Jewish Education Center of Cleveland – Four Questions
Ideas for teaching vocabulary from the Four Questions
beyond what we see in Marcia’s video
(see: http://www.hebrewthroughmovement.org/pesah.html)
Reminder: Teach 3ish new vocabulary words at a time.
What you’ll find below will probably stretch over a few lessons.
SUPPLIES NEEDED (not all will be needed for one lesson):
 An enlarged copy of the Four Questions to post in the room
 Apples, donuts – cut up
 Matzah
 Hametz (bread, rolls, box of cereal, box of pasta, etc.)
 A variety of fresh vegetables (e.g., carrot, potato, broccoli, etc)
 Horseradish root
 Jar of horseradish
 A variety of foods the illustrate what we eat on other holidays
 Photos of night-time scenes
Transition into Pesah – Show photos of other Jewish holidays, labeling them as you go (e.g., Hanukkah,
Tu Bishvat, Purim) and then show a picture of Pesah and label it, too (e.g., “Pesah”). Show the props
that you have brought and say “Pesah,” again. Then move into the warm-up.
Warm Up – Use a variety of commands to open the session, e.g., action verbs and some things that hint
at the vocabulary of the holiday. There are a number of ways to reinforce the foods from previous
holidays – one is via pictures, but another is by having actual food (cut into bite-size pieces) for students
to point to, touch and lift up … and eat! [You want to be able to review: ‫ ] לאכול‬Place these foods on a
table before class begins
‫לקום‬
‫לשבת‬
‫לקום‬
‫להסתובב‬
‫להסתובב אל הלוח‬
‫לקפוץ אל ההשלחן‬
‫לגעת בתפוח‬

‫<< אנו אוכלין מצה‬also say
Do a few more commands that reinforce ‫ חמץ‬and ‫מצה‬
Command a student to come to stand by the Hebrew Four Questions and point to the words ‫ חמץ‬and
‫מצה‬. Also to ‫אנו אוכלין‬.
Together recite the matching line of the Four Questions starting with ‫שבכל הלילות‬. Use the food on the
table to reinforce the Hebrew words when students recite them.
Introduce ‫ירקות‬, ‫ שאר ירקות‬and ‫מרור‬.
Have a wide variety of vegetables on the table.
Point to one and say ‫ירק‬
Repeat this with other vegetables, one at a time.
Indicate all the vegetables and say ‫ ירקות‬.

Jewish Education Center of Cleveland – Four Questions
You could do some commands with students interacting with the ‫ ירקות‬. Like
‫בנים – לקפוץ אל השולחן‬
‫בנות – לרוץ אל השולחן‬
Take out the horseradish root and say: ‫ מרור‬You might pass it around the class so children can smell it.
Using your facial expression, indicate that it’s bitter.
Show jar of horseradish and say ‫מרור‬
Show the horseradish root and say ‫מרור‬. Indicate that these two are the same.
Put the horseradish root back among the vegetables and say, ‫ ירקות‬.
THEN, take the ‫ מרור‬out from among the vegetables and say, ‫שאר ורקות‬.
Command a student to come to stand by the Hebrew Four Questions and point to the words ‫שאר ורקות‬
and ‫מרור‬.
Together recite the matching line of the Four Questions starting with ‫שבכל הלילות‬. [You might skip
ahead to this line.] Use the food on the table to reinforce the Hebrew words when students recite
them.
Introduce ‫ אנו אוכלין‬and ‫אין אנו אוכלין‬
You can reinforce ‫ אנו אוכלין‬by asking questions like:
?‫בפסח – אנו אוכלין אוזני המן‬
?‫בפסח – אנו אוכלין מצה‬
?‫בפורים – אנו אוכלין סופגניות‬
?‫בפסח – אנו אוכלין חמץ‬
?‫בחנוכה – אנו אוכלין חלה‬
?‫בראש השנה – אנו אוכלין לולב‬
And you can answer at times: _____ ‫אין אנו אוכלין‬
3
Jewish Education Center of Cleveland – Four Questions
Introduce ‫לילה לילות‬

‫לילה‬
Hold two of the photos and say ‫לילות‬
