‫ב"ה‬ Classic Arguments of the Talmud Hillel and Shammai By Rabbi Yehuda Leib Schapiro Lesson One ‫ ב‬,‫מסכת שבת כא‬ Talmud Tractate Shabbat 21b ‫ת"ר מצות חנוכה נר איש וביתו והמהדרין נר לכל אחד ואחד והמהדרין מן המהדרין ב"ש אומרים יום ראשון מדליק‬ ‫שמנה מכאן ואילך פוחת והולך וב"ה אומרים יום ראשון מדליק אחת מכאן ואילך מוסיף והולך אמר עולא פליגי בה‬ ‫תרי אמוראי במערבא ר' יוסי בר אבין ור' יוסי בר זבידא חד אמר טעמא דב"ש כנגד ימים הנכנסין וטעמא דב"ה כנגד‬ ‫ימים היוצאין וחד אמר טעמא דב"ש כנגד פרי החג וטעמא דבית הלל דמעלין בקדש ואין מורידין‬ Our Rabbis taught: The precept of Hanukkah [demands] one light for a man and his household; the zealous [kindle] a light for each member [of the household]; and the extremely zealous, — Beit Shammai maintain: On the first day eight lights are lit and thereafter they are gradually reduced; but Beit Hillel say: On the first day one is lit and thereafter they are progressively increased. 'Ulla said: In the West [Palestine] two amoraim, R. Yose b. Abin and R. Yose b. Zebida, differ therein: one maintains, The reason of Beit Shammai is that it shall correspond to the days still to come, and that of Beit Hillel is that it shall correspond to the days that are gone; but another maintains: Beit Shammai's reason is that it shall correspond to the bullocks of the Festival; whilst Beit Hillel's reason is that we promote in [matters of] sanctity but do not reduce. ‫ א‬,‫מסכת ראש השנה ב‬ Talmud Tractate Rosh Hashanah 2a ‫ באחד בשבט ראש השנה לאילן כדברי בית שמאי בית הלל אומרים בחמשה עשר‬... ‫משנה ארבעה ראשי שנים הם‬ :‫בו‬ Mishnah. There are four new years…On the first of Shevat is the new year for trees according to the ruling of Beit Shammai; [However] Beit Hillel maintain it’s on the fifteenth of that month. ‫ א‬,‫מסכת ראש השנה טז‬ Talmud Tractate Rosh Hashanah 16a :‫… ובחג נידונין על המים‬.‫משנה בארבעה פרקים העולם נדון‬ Mishnah.
