FACE TO FACE:
CO-CREATING INTIMACY AND COMMUNITY
My heart says to You, “Seek my face”;
Your face, Divine, I will seek.
(Psalm 27)
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
As water’s face reflects the face, so does one human heart reflect another.
- Proverbs 27:17-19
‫ אחד מחדד את‬,‫מה ברזל זה‬
‫ אף שני תלמידי חכמים‬- ‫חבירו‬
...‫מחדדין זה את זה בהלכה‬
Just as the case of iron, when one implement sharpens another, so too do two Torah
scholars sharpen each other when they debate questions of law together.

And the Cherubim shall stretch out their wings on high, covering the cover with their wings, and their
faces shall look one to another; toward the cover shall the faces of the Cherubim be.
And you shall put the cover upon the ark; and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you.
And there I will meet with you, and I will talk with you from above the cover, from between the two
Cherubim which are upon the ark of the Testimony, of all things which I will give you in commandment
to the people of Israel.

How did they stand? Rabbi Johanan and Rabbi Eleazar are in dispute on the matter.
One Says: ey faced each other; and the other says: eir faces were inward. But according
to him who says that they faced each other, it may be asked: Is it not written, And their faces
were inward?
- Chron.II 3:13
is is no difficulty: e former was at a time when Israel obeyed the will of the
Omnipresent; the latter was at a time when Israel did not obey the will of the Omnipresent.
According to him who says that their faces were inward it may be asked: Is it not written,
With their faces one to another?
- Exodus 25:20
ey were slightly turned sideways. For it was taught: Onkelos the proselyte said, e
Cherubim were of image work and their faces were turned sideways as a student who takes
leave of his master.
- Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Baba Bathra 99
In the access to the face there is certainly also an access to the idea of God.... To my
mind the Infinite comes in the significance of the face. e face signifies the
Infinite.... When in the presence of the Other, I say, “Here I am!”, this “Here I am!”
is the place through which the Infinite enters into language... e subject who says
“Here I am!” testifies to the Infinite. e face speaks. It speaks, it is in this that it
renders possible and begins all discourse.... e first word of the face is the “ou
shalt not kill.” It is an order. ere is a commandment in the appearance of the face,
as if a master spoke to me.- Emanuel Levinas
God rests in the embrace of two bodies. ere, too, the Shekina reveals Herself.
And lest we think that holiness can reside only in the union of a man and a woman,
we should note that although some midrashim imagine one cherub as male and one
as female, most Midrashim do not...e embrace of the cherubim is less about
gender that it is about intimacy and love. At the core of holiness is the wisdom of
love.
- Rabbi Jill Hammer
Our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. God did
not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with
us, who are all of us here alive this day. God spoke
with you face to face on the mount out of the midst
of the fire.
- Deuteronomy 5:2-5
How is it possible to have a covenant without an Other? If God is
not distinct from self and community why use a theological
language of partnership at all?
Otherness is the mother of human language: because of the other,
we are moved to speak. Others teach us and are taught by us. Others
work and build the world with us. Others heal our loneliness. Others
befriend us. Female or male, straight or gay, we seek the body of the
the other to cohabit, to be interpenetrated.
Because God is Other, God created a world filled with difference.
Because God is Partner all difference is filled with holy possibility.
Only if there is an Other can there be mirroring and reciprocity.
- Rachel Adler

PEACE
Come, come, whoever you are.
Wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving.
It doesn’t matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vow a
thousand times.
Come, yet again, come, come.

1 And the word of God came to
Jonah the second time
.‫שנִית לֵאמֹר‬

commanded. Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,
three days' journey away.

God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put
on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least
of them.

Song for the
Divine Mother of the Universe
(Ben Lee)
Sweet Mother I’m coming home
Now I know I’m not alone
‘Cause I’ve been far
But now I’m close
Sweet Mother I’m comin’ home
Tell me Mother can you hear me sing?
Your love is everything
Heart and soul,
Breath and skin
Your love is everything
Oh, mother please hold me tight
‘Cause Mother I need some help tonight
And what went wrong,
Will soon be right,
Oh, Mother please hold me tight
Oh, Mother this world is strange,
Love me Mother and make me brave,
In my dreams,
Or on this stage,
Oh, Mother this world is strange

We've loved,
We've built,
We've raised,
We've worried,
We've tried, and we've succeeded somewhat.
We've deceived sometimes.
We've sinned, we've erred, we've gotten out of it somehow.
We've hurt, we've learned, we've stumbled, we've tried.
We've forgiven ourselves and others a little too much.
We've done something nonetheless.
We've made money.
We've been right at times few and far between.
We've gotten a lot,
We've wanted much too much.
We've been less happy than was possible or necessary.
