parts of the world are brought to life in murals, reconstructions, dioramas, audiovisual displays, documentary films and interactive multi-media presentations. In the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center, visitors can search a computerized database containing genealogies of Jewish families from all over the world, and they can register their own family trees. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is a major fine arts museum. An international meeting place for all the arts - painting, sculpture photography, design, architecture, music, and cinema - it houses the best of Israeli art, classical paintings, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, 20th-century Modern Masters and over 20,000 prints and drawings. The spacious galleries show works by many of the finest 20th-century artists, including Picasso, Pollock, Rothko, Simply stated, Israel is a museum-lover’s dream. Situated in a land where the roots of civilization go back even further, it is a country with a history going back more than 3000 years, reclaimed by people dispersed these past two millennia throughout just about every country and region on the face of this earth, and with each Jewish community taking from its host country aspects of culture and traditions and making them part of their own. Israel is a blend of ancient and modern, Western and Eastern, religious and secular cultures, every one of them possessing its own burning desire to document all the aspects of its checkered past.
